    While I think Hudson over Dewitt/Baker is a marginal improvement and not worth the salary difference, Hudson is closer to .350 than .330. I'd rather see whether or not Colvin can start rather than Fukudome, but I'm not in the frame of mind they'll win 81 next year.

    It is a great deal in both years and dollars, still increasing Cashner's odds of ending up in the rotation is the best part of the deal compared to getting a stop-gap starter on the cheap.

    Given the Cubs poor history of jerking around top prospects, I'm skeptical of how they'd handle Cashner regardless of their current situation. With Wood, the marketing aspect needs to recognized.

    Anytime you can trade a likely middle of the rotation starter based on stuff, production, and age who is making #1 starter money, they should pursue it regardless of what is brought back in return (assuming the Cubs absorb none/very of his contract).

    You know it's a bad move when the best part of it that makes it somewhat worthwhile is the secondary outcome. Spending 5 mil on one of the shoulder reclamation projects and having Cashner bounce between the pen at AAA and Chicago is a worse long-term outcome than spending huge money on a questionable set-up guy for a team hopeful for 80 wins.

    I'm not a fan of Bonderman at all and don't see the upside with him, to be honest. Penny would be my choice if we lose out on Webb though. That said, I actually think he's older than Webb, for what it's worth. With Bonderman, his issue last year was mechanical more than health. It was a rehab year coming off the blood clot. With Penny, he maintained velo, production, and stuff despite the weird injury. Webb scares me with the velo. He's not going to survive in the mid 80s.

    I'd rather see Bonderman or Penny at this point over Webb if they're used car shopping. Webb has a substantial past workload, wrong side of 30, borderline velo before injury, below avg secondary pitches. Obviously his sinker was prob the second best single pitch in MLB until he got injured but there are better risk/reward guys avail.

    With the market being established by the contracts of Martinez and Huff, it really is a good deal for the Sox. There's only a 2-3 mil diff between Dunn and them and the production difference is likely far greater than the dollar diff equates to. In an open market, the extra 2 mil will bring a marginal reliever/utility glove. It's a better deal for an AL team than an NL team, I think. They can play Dunn at DH some (a lot later in the contract, I'd say) and negate some of the negative impact of his defense and prolong his likely productivity. It can hide it better having him DH but with his bat, there is still likely a large net gain had the Cubs needed a LF'er or in their case had him end up being a fringy defender at 1B. Its a luxury a NL team can have and is worth the risk.

    That's what I mean that the quality isn't watered down but rather there's no one or two elite teams coming from typically a dynasty driven league (Packers-60s, Steelers-70s, Niners-80s, Cowboys-90s, Pats-00s). This is the parity the NFL has always desired.

    The Pats lost by nearly 3 TD's on the road in Cleveland. They aren't unbeatable. And neither GB or Chi plays NYG this season...unless I'm misunderstanding your post? There's no unbeatable team which is what I mean as far as a bad NFL having no dominant team or dynasty.

    I also should say that this division will be won by an 11 win team. Honestly, both teams should be content with 3-2 records in the next 5. Neither team is better than NE and both NJ teams will be toss-ups although the Giants are playing worse than the Jets. Its fun to enjoy but I'm still skeptical despite a bad NFL.

    Forte did a much better job of waiting for gaps. Anytime you avg 9 yards a carry, its going to include big runs. That line isn't good enough to run the ball in ball control situations nor areForte and Taylor. The big improvement came from the Bears DTs. The Bears won on both sides of the line and as usual the special teams. It was a bad decision to throw with 4 minutes left and not run another 30 seconds off.

    Rothschild did this not b/c of money, it's not the Ricketts doing. Hendry is loyal to those who are to him and Rothschild was very loyal to the Cubs and had opportunities elsewhere in the past (Det). He wanted to be in NY and Hendry instead of keeping someone who would rather be in Ny, be in NY. Riggins knows the system better than anyone and deserves a shot.

    You really don't need evidence to make these assumptions. Was there any evidence with Cousins last year at UK? Was there any evidence with Knight, Lamb, Kantor yet this year? Of course, I think there's some sort of payment going on yet there's nothing there. If Richmond and Abrams can get paid under the table at other programs, why would they choose not to?

    I agree with that as far as Kentucky and their recruitment of players. At the same token, I find it hypocritical that you can't grasp the thought of someone like Richmond/Abrams or their family being paid off in some way to attend U of I. Richmond at the time was prob. the #2 recruit in the country when he committed to Illinois. Why wouldn't they take the money now if it's being offered when they're 13? Hell, between then and now they have time to collect all the AAU money as well as whomever might be paying them to attend Illinois regardless if they commit at 13 or 17.

    You really think players like Richmond and Abrams decided on Illinois based on being in-state, the lovely Champaign-Urbana area, and the Illini basketball tradition? There's no doubt that programs that are able to recruit players like this are going to be recruiting players that are involved in some way with an agent. It might be several degrees of separation from a school to shield them from any wrongdoing, but at the same token, a coach knows whether or not a player has rec'd anything illegally despite playing dumb when [expletive] hits the fan ala Carroll.
