  1. oh you're right, our worst reliever came into a tight game and immediately gave up two BBs, I beg for Dale's forgiveness. And then? a ball was hit hard that luckily went right to a fielder. You honestly think this was the best spot to let marmol work through his [expletive]? The (lucky) result doesn't justify the bad decision. Would you rather we waited for the first 6 run lead or deficit we run into? Letting Marmol sit in the pen not pitching isn't going to accomplish anything. Yeah, with as good as the starting pitching is and as mediocre as the offense is, there's not going to be a ton of garbage time to reserve Marmol for.
  2. Don Sutton on the Braves telecast tonight was talking about the incident and said he had never heard of hitting a rookie/phenom/hyped prospect simply because they were a rookie/phenom/hyped prospect before. He basically called Hamels out for just being an ass.
  3. he's very happy to be there He looks like a waterlogged corpse. There something disconcerting about the way he looks. He's kind of creepy.
  4. Shark looking pretty good. Also, listening to Chip makes me appreciate Len & Bob even more.
  5. Yet again, I started to turn the game on MLB.tv only to remember I can't get it at work because I'm on the Illinois side of the river. got to love archaic blackout rules For sure. If you pay a premium to MLB for access, you should be able to watch any broadcast.
  6. Eh, I'm dealing with it. Besides, it's nostalgic (barf).
  7. Spring training results determined status, why shouldn't regular season major league starts? Well, Volstad's peripherals aren't bad, while Wood has been pretty bad in Iowa. At the very least, I'd like to see Wood get a few more starts in Iowa to prove his start in Chicago wasn't an outlier. Giving the nature of pacific coast league baseball, I think seeing what he does in Chicago and other major league ballparks may be more useful in determining his ability. One decent start and mediocre milb numbers (regardless of league) shouldn't be enough to get Wood into Volstad's spot. Yet.

  9. I don't see Volstad getting pulled from the rotation anytime real soon. Other than a handful of poor innings Volstad has looked pretty good, so it's not like there is no reason not to hope he'll get it together. And Wood wasn't exactly mowing them down in Iowa, either.
  10. Yeah, we can't have guys throwing 195 innings. We need 200 IP guys.
  11. My thought was "Damn, Pena would have picked that easily". Probably true, but there was no reason for Castro to get cute there. He had all kinds of time.
  12. Yea. It's definitely an "issue" now, whether or not it was already. The kicker for me is that the Angels are already 7.5 games back of the Rangers. It's not like the Angels are tearing up the league and can afford to wait around for Pujols to figure things out. Games in April and May count, too. It's may. He's also following up his worst season with a an absolutely abysmal start. He got off to a slow start last year, but it was nothing compared to the putrid display he's put on so far in 2012. But it's not the numbers that are the most troubling, it's that his approach at the plate has degraded. Walks down, K/BB rate climbing sharply, chasing pitches and expanding his strike zone. He did it last year as well. If he were being babip'd that'd be one thing, but he's not the same player at the plate right now. His plate discipline is a huge part of what made him a HoF player and unless he rediscovers it, the days of 1.000 OPS, 7+ WAR Pujols are done. Hell, if he doesn't rediscover his old self, the days of .900 OPS, 5 WAR Pujols are over. Unless he absolutely explodes out of this, 2012 looks to be his third consecutive year of clear decline.
  13. Curious, what would qualify as a doom and gloom person right now? Watching wood walk the leadoff hitter and give up 2 runs in the 8th is going to bring out a few negative thoughts in anybody. calling wood "done" after 3 innings is a little much for me. maybe "doom and gloom" is the wrong phrase, but whatever. His career has been in decline for at least a year now. Saying a guy's career has been in decline for a year just sounds funny on its face. Plus the numbers don't agree with you.
  14. Or injuries, or trades. Both Garza and Dempster would have to go for 100 losses to be a possibility, imo.
  15. They have? I only based it on ERA to date. I didn't realize they were bottom half of the league there, but I probably should have looked at more telling stats since I assumed they were better than that. Either way, the team is playing about as expected, can't hit, decent starting, crap bullpen. That's what was expected. So there's no reason to pretend they should be 15-10 or something. That's true, though I think the offense will get better (not good, just better) as the season progresses. The schedule in the second half looks to be much more forgiving as well. If the team could have hovered around .500 until the ASB, I think it could have had an outside shot. But the bullpen is a disaster. When Cashner/Marshall were traded is when I knew 2012 was going to be a rebuilding year for sure. But really, I'm okay with that. Marmol trashing any trade value (or chances of being moved at all) he might have irks me more than the losses at this point.
  16. Because he wasn't good last year? I'm not one of those down on Theo/Jed, but I thought Marmol was entering a downward spiral last year, but that his 2011 wasn't so bad he would be immovable over the offseason. He is now. Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure I thought he was immovable. For a decent return, yeah. I thought he could be moved for serviceable parts if a reasonable chunk of his contract were picked up. Now he's not going anywhere.
