  1. I had my life's fill of Hardee's when I worked there as a teen.
  2. I was at the store yesterday and a guy in comes up to me, points to my Cubs hat and asks me if I'm a big fan. I say yes, and he says he's a huge fan, but asks me what the team's record is. I tell him and he repeats it back to me with a frown. So I say "but it's a rebuilding year, so we can deal with it for now, right? We can trust Theo for the time being." So he's like "Who?", and I'm not sure what to say. Then he says, "well I don't know about that, but I'm pretty pissed off Sandberg wasn't hired as the manager...you could have given him just about any players and he'd win with them. Ryno is the man." The guy was wearing a Bears cap so I tried to change the subject to the draft, but he said "Oh, I love the Bears but I don't know half as much about them as I do the Cubs", to which I replied "So effectively nothing, then?" He didn't seem too interested in carrying on after that. It's disappointing because there aren't many sports fans here to talk to (most are strictly Broncos fans), and the few Chicago sports fans I run into don't know [expletive] about [expletive].
  3. I'm pretty sure you just described most Americans and whatever team/interest they have.
  4. I'm half asleep or I probably would have made that connection as well.
  5. I have to deal with too many of these people. Marijuana has some limited medial benefits, but of course has its share of negative health effects. It certainly isn't a harmless wonder drug that has been totally demonized. Having said that, it should be legalized, regulated and taxed. If alcohol is legal, there's absolutely no reason weed shouldn't be. Of course I think the entire "war on drugs" is a massive, egregious waste of resources and profoundly negative social force, but criminalizing pot is particularly dumb. And for the record I haven't smoked up in years and wouldn't even if it were legal.
  6. Reports are indicating that he shot himself in the chest. I'm pretty sure he meant a brain trauma leading to the suicide/depression/etc angle. I realize that; Dave Duerson did the same thing so that his brain could be preserved for study. We'll have to see how this plays out. Ah. Very well could be, though there are other reasons one would opt for a non-headshot.

  8. What you've just described is my idea of a manager doing a good job.
  9. Why not? Soto is not good and he's not getting better. He's 29 years old and is not part of our future. What's wrong with seeing what Castillo can do? Soto is not as bad as he has been so far this year, plus he plays a position where there are potential trade partners in waiting. Even if you have decided he isn't part of the future, you let him normalize so you can get more in trade return, you don't bench him, especially in a lost year. There is literally no reason whatsoever to bench him this early, or anytime soon. To do so would be moronic. He's a career .800 OPS player coming off a strong spring. You don't toss him in the bin three weeks into a season when he's OPSing under .500. If it's midseason and he's still sporting a .464 OPS, revisit this. But he won't be.
  10. I love the Jeffery pick. Going from zero big, matchup problem receivers to two? Cutler is going to be like a pig in [expletive]. Conversely, it appears thus far that Emery & Co. meant it when they said they're not concerned with the O-line, which seriously concerns me.
  11. You're perhaps the most negative poster on this board. I'd venture to say that 95% of Bears fans are up in arms over this draft pick for various reasons. I'm an easily disturbed, jaded Chicago sports fan, big deal. 95%? It seems pretty mixed around here. I'm not ecstatic, but it's the first pick by our new GM. He's already acquired Marshall who we've wanted for years and has 6 more picks to make. It wasn't a thrilling pick by any stretch, but it's hardly a head-scratching, WTF-level reach of a pick (a la Hayden Simpson).
  12. You're perhaps the most negative poster on this board. I'd venture to say that 95% of Bears fans are up in arms over this draft pick for various reasons. I'm an easily disturbed, jaded Chicago sports fan, big deal. I'll take the under on that.
  13. There mere fact McKlellin was in the building shows this wasn't as bad as Hayden Simpson.
  14. Right. No one was expecting vintage Pujols, and the "other" factors he brings were no doubt figured into his contract. Conversely, no one is expecting Pujols to fall off of a cliff, and I still don't. But if Albert only gives them 2-3 years of 5+ WAR production and then declines into a 2-3 WAR player for the rest of his contract, you have to consider the deal a mistake. And no matter how one spins it, the fact that he is becoming (much) less selective while he is aging is not an encouraging sign.
  15. 1. Des Moines and IC are very different places 2. As much as I despise Iowa athletics, Iowa City is not a bad place. I'd take it over most of the other B1G towns, including UC, easily (granted I haven't been to UC in a long time).
  16. Yeah, his approach at the plate has gone in the crapper. You used to never see Albert expand his zone, now he does it with regularity. There is the possibility that he is pressing so far this season because of the contract, but that still doesn't explain last season. His approach is a huge part of what has made Pujols great and if what we have seen from him since the beginning of last year is indicative of what he has become, the Angels are going to wear that contract. This isn't bad luck, he's simply not the same player at the plate right now.
  17. Same sort, but sulley's might actually be funny.
  18. Definitely got a couple breaks tonight, but you have to take 'em where you can get 'em.
  19. Considering the level of automation technology and the quantity of baseballs produced, it's pretty amazing it is still done that way.
  20. Rizzo with another RBI single, where are the homers already? Jeez.
  21. You also have to consider there might not be a buyer for Byrd later on. You can't always deal a guy away when it's convenient for you, especially when there wasn't much of a market for them to begin with.
  22. The Sawx bullpen is absolutely throwing BP out there and Valentine is really hearing it from the crowd. It looks like the drama last year may just have been a taste of things to come. I feel bad for Ben Cherington.
  23. Historically, I've never rooted for the Yankees in this rivalry, but I really want Lucchino to wear this mess.
