I have to deal with too many of these people. Marijuana has some limited medial benefits, but of course has its share of negative health effects. It certainly isn't a harmless wonder drug that has been totally demonized. Having said that, it should be legalized, regulated and taxed. If alcohol is legal, there's absolutely no reason weed shouldn't be. Of course I think the entire "war on drugs" is a massive, egregious waste of resources and profoundly negative social force, but criminalizing pot is particularly dumb. And for the record I haven't smoked up in years and wouldn't even if it were legal. See I don't get that argument. All because one drug is legal, lets make another one legal. Why give more options to get wasted? Because people will do it (prolifically) regardless of legality. That's what some people don't want to reconcile with. All making it illegal does is create a criminal culture around it, spawning violence and filling up prisons with many people who don't need to be there (users, growers). It's easy to produce, so it's hard to regulate. Being that trying to stamp it out is a total waste of time, money and lives, why not legalize and tax it, turning it from a monetary sinkhole into a source of revenue? Doing so would also all but kill off crime related to its production, trafficking and sale, freeing up prison space for people who should actually be there. As a substance, it's equal to or less (almost certainly the former) of a disruptive social force than booze. Legalizing it makes so much sense it's not even funny. Which is why it is just a matter of time.
