  1. I'm not convinced Hendry is even going to be allowed to make anything more than some minor moves until the club is sold. I could be wrong, but it sort of looks like they're just going to let Zambrano play out his contract, then leave.
  2. The payoff is pretty amazing though. And the careers can be pretty long, too. And they tend to leave guys with relatively few crippling injuries. There are definitely drawbacks, but I think some of the benefits are attractive as well.
  3. Well yeah, that's what I was trying to say. If he really cared about a solution, he'd be meeting with some of the great American black groups out there and working on increasing interest in the game instead of political grandstanding and playing off the Braves' fear of being called racist. I'm sure his meeting with the Braves was real productive. It undoubedtly consisted of Jackson flapping his mouth for a couple hours while petrified Braves front office staff nod their heads with plastic smiles painted on their faces, terrified of giving Jackson even the slightest inkling that they might not agree with him 100%. I mean it's just stark raving madness.
  4. In other words, people make this stupid disctinction all the time even though they are wrong, so the only right thing to do is keep doing it. Soriano and Sosa are both black. What they are not is african american. this is an unproductive statement. In my definition, I'm distinguishing people by ethnicity. in yours, you distinguish them by skin color. how is that helpful? So you're saying that Renteria is not black? Keep telling yourself that, but I'm pretty sure he's one of the blackest people ever. Yeah, I must admit I'm having difficulty figuring out where Derwood is going on this one. To me, a black person can trace their ancestry back to African tribes. Doesn't matter to me where their forefathers wound up when they crossed the Atlantic. U.S.A., Dominican, Mexico -- why should this matter? Black people have a diverse, complex history of migration just as Caucasians do. Doesn't mean they aren't black. And it certainly shouldn't mean they are segregated away from African Americans in order to cry racism. It's like Jesse Jackson doesn't even accept that they are worthy of being part of the discussion. That's crap, IMO.
  5. Yeah the whole "he isn't black, he was born in the Dominican" thing makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. And those stats they show that say only 6% black in the major leagues. I assume that's really AMERICAN blacks. Sosa and Soriano don't count, I guess. They're really hispanic, LOL. How do we let people get away with such disingenuous drivel? I guess the fear of being called racist has become so strong that most people will simply agree with whatever anyone says regardless of whether it's really factual or not.
  6. It's amazing how far we've come from the "Tyrus Sucks" and "Wasted Pick" comments that were being made about Tyrus at the beginning of the year.
  7. Maybe Jesse should meet with American blacks over their lack of participation in baseball. But no, we wouldn't want to attack the actual source of a problem when we can engage in high profile grandstanding instead.
  8. Theriot's got more RBIs than Soriano. I'm sorry, but there's something fundamentally wrong with that. I maintain Soriano shouldn't be hitting leadoff. Yes, yes, I know -- it's not going to change. That doesn't make it correct.
  9. I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone (Bulls fan or not) who thinks it will happen. However, like many people pointed out, if the Bulls do pull off the upset, it would make things verrrrrry interesting after that. At least it makes the game interesting.
  10. Still an issue that needs to be resolved. Come on. You know damn well if he doesn't send the runners they'll be stranded at 3rd almost every time.
  11. Yes, and I understand he visits Goodall on Wednesday, where the smart money says he will receive an 8 game suspension. I hope Dvoracek is ready to step in.
  12. Yeah. Of course if the Bulls had held on to game 3, I'd expect a different Pistons team would have come out today and the Bulls might still be going to Detroit down 3-1. But still, game 3 was a major disappointment. I'm sure glad they came out and fought today. Detroit went on their comback run again, and this time finally we hit a few shots and defended a little better. If nothing else, hopefully they'll put that in their back pocket and learn from it. Got to snuff out those comebacks in the playoffs.
  13. So he's just sitting around not doing anything at this point? Awesome. And his paycheck keeps rollin' in, too. I definitely chose the wrong line of work.
  14. Finally they stood up to the Pistons run. Thank God we aren't going to get swept.
  15. Anyone else suprised by Ward's career numbers? For some reason, I always thought he had put up much better power numbers when he was with Houston.
  16. I had completely flaked on Howard. Didn't remember he should be playing. It makes it even worse -- we've been getting pounded by these guys and they don't even have their best player.
  17. LOL, someone tell Rammy he's going to need to be better with his throws now.
  18. You've got to be kidding me. Now Lee is hurt?
  19. It's really depressing. We're already 8 games back, and it really does look out of reach, now. I'm sure most of us have started seeing a Wild Card possibility, because it doesnt look too good in the central.. There's a long way to go yet, but it sure does look like the wild card will be the 2nd place team from the East -- i.e. Mets/Braves, whoever loses that race. Lots can happen though. 128 games to go. there's no way 8 games can be made up in the standings. It requires 2 things to happen: 1) We play much, much better. This does not look all that likely at the moment. I hope it changes. 2) Teams ahead of us play much, much worse. Call me crazy, but I don't see the Brewers, Mets, Braves starting to suck. Sure, that might be wrong, but right now those teams just look much better than we are.
  20. Is that what the payroll is now...good god that is pathetic. This year the payroll is about $100 million. The Payroll topic in Transaction says $113.58 mil... That includes Wood, Prior, and Rusch, though. ESPN says about $100 million, but that's the current roster salaries, not the actual payroll. I believe the payroll thread includes some of the deadweight, which brings us closer to $115 million. We pretty much know now that this team won't perform anywhere near what a $115 million team would be expected to. Sure, we suspected it even before the season, but now there's a month and a half in the books, we're below .500 but near the top of the league in payroll. And it's only going to get worse over the next few years, so I'm starting to feel comfortable saying if we sell the team to someone who doesn't give out blank checks, there's going to be some major, major hack n' slash taking place. As in, we're looking at atrocious baseball for a couple years while the new owner tries to turn around our salary layouts.
