I am not disputing that Barrett/Lou's tirade effected the Cubs, but every Cub player I heard interviewed said those two things had nothing to do with it. Or maybe they just don't want to admit it because they are professional athletes who can do it themselves. Agreed, it drives me nuts when I see the media play up the whole Barrett/Z fight or the Piniella outburst as the turning point. The Cubs didn't play any better until three weeks after both of those incidents, when we played the White Sox at the cell. I think Marmol's emergence in the bullpen has much more to do with this winning streak than anything else. The 10 games leading up to June 2nd we were on a 6 game losing streak and had lost 8 of our last 10 games. After Piniella's blowup, June 3rd and onward, we won 5 of our next 6 games, and won 6 of 10. Going from a .200 winning pct to .600 isn't playing any better?

Or maybe they just don't want to admit it because they are professional athletes who can do it themselves. Yep, I heard all the players' comments about it not having an effect at all. Call me crazy, but I think it did have some effect. Not that I think it was the only thing, far from it. But a fight like that, it can affect the emotional state of the team. Some guys get real serious about it, some just sort of laugh, some might be relieved at the release of tension -- and some might just get more angry. Change the emotional state of guys, eh -- maybe you affect what happens on the field a little bit. It's not something I think can be predicted, nor do I think it would ever be the sole reason for anything, or even the biggest factor, ever.

I hope this doesn't have the same effect Lou's tirade/Barrett's fight had on us. Better damn well not.

You should not talk religion in the workplace, ever. Agreed. Potentially divisive subject matter isn't good for the workplace environment. Politics and Religion are big no-no's for me. Politics, religion and money should never be discussed in mixed company. I just avoid it. It's not worth it. Instead, I come here and bash heads with you guys & gals 8-) -
Unfortunately the most likely explanation for his poor performance today was that he's Sean Marshall. Weak argument. How is what he said in any way wrong? Right now Marshall is a No. 5, No. 5's get lit up from time to time. He's young and he's not a guy that you expect to dominate every time he steps on the mound, he's the exact kind of pitcher that you would expect to give up a lot of runs every once in a while. Seemed to me the tone of his post was meant to convey that Sean is a terrible pitcher. That is clearly not the case, at least not up until today's outing.

Unfortunately the most likely explanation for his poor performance today was that he's Sean Marshall. Sean's been one of the best #5 pitchers in the league, up until today.

So did I...but I realized he wasn't that good...ever. Bigger/better hitter... Larry Whigham or Chris Harris? Big Hitter, whatever. I've been begging for a safety that can handle pass coverage the past 3 years. (Other than Mike Brown of course) ?? I'm not arguing with you. I think Chris Harris was a mediocre safety, at best. Whigham wasn't anything special, either. I'm just asking which of those two people think was a bigger hitter. They were/are both pretty well known for laying the wood on guys. Not sure which I would take. I think being a good hitter in the Bears secondary is a prerequesite to getting much time at all. Guys like Mike Green, who couldn't hit hard and then struggled in coverage, have been let go pretty quickly. Even our scrubs, such as McGowan and Worrell, have been able to lay the wood. In coverage I found Harris to be lacking, and he would overrun tackles a little too often for my taste. That's why I'm not upset he was dealt. However, there's no question he was a great guy, and he's definitely good enough to stay in the league for awhile.

I think McGowan's always been better than Harris too, he's just not stayed healthy enough to prove it.

I can't figure it out either. We've got proven HR hitters on this club. They just aren't doing it. Any of them.

Wow. This might be because Kevin Payne has been impressive in camp, and Harris really hasn't. I could be wrong though, but I've been hearing the coaches are very impressed with Payne early.
