  1. Yeah, he's on fire. OPS at .899, by my back of the envelope math.
  2. As with most things, the truth lies in the middle here. The farm system wasn't barren, but it certainly wasn't good by any stretch. The MLB roster had a couple long term assets, but that's about it. Neither the "Theo and Jed inherited nothing" or "They had enough to turn things around quickly" arguments hold much water, imo.
  3. If Manny is a benefit to Bryant/Baez at all, I'd prefer he stay where he is. And at his age, I don't think bringing him up would do anything for the team but sell a few more tickets. Having said that, once Iowa's season is over and the rosters are expanded, I don't see the harm in bringing him up, if he's amenable to it. It's not as if he'd be taking ABs away from anyone who needs them.
  4. I don't want to go too off topic, but I don't trust James Shields at all. Yeah, don't want Shields at all. And he'll likely get paid a ton based on reputation. Don't trust him? Reputation? What? ... It's not reputation, so much as it is paying for past performance, as Theo might say. Shields has been good, and someone is going to pay him like he's going to continue being that good, even though he's going to be 33. And they're almost certainly going to regret it, probably as early as the second or third year. Giving FA contracts to good pitchers on the wrong side of 30 is a freaking trap (insert Admiral Ackbar meme here) that too many GMs fall into.
  5. I can't find a clip or gif right now, but I was always partial to Fukudome's bat flip. I think it was one of the best. Too bad he didn't get to use it more.
  6. he's MLB-ready today, which should put a huge premium on his prospect status, but that never seems to be valued highly enough i think too often people make the assumption players will just continue their production all the way up the ladder and repeat their successes, but you get pitchers washing out with injuries, players like Maikel Franco or Raul Mondesi falling on their faces even to the point about ceiling, isn't his ceiling in the neighborhood of Reyes / Rollins offensive output? or maybe more realistically still, a Ray Durham type of career? i guess i still value something like that more than some others would who get so caught up in HRs or a singular skill He'd have to bring his walk rate up a tad, but I'd be pretty thrilled if Alcantara ended up being Ray Durham. It seems like a pretty apt comp, too.
  7. I love the Boise lineup, there's like three catchers in it.
  8. The simple answer may be that they feel like there's more hope (however little that may be) left for Vitters than Jackson. I would probably agree.
  9. I'd much rather let Olt tread water in hopes of figuring it out then call up Donnie Murphy Jr. It's not doing anyone any good keeping Olt on the big club at this point, especially since he's not getting consistent PAs. He's almost certainly doomed, but if there's even a glimmer of hope, he needs to get PAs. His confidence has to be in tatters, so there's not really any harm in sending him down. It may have to wait until the deadline, but I say jettison Barney, send Olt to Iowa and let him play 1B, make Valbuena the full time 3B (which he already is for all intents and purposes) and call up Alcantara and give him 2B.
  10. Apparently it was a monster shot that hit a light tower in RF. Here's the video, but it's nearly worthless due to bad camera work. All you see is the RF not even bothering to to turn around until after the ball hits the tower. The Colorado Springs announcers seemed duly impressed, though.
  11. I don't care for Molina at all, but Gomez blows him away on the insufferable douchebag scale, as far as I'm concerned. And that's 100% aside from the fact that I wish he were on the Cubs.
  12. Pretty much all of their good or promising offensive players have taken massive steps back in the last year. It's pretty amazing, really.
  13. And it had to be a barely in the basket job to the alley, because of [expletive] course.
  14. If anything, this isn't done nearly enough. Once you reach a tie in the 9th inning, you should go in descending order of pitcher quality, accounting for fatigue as well. Rondon should be pitching this inning. Exactly. If the ridiculous little blooper is caught, the inning goes 1-2-3 and we're not having this conversation.
  15. So saw that coming. Rondon's numbers take a huge hit over a bunch of pansy ass garbage and then one (sort of) bad pitch. [expletive]. If I'm Rondon, I'm consulting a witch doctor or something.
  16. The way the aging curve has veered young in MLB over the last five years has been crazy. Maybe it's a bit younger than where it was 10 years ago, but it's not crazy. If you look at the fWAR leaders over the past few years, most of them are right where you would naturally expect them to be age wise: between 26 and 32 (Trout being the only real outlier). I don't see some shocking trend where the "prime" curve has shifted dramatically. Pujols is 34 and Fielder has a bad body. Their declines have not been shocking. Gonzalez is the one that has surprised me a bit; I figured it would have been a couple more years before his WAR dipped under 3.
  17. Yeah, it's gonna get bumpy riding that one out. Still, it might be trumped in the worst value category by Verlander's before all is said and done.
  18. This. I hate yo-yoing guys like that. He's finally gotten over his BB (somewhat) and injury problems because he's in the pen. All you are doing by reconverting is begging for them to return. Agree, almost solely for the injury concerns.
  19. To be fair, Hoyer was GM of the Padres for like five minutes (well, two years). Not exactly enough time to make much of a mark. And Byrnes has pretty much made the worst of things in the limited time since. None of that excuses what has transpired in the last 2 1/2 years with the Cubs, but it's much easier and more justifiable to assign (some) blame to Hendry for the Cubs' state in 2011 than it is to assign blame to Hoyer for the Padres' state when Byrnes took over.
  20. I like Brett a lot and still think he's an apologist. Yeah, I feel the same way.
  21. As far as I know, Parks and Epstein are the only ones to comment, and Epstein isn't exactly motivated to tell the truth. Well I don't hold Parks in the highest of regard, so I'd be curious to hear what others have to say. Still, I'm pretty far from legitimate concern over Almora.
  22. Obviously, and davell may not have done the best job expressing what he meant. That said, there are things that cannot be gleaned from any amount of statistics or statistical analysis. Those things can only make us feel better about poor statistical performance for so long, but I feel we're still well inside that window with Almora. If people who know their [expletive] say they're not worried about him, I'll take some comfort in that. For now. what makes you think stupid jason parks is one of those people though? how many times do you think he's actually seen almora this year? Is Parks the only one who's said that they're not worried about Almora?
  23. When he hits the ball, he tends to hit it really hard. Contact is the problem. Combination of being too passive early in the count and too aggressive deep in the count, and bad pitch recognition (IMO). It doesn't look promising. That's not even true. He has an anemic LD%. If you got bonus points for far HRs he might have value as a 25th guy Yeah, I was trying to be positive, I guess. He's a guy who is lost at the plate but occasionally runs into one with his huge raw power.
