  1. Also, LJ Shelton was cut. He's a solid OT. More of a RT, but should be pretty cheap. I'd be interested depending on the price. I'd still like to draft a stud LT. I wonder if he or Tait could play guard. Tait would still be good @ RT, IMO. It's where he wants to play, too. If LJ could play OG, that might be something to look at. I'll be screaming at the TV if we don't draft at least a solid prospect LT. We should probably be picking up 2 solid OL options this offseason just to shore things up for '09 (usually takes more than a year to gel a new line). Then if Beekman turns out O.K. we could be alright.
  2. True. One of the reasons I couldn't help but like him though was because he didn't give a damn.
  3. Sosa wouldn't grant me an interview in '01 to discuss his obvious cheating. Therefore he's the devil. At every opportunity, we should all pile on and heap scorn upon his name.
  4. Steve has the advantage of not only being an innings eater, but also a stress magnifier and a grey hair producer.
  5. Yeah well the verdict is in: Angelos should have stuck with what he was successful at. It ain't baseball.
  6. It's funny how Mark Grace, who did have a messy divorce from the Cubs and was as slow as molasses around the bases, was never similarly thrown under the bus. Grace was friendly with many of the sportscasters around town. I'm thinking that's why.
  7. Yes, they do. There's also the built-in humor of Canseco calling anyone else dirty.
  8. Canseco just called McNamee a liar. Interesting... http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/sports&id=5949089
  9. Pie would really have to suck for Payton to be a viable fall back plan. PECOTA projects an OPS for .697 for Payton. I just have a really bad feeling Pie's not going to hit. I think it is important to have realistic expectations of how he'll preform. I think it is realistic to expect a league average CF production from Pie with well above league average fielding. To me the problem is not putting Pie in CF it is that the Cubs don't have a strong enough team to let a talented young CF learn to be a major league player. They need Pie to produce. What is league average offense for a CF? My fear is that he'll be terrible, like .220/.283 kind of terrible. I know, I need to have more faith  .272/.337/.420. If Pie does that, the Cubs will have an above average offense next year, and possibly a top 5 offense. 7 of their 8 positions will be average or better, with a few of them having the potential to be significantly above. If Pie does that I'd be overjoyed.

  11. False hustle. That's got to be the new game thread phrase for '08. Bye-bye "fake rally"

  13. Too bad this board is dripping with sarcasm just about every thread too, but oh well. Well, to clarify, none of it is intended to personally offend someone. And if it is, Modzilla is on it pretty quickly. Ehhhh....OK I agree with you in general but people around here have become pretty creative at trashing someone without violating the rules.

  15. It's just not a good match for us, that much I agree with. I understand the O's want to get as much as possible for their guy, but again -- pitching. We really don't this luxury abundance of it to be tossing potential starters out in trades all over the place. I really want to see what Gallagher has for '08 now. Please don't trade him.
  16. Eh, I'm starting to agree with some others. If Gally is adding velocity, we might be better off seeing if he's our back of the rotation guy. Pitching >> luxury player.
  17. I wouldn't like that draft. Jones is not a franchise back. He's a guy that I see having to share time. Cherilus is a RT. That leaves Tait at LT, which isn't good. Baker will be gone by the 2nd. And I think that's too high to pick Flacco. yeah, again: drafting a RB in the 1st round would be a mistake. I can't see Baker lasting until the 2nd. I don't mind the trade-down idea though.
  18. I don't know man, but this thing just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.
  19. OK, just so we're clear: I in no way, shape, or form would want to draft Flacco with a top pick. If he's going to go that high, forget it. We have other needs the must be addressed first, IMO. Anyway I wouldn't draft a guy who hasn't faced top competition high unless he had crazy skills.
  20. Lots were clamoring for Theriot when Izturis was the other option. Theriot was a better choice than Izturis. That doesn't mean SS isn't a hole for the Cubs. Yeah, Riot was a much better option than Izzy. However, that doesn't exactly say how good he is. He's average at best. We could get by with him at SS, but an upgrade is entirely possible. I don't want to get by with him. I distinctly remember people wanting Theriot, but I also remember us dropping games and losing ground with Izzy @ SS, and since Theriot is better than him, I see no contradiction between wanting him then and wanting him replaced now. BTW--I think folks would generally be alright with Ryan as a bench player. He can play 2B + SS in a pinch, at least give someone else a rest.
  21. that's an impressive list, but the bears need to go early with an o-lineman if they keep their first pick. The O-line should be the offseason's #1 priority, I agree. Drafting a RB high would be a huge mistake. I pray Angelo isn't even thinking about it.
  22. nah not likely, TSN prefers defense over offense. Soto and Blanco are both pretty damn good defensivley, and the fact that Soto should actually produce some offense, its very likely the Cubs will have the 2nd or 3rd best production in the NL from Catcher. I can't accept that Soto will produce offensively yet. Not a big enough sample size @ MLB level. Here's hoping he does, he would be an amazing NL catcher if he brought his defense to the table and doubled it up with a little O.
  23. Anyone interested in Joe Flacco @ QB? He played for Delaware -- I picked up on him when they played against the Salukis in the playoffs. He murdered them on seemingly every play with incredible throws. He's tall 6'6" I believe, has a rocket arm, which he proved in a recent college QB competition (I believe he threw it the longest). He seems to possess good improvisational ability from what I've seen. I'm not big on spending a top pick for QB because we need OL. Looking for a possible bargain pickup here. A Romo kind of guy who can sit for a couple years and see what happens.
  24. How can they possibly have SD that high on the list? Both their catchers are horrible defensively at a position where defense is the primary skill.
  25. Ugh, I don't envy the day of opening up hundreds of IE windows and trying to score tix when I need to get work done :( Brewer tix go on sale Feb 23rd, BTW. I like the idea of a Saturday rather than a Friday. That's going to be one ticket-hounding-madness weekend.
