  1. I wouldn't restrict my son from playing football, hockey, or boxing. I would be fully understanding of the risks of head injuries thru as much research as possible but it is their choice and up to the parents to provide the risks to their kids. Ideally, I wouldn't my children to play FB, hockey, or boxing. With that said, there's an increased chance with any sport.

  3. Well the problem here is that you feel his ceiling is no higher than a fringe backup catcher. It's more like good backup/bad 2nd division starter. Think of a cross between Chris Snyder and John Buck. Ramirez tore the cover off the ball his entire minor league career until the last 10 games of 2008. Yeah, his offense has taken a step backwards the last couple years but that seems to happen with young catchers from time to time... they hit the upper level of the minors and turn their focus to improving their defense and gamecalling at the expense of their offense. Not exactly shocking for a guy who just transitioned to the position in 05 that he might not have everything figured out in 4 years. Why not see if we've got something with him? He can't be worse than Hill. He could certainly be better. I'm skeptical of a defensive liability, who has to prove he can hit above AA. Its great that he's been compared to Victor Martinez but those days have come and gone. I'm glad he's at AAA. Although since I project Castillo as a backup C with the ceiling of D. Miller, I think hed be best backing up Soto and Ramirez could be at Iowa trying to improve behind the plate and hit at AAA.
  4. I fail to see the love for Ramirez, Hill is terrible but I fail to see any improvement with another Fringe backup C with no ceiling above Fringe.
  5. Me too. I don't think I could stomach a title from the other side of the bracket. Give me a VCU or Butler title. Anyone but Cal. I think I'd rank them VCU Butler UConn __________ please god, no, not either of UK/UNC Heh, the one year I had UK leaving before the Elite 8. I knew they were playing better but I didn't think this was in them.
  6. That's the key, he's going to struggle with his command/control which will lead to high pitch counts and lower IPs as well as the BBs and 0-2 FBs that tail back over the plate. Obviously, its worth letting him develop as a starter to maximize his value/ceiling.
  7. A)Pujols B)Howard/Fielder C)Longoria/Braun/Bruce D)Alvarez/Ike Davis/G Sanchez/Justin Upton/Heyward E)PM'ed
  8. What you need is good players. then they are good everyday, everywhere. If you look at the Rockies, they are not successful when they dominate at home - they are successful when they are good everywhere. not really rocket-science but I dispute that building a team to dominate at home is a good strategy. That's a given but only a handful of teams are going to be good year in and year out and definitely doesn't include the Cubs. I do agree with other posters that it does play like two separate parks at times, although over the course of a year, it usually evens out. If I'm the Padres, I'm going after more flyball pitchers and take my chances with other pitcher parks while knowing there's a good chance of getting rocked at Coors, AZ, etc. Although, someone like Lowe or Webb will do just as well with their sinker. Offensively, I don't think it matters as much as the same qualities that make a flyball hitter like Dunn effective, would still translate well. I do think talent trumps all, though.
  9. Good way to provide substance, if you're not smart enough to grasp a topic then why provide nothing? If you're trying to be witty, you're failing at anything even remotely close to clever. Personally, I think the Cubs have a great opportunity to take advantage of day games but fail to take that approach and would rather view having to get to the park at 9:30 as the negative.
  10. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/03/22/by-the-numbers-do-home-teams-have-an-advantage/ Is there any validity? Is it the constant day time/night time adjusting, just a fluke, or something else?
  11. It wouldn't surprise me, I question what he has left since he has no speed to get IF hits anymore. It is much better than the idiotic M Young rumors. It is worth noting that Hendry and Castillo were in the Marlins organization together.
  12. That's what I get for not taking the 2 minutes to look up his stats. Although, the premise still stands.
  13. I've only been to a couple of Juco games so far this year and there wasn't much of a time difference given the sloppy play. Today will be my 1st 4yr college game. Of course, it includes a D3 school from N. WI and a bad Univ of IL-Chicago team so I'm not expecting a 2hr Fri night game.
  14. I can't imagine him not becoming a bigger cancer if he isn't starting. This is someone who penciled himself as the fourth starter. Then you factor he's a sinkerballer who has never really been in the pen and combine bad attitude and an inability to adjust to the usage with possibly overthrowing the sinker and I can't see it ending well but its a definite possibility.
  15. While it is watered down and there's enough there to remind some of when Silva was passable with the Twins, I don't see anything there that a team would want that wouldn't include anything of value minus paying what the Cubs owe him. Wells: like I mentioned in the locked thread, he is going to be undervalued based of his avg. FB, age, lack of projection, reliance on deception and breaking ball. That is true, especially with the Cubs FO.
  16. 1) The possibility of the book being correct on the premise of the A's and their approach which extends well beyond EXCEL is unlikely. As previously mentioned, "moneyball" is about exploitation of demand weaknesses and not stats. Hell, they have been doing this for years with pitching by get pitchers with less projectable bodies, avg FBs, plus breaking/offspeed pitches and plus command compared to plus projectable bodies/velos. They exploited OBP in regard to scoring runs when avg. And slg were in demand and then when obp had increased demand run prevention became undervalued. Also with the book, the thing that made it interesting was the writing and the inside look of a GM that wasn't sugarcoated. 2) There is group think here, some of which I agree with and some I don't but it is not group think rather than a high percentage of posters with similar views of the game.
  17. Archer is flashing a 91mph plus slider, Chrinos hit a walkoff hr, and former cub Dave Martinez has a better beard than Brian Wilson.
  18. Its only one month, the month by month variations go up and down so much, it could be so many things beyond permanently losing his skill set to where he becomes an albatross. I would guess his bad April was more standard deviation than that much age regression.
  19. His injuries are more degenerative in regards to him regressing more when the playing time he gets increases. The more he plays, the more his back will be aggravated. One month isn't the proper sample, I could use 1st half/2nd half splits and have more validity. Atl just used a player past his prime too hard.
  20. Glaus had a subpar year last year once his injuries caught up to his production, his next role won't be as much as he had with ATL. If used properly, Glaus would outproduce Baker. Ramirez hasn't been able to hit above AA in the PCL.
  21. Great insight. With Glaus, he didn't have nor will he have the health to be an everyday regular as his back and knees won't hold up. Used as a spot starter/PH'er will best suit him unless he finds a DH role and beyond Baker, the Cubs could use some pop from the R side. There's definitely enough of a solid approach, bat speed, and raw power to merit him doing well in a reserved role.
  22. 2 isn't very many and a good number of LHers have their changeup as their out pitch, it sounds like baseball jargon but I like having to make a pitcher change locations and pitches.
  23. My lineups: Vs RHP Fukudome Castro Ramirez Soto Pena Colvin Soriano Dewitt Vs LHP Fukudome Castro Ramirez Soto Soriano Byrd Pena Baker I would love the Cubs to get Glaus before Ramirez gets hurt or Pena struggles.
  24. Use that money towards successfully getting Pujols, they could put Vance @ 3B and still be in good shape.
