  1. Mike sounds like the road-grading (grating?) linemen the Cowboys like.
  2. Interesting, thanks. I keep wanting to think this is a bad move for Florida, but I just can't figure out how it is.
  3.   awesome I can't believe he actually referred to getting thrown out taking extra bases as something he wants to do. That's an awesome quote.
  4. My problem with subtracting value from a player due to his contract from the time of his addition is it's too presumptive. The good thing about Greinke is that he's a 5 WAR player who will earn $13 mil the next two years. There's not that many players like that available and fewer that Milwaukee would have seriously pursued. It's more accurate, I think, to look at the prospects lost in the deal and the downgrade from Escobar to Betancourt rather than hypothetical situations the Brewers likely wouldn't have been involved in anyway (Crawford, Lee). I don't think the trade was worth it, but not because the Brewers now can't pursue Crawford, Lee or some other major player they probably wouldn't have anyway. It's more because they mortgaged their future and didn't get enough of an upgrade in return.
  5. Interesting. I hadn't heard those criticisms of Mike Pouncey to this point. I knew he developed a little more slowly than his brother in some areas (the reason he stayed in college while Maurkice left), but was under the impression he was pretty similar to his brother at this point.
  6. GR and other ND fans, What do you think of Florida hiring Weis? Seems like he really struggled developing players at ND, even though he is excellent scheme-wise (as evidenced by his NFL success). It's clear he can recruit, but will his coaching shortcomings at ND follow him to UF?
  7. I could live with that. The criticism of Smith makes sense, given that he's a former good NFL player. I'd figure he'd be great with technique, but wasn't sure about his recruiting and overall ability to coach. I'm intrigued by Sirmon since he was solid for the Titans for a while, but I wonder how well he can recruit.
  8. If that offer was on the table, then that would have been a better option, but San Diego isn't that much closer to being good. They have a better chance to back into the playoffs because of a bad division, but it's not like the difference is a World Series contender and a bottom feeder. It's very realistic both could be bottom feeders this year. Also, you mentioned the Pirates, Royals and Cubs. None of those teams had any reason to be interested. The Cubs were looking for a left handed bat for first and had already signed Pena, the Royals have Butler and the Pirates, if they're that much better of a bet to win, don't have a need at first. I don't know of any likely contenders that do have needs at first. This way, at least, DLee knows there will be a strong likelihood that if he has a big first half of the year he may be dealt to a contender at the deadline. It wasn't a good move if it blocks a prospect who's ready for the majors, but if they don't have one (which I don't know either way), then this is a short term move to both satisfy fans that you aren't intentionally tanking and it gives you a guy who could have a big first half and then be dealt for prospects at the deadline.
  9. Wasn't that before Montreal moved? I think Milwaukee's a lot more stable than Montreal was at the time and has better ML talent, but it's similar in that neither team was good enough to make those moves, I think.
  10. Re-signing Weeks at this point is probably a good idea. I don't know that much about Lawrie, but my biggest issue with the trade is dealing a top 100 prospect for a guy who's been pretty mediocre overall, is 28 (I think) and coming off a career year. You're paying for the career year that he's pretty unlikely to repeat - much the same with Greinke, except Greinke's a lot better. The Brewers are definitely going to have to scout and develop well now. If they can make a deep run in the playoffs here, I think they were a series of successful trades even if they do set the organization back over the long term. And Melvin probably had to do it to keep his job. However, I don't think the return was good enough to maximize their ability to contend.
  11. Yeah, he's easily as good as his brother. I'm curious to see if the bad snaps will downgrade his perception some, even though I doubt anybody will draft him as a center.
  12. I figured Major Applewhite would be the OC if he didn't go to Florida.
  13. Horned Frog for the day, here. I'm a big TCU fan today too.
  14. Photos were taken of him partying with strippers.
  15. I don't remember where I read it, but somebody compared their requirements to Teryl Austin's resume and said it matched pretty much perfectly. I think he was also the first guy rumored to have interviewed for it.
  16. so awesome. when was the last time a coach was hired to a BCS school only to be fired before coaching a game? Mike Price at Alabama, I think he was hired after Shula and before Saban.
  17. For what it's worth shnsajax and other Texas fans: Assuming this is legit, and it probably is, this is really good for UT. Wilcox did about as well as realistically possible with the lack of talent he inherited and continuity is very important for Tennessee at this point.
  18. My hope is that we'd sign one of these guys instead of trading for Garza. This is the rotation I'd envision: Demp Z Wells Francis/Duchsherer/etc Cashner Silva is then either traded or put in a long relief role to be moved into the rotation should anybody get hurt. Gorz could be traded as well. I think he could bring something decent in return. Not great, but decent. Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
  19. My hope is that we'd sign one of these guys instead of trading for Garza. This is the rotation I'd envision: Demp Z Wells Francis/Duchsherer/etc Cashner Silva is then either traded or put in a long relief role to be moved into the rotation should anybody get hurt.
  20. He's had some of the best expressions I've ever seen throughout the years.
  21. I just don't think the Brewers were close enough to being really good to mortgage the future so badly. They're much close to being a playoff team now, but there's still question whether they'll even make the playoffs still. If a payroll increase accompanied these moves, that'd be different. But if they don't win the World Series this season or next, they've pushed their next window back by 3-5 years instead of being patient with the current players coming up.
  22. And that's two veterans they'll be relying on leaving without big-time impact players to replace them. I had forgotten about Gamel, but he won't be an offensive force during the current window anyway. Basically, a mid-market team that's not right on the edge of being really good gave up a ton of cheap production for a two year shot at winning and then their next window won't come until those draft picks develop (3-5 years?). If they were the Rays where they were right on the edge of being great and Greinke/Marcum put them over the top, that'd be one thing. But in their position, I don't see the reward being high enough to give up all they did for a good improvement (Greinke) and a mediocre one (Marcum). Brett Lawrie, a second baseman who was rated the #81 prospect in the minors by BA in 2009 and the #59 prospect in 2010.
  23. The Brewers paid for a career year Marcum may very well not repeat and Rickie Weeks is no safe bet to be healthy/productive long enough to have much value (only played 160 games or close to it once in his career). Fielder is a free agent after this coming season as well. There's a real chance they'll only have Braun and Greinke who will bring them Type A prospects when they leave and they'll have to figure out a way to replace Fielder after this season, likely without having the funds to do so. And that's after giving up 1 MLB player (Escobar) and 3 other near-MLB ready prospects.
  24. He'd be really interesting. Yeah, I was thinking about him as well. Is the A's stadium not a hitter's park? I know the Rockies stadium obviously is which puts Francis's numbers into perspective, but why not Duchscherer? Is his injury worse? Still lingering? What am I missing? Not sure what's going on with Duchsherer, but the As park has always been pretty pitcher friendly I thought. Francis would probably be cheaper than Duchsherer, since he's had less experience and success.
  25. I knew he did the spinning fingers by the head thing multiple times because Tim Priest was worried he'd get flagged for it. Only heard about one throat slash, though.
