  1. so if a person has a 0.08 and kills another driver, does he deserve empathy then? yes, because .08 should not be the legal limit Well, in the same sense 55 shouldn't be the speed limit. I like both where they are. I agree. Is 55 the fastest one can drive and maintain control? Of course not. It's a safe speed. These laws aren't about pushing the envelope. Safety limits should always be set below actual tolerance levels. What we don't need are brainless cowboys out there deciding that .08 to them isn't the same as .08 to others. The .08 level is where it is because the vast majority of people aren't drunk at that point. For some that is well below their tolerance, for others, they may be pretty buzzed. But the law isn't supposed to be subjective. If people don't like it, tough eggs. I hope they get pulled over.
  2. Hmm. I have the original 60gb PS3 and it has played every PS2 game I own (about 40 games, I tested it out). Could just be that I have all the right games. I have not had nearly as much luck playing XBox games on my 360.
  3. Probably not, but give it time. The notion that talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous is common sense, but fairly new. People have known for decades that drunk drivers kill people. There is hardly anyone these days who hasn't had their life impacted in some way by a drunk driver. There is anti-drunk driving propaganda everywhere providing every conceivable reason not to do it. Testimonials on TV, radio, billboards, deaths on the nightly news, etc. Our society is inundated with it. The point of this is that it is in the consciousness of everyone. To ignore it and go out and drink with every intention of driving afterwards, you have to make the decision to ignore the fact that you know it is a dangerous thing to do, ignore the fact that it is illegal, and for very good reasons. It is a disgustingly flippant and selfish thing to do. And this is a big part of the point. More often than not, the decision to drive drunk is made long before the act. People know before they even leave the house (or work or wherever) that they are going to drink, and they are going to drive afterwards. They have no intention of calling a cab, and the bartender shouldn't be responsible for making them do so. There is no mistake being made here, but an act of premeditated selfishness and willful ignorance of the possible consequences, pure and simple.
  4. Yeah, except to insinuate that Leyritz had never driven drunk before stretches credulity. More often than not, these things don't happen the first time someone gets behind the wheel drunk. And at Leyritz's age, I really, really, doubt it. Maybe if the guy was 20 years old, but at 44? Come on. At that age, there is zero excuse. For a grown adult to get behind the wheel of a car drunk isn't a simple mistake, but an act of negligence and blatant disregard for the safety of others. Some people may think it is their God-given right to have a few and drive, and expect a mulligan the first time something bad happens. Well, it's not. Just because a person doesn't expect to cause a fatal accident when they toss a few back and drive home (probably because they've been driving drunk/buzzed for years, and are complacent), doesn't mean they deserve one shred of sympathy if they do. It's really the simplest thing: Don't drink and drive. Don't rationalize about your tolerance, don't try and tell yourself you drive all right buzzed, that you do it all the time and have never had an accident, etc., just don't do it. It's that simple.
  5. Not sure where you heard that. There are hundreds of games that are backwards compatible. Having said that, once I started playing the next gen games, I never go back and play the old ones. And really, the only games I have that are BC are the Halo series. The 360's backward compatibility sucks hard. A lot of games work, but a lot don't, and it's hard to know which beforehand. The PS3's backwards compatibility (on the models that have it) is universal.
  6. Then wouldn't a Murton, Cedeno, and Gallagher proposal be equal, if not better than that? Even then I don't even know if I do it. I just don't think Bedard will stay healthy enough to be worth the loss of young promising players. Hart > Murton Parra > Gallagher Cedeno > A ball SS
  7. It sure wasn't accidental when Jim was boozing himself up. I don't have one iota of sympathy for anyone who drinks and drives, not one. They don't deserve it. If you voluntarily impair yourself and then drive, you are 100% culpable. If you drink and get behind the wheel, you deserve whatever bad happens to you. It's the people you hurt and/or kill that deserve 100% of the sympathy.
  8. FYI, they traded Garland for OCab a month ago. That probably registers as doing something a smidge more than signing Ramirez. Maybe he meant something with the potential to be positive.
  9. I guess no matter how bad Illinois is, they have at least one sure non-conference win every year. But man, that was an ugly game. This is gonna be a long season for Illini fans. Things might improve a bit if Frazier is benched.
  10. To be fair, Rotoworld has been late to the party a few times this offseason.
  11. I'm sure Theriot is a nice guy, but he is clearly the weak link here.
  12. That's realistic. I don't think we have what it would take to get Bedard unfortunately. And yes, I'd rather see Bedard here over Roberts. I hope the Reds don't get Bedard. That would really, really suck. That would mostly really really suck for Bedard. I think they will give up too much to get him should it happen. Why? It would be several steps up from Baltimore. His numbers would suffer a bit. GABP isn't that much more a hitter's park than Camden, but enough to make a difference, I think.
  13. Cabrera would probably be no bigger than an upgrade than Roberts would be. If it were just Cabrera vs Theriot and Roberts vs DeRosa, Cabrera would be a little bigger of an upgrade, but adding in the factor of DeRosa taking away 200 AB's or more from Fontenot and Roberts becomes the better upgrade. I would tend to agree. Depends, VORP-wise, the Roberts to DeRo bump is about the same as the Theriot to OCab bump for 2007, but if you look at Roberts and OCab's 2006, and compare them to the Cub's 2007, you'd be much better off with OCab. Looking at a couple different advanced defensive metrics and it appears as though DeRo and Theriot were actually slightly better than Roberts and OCab in 2007. I think your analysis negates the fact that DeRosa would still be here, playing, and likely replacing potentially poor numbers. I think a Roberts trade may bump Fontenot from the roster, which is a good thing.
  14. You know that bad things can happen when you put the ball in play, right? For example, because Theriot makes contact so often, he cost the Cubs 5 double plays more than the average MLB player would have made last year. Soriano, on the other hand, was better at avoiding double plays than any other Cubs starter (unless you want to count Felix Pie). There is a demonstrable negative correlation between strikeout rate and double play rate. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=292385 It's just my opinion, but I thought GIDP's were more of a problem for the Cubs than K's in 2007. Far more, actually.
  15. I didn't know there was an issue, I thought he was going to wear #1.
  16. Except that the '72 Dolphins need to go away more than the Patriots do.
  17. No, this thread is a total debacle. It's actually kind of amusing.
  18. Lots of cheaters in the hall of fame. Spitball throwers, sign stealers...how about Ty Cobb's sharpened spikes? willing to cheat =/= steroid user This is a great point. IF Sammy used (and that's a big "if), it was not illegal or outlawed by MLB the years he was most likely juicing. That does not condone it, but if he did it, it was technically "within the rules." Compare this to someone like Gaylord Perry, who admitted to throwing an illegal pitch for most of his career, was caught on at least one occasion with a foriegn substance/object, and yet he seems to be revered. Would you be in favor of expelling him from the Hall of Fame seeing as it's a fact that he cheated, rather than keeping someone out based on speculation and public opinion? It makes no sense. Competitors in all arenas have always looked to gain an edge though whatever means are possible, but within reason (or not). The fact that others in previous eras did not juice is only due to the lack of juice. It is difficult for me to revere or admire athletes from bygone days when I know full well that the scope of their cheating was only limited by the methods available to them. The notion that they somehow had more integrity than players of the steroid era is just ridiculous, IMO.
  19. Well, there's an idea. Jim should get on that one right away.
  20. If I'm trading Marmol, I want something more than another reliever who is going to cost $40-50 million next year. If I felt comfortable that Carlos would still have his right arm intact by the end of 2008, I would agree.
  21. I think they need a RH bat. Assuming Murton is dealt or somehow starting with Fukudome in center, they will have no RH bat on the bench. Blanco will be there, but he's not a bat. If Cedeno or Theriot is the backup, that's not a legit bat. Ward at least provides one legit bench bat from the left. If Murton is gone, they won't have any RH bat. I'm sure they hope DeRosa will be that guy. He's still probably going to start more often than not. Unless the Cubs pick up Roberts. Then he'd be splitting time with Fukudome, Roberts and Aram.
  22. So the word is that the Twins would want Marmol in any deal for Nathan. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd trade Marmol and others for Nathan without much thought.
  23. If SD is shopping him (and I have no idea why they would), Jim would be an idiot not to get in on it. Keep in mind that moving from Petco to Wrigley would inflate his stats dramatically. Replacing Theriot with Greene makes the Cubs the clear favorite in the Central. But again, I have no idea why the Padres would do this.
  24. Oh, I am pretty sure Gagne is penciled in as the closer. We'll see how that turns out.
