    i hope you're right That was part of my point - shows a flash, until it is realized that if you don't throw him fastballs, he looks foolish. After he hit that homer, Wainwright fed him breaking/offspeed stuff the rest of the game and made him look stupid.

    As much as he struck out, Sosa never really struck out nearly as much as Lake has thus far. Sosa obviously got more selective, though his K rate actually didn't change all that much over the course of his career. He just started approaching pitches on or off the outer half differently (either taking them the other way or not swinging at them). Lake just seems completely befuddled by just about all breaking pitches. It's early, and while there's still some hope for Lake, I'm not sure his pitch recognition issues can be remedied enough to allow him to become a useful regular. I fear what Wainwright did to him on Saturday will turn out to be a microcosm of his career. If he can figure it out, he could be pretty good. And while I'd prefer he figure it out in AAA, I'm not completely opposed to giving him 400+ ABs on the big league club this year.

No one is going to pay any mind to Vitters unless he shows that he can field at all and hit at the next level (except for Kyle), and Jackson has been residing in the toilet for a while.

    You still have not enough pitching and Olt isn't becoming a legit starter. He's just keeping the seat warm for Kris Bryant. Bryant's almost certainly going to the OF regardless of what Olt does.

    Yeah, I love Theo and Jed, but they need to contract an agency to hire their next manager. It's amazing how they can hire a guy who seems to love to do they things they hate (ostensibly). If this is how it is gonna be, they might as well have hired Ryno.

    It's obnoxious to be sure, but he's still miles easier to tolerate than Hawk, imo. Really, we've just been spoiled when it comes to announcers. It's a sea of mediocrity and worse out there.

    This was a fun game. Rizzo reclaiming some of his missing babip from last year (against LHP, no less), Castro continuing to look good, Olt with a decent game and Hammel looking good for the most part. And Lake obliterating that ball was fun to watch. It didn't get a ton of loft, but you're not going to see too many homers hit harder than that. Only one of those things is bad. In a hypothetical world where either of them are true, you're probably right. Well, Olt may actually end up sucking, but that remains to be seen.

    I think it's the nature of the sport, but I don't think it's that baseball players care less. Because it is a sport of precision and control, getting all amped up in baseball is counterproductive. The best performers are the ones who don't get swept up in the emotion of the moment. Baseball is a relatively cerebral sport, and that is reflected in how demonstrative players are (or aren't). But I don't believe for a second that baseball players care less than any other athletes.

    Wow. Not at all to me. I love watching say, Felix Hernandez pitch against Yu Darvish. Yeah, I watch random games on MLB EI all the time (maybe not two terrible teams playing) that I still find much more compelling than playoff hockey or, say, World Cup soccer. Playoff baseball trumps everything for me, even if the Cubs aren't participating. The only time I've turned a blind eye to playoff baseball was the 2005 World Series, because there was no good outcome possible.

    Playing, watching and being a big fan of a sport can be very different things, though. I've always liked playing soccer, but find it to be almost impossibly boring to watch on TV. If you look at the things like the Harris poll, soccer is a long, long way from matching baseball in popularity among sports fans.

    Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Dawson is the only one that comes close. BOOO THESE MEN Admittedly, the only Sandberg I watched was the crappy 96-97 one. If you had been watching from the mid-80's to early 90's, you'd feel a lot differently, I'll bet. Especially if you were an impressionable kid at the time. Finding out what a tool he is was really disappointing for me.

    Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Dawson is the only one that comes close. I feel the same way. A big part of me wants to dislike him because of his views as a coach/manager, but he was by far my favorite player growing up. Sosa is right there, though, and the Hawk isn't far behind. Wood is up there for me, too.

    You're not going to sign guys to big deals that are already in their mid-30's. These megadeals are being given to guys in their early 30s, and while there will always be some of them on the market, the number of great ones will dwindle as more and more teams lock their guys up early, and through the end of their prime years.
