  1. Unless the Cubs are buyers, they're not going to trade Colvin regardless of the run at Iowa. If he gets exposed the rest of the year, they likely go from 77 win team to a 75 team with Colvin out there instead of Fukudome and the know whether they have someone who could project as a starter or a 4th OF'er. Sendhim to Iowa isn't likely going to answer that unless he bombs at Iowa. Next year, they have that freed up salary and whatever they receive for Fukudome and plan accordingly likely with a new GM and new philosophy.
  2. Then what are you going to do with Colvin? They need to see what they got in him. This team isn't going to be competing in the near future with Soriano not going anywhere, it comes down to Byrd and Fukudome and while Byrd would have a higher net return, he's likely a better player at a cheaper cost.
  3. Why would have to be a contract swap for Fukudome? Given the escalated contracts, his production, and ability to play CF, I don't see why the Cubs would have to trade contracts as it would likely defeat the purpose of trading him which would be to clear payroll and obtain younger players.
  4. I'd keep Byrd for now. Obviously, if you get bowled over in a deal you make the trade, but he's in the first year of a three-year deal and shouldn't be overpaid by much, if any, at any point in the deal (max base salary is $6.5 in 2012). He seems to work well with Jaramillo and could be consistent production for us at a relatively cheap price – especially since we don't have a large number of outfielders in the minors he's blocking. I wouldn't shop Byrd either at this point as you mentioned, his contract length nor salary are going to hurt the Cubs chances down the road. I would shop Fukudome, Lilly, and Lee (despite his likely refusal) and go from there.
  5. Found out that Soto signed.... Here's more on Cuneo. http://newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2010-06-16/Sports/Cuneo_drafted_by_Cubs_embarks_on_pro_career.html
  6. That's a reach. He's not athletic enough to play CF'er at the ML level and he doesn't hit with enough pop to play the corner OF spots. Plus, he's not 5'11" 190. He's a tweener.
  7. His curve is going to bring comparisons of R. Hill.
  8. Thats a pretty big upset, IMO. I wasn't really sold on the OU squad and UVA was picked many to play in the championship.
  9. I never said I was blaming it on that, I'm saying it hasn't helped and it's going to stunt his development in those aspects if he cont's to play at this pace. Even at his current pace, he's on pace for about 50BBs if he rec'd 500ABs/550PAs which would be a career high (including minors). He has the tools to merit finding out where he fits on a team with no chance of winning anything this year.
  10. For a rookie playing the yo-yo game, that K ratio isn't too surprising nor is it that bad. Hard to improve timing and pitch recongition given his playing schedule. It's not that he's being treated unfairly (although I think he should be at Iowa if he's not going to start), it's that this teams needs to go in a rebuilding direction and it would answer some serious questions whether or not to find out if he can be a ML regular in the OF.
  11. At this point, I'll all for backing up the truck and Fukudome has a market, I think it should be worth exploring. This team's window closed after '08 and it's time to look forward. Castro, Soto, Cashner, Marmol, etc. should be the younger core that the team builds around. If this team isn't going anywhere (which it isn't), then they need to see whether or not Colvin can become anything other than a 4th OF'er and see what they can get for Fukudome. Of the Cubs higher priced players, he might be one of few who has some trade value.
  12. I'm sure Gray was a fallback option if they didn't sign Vitters.
  13. Sure his scouting background impacts their draft philosophy, it doesn't impact it in a bad way though. The higher up the ladder you go, the more production becomes relevant, the lower do you go, tools become more relevant. Also, what's more important to look at when looking at a college hitter... How he does on Friday nights or his overall body of work? I'd much see his production against their #1 than how he does on a Wed. afternoon vs. a Fresh. Hendry doesn't run the drafts though, Wilken does.
  14. Should do well, strictly a 1B, has done well with wood bats won't likely hit for enough power to be considered a ML regular.
  15. Reliever. Max. effort & no real 3rd pitch to work off his 4 seamer and sinker.
  16. Fitzgerald has a big, physical build that could still add more strength, and is a very good athlete for his size. His fastball was consistently in the 88-91 mph range during the summer and he complemented the pitch with a solid slider and pretty good changeup. Fitzgerald showed command of all three pitches and mixed them up with developing maturity
  17. Pinckard has the highest ceiling of any of the Cubs draftees including Simpson. That might be overstating it a bit, but where he's drafted or his numbers doesn't indicate how go he can be. When BA does their tools, he'll be listed with the best FB.
  18. If they can sign him, I really like the pick of Steven Brooks out of WF.
  19. Cubs select Elliot Soto out of Creighton via Dundee-Crown HS.
  20. Little RH'er committed to Sante Fe CC, 87-90FB, CB.
  21. Reed is just an athletic RH'er with plenty of upside, he's committed to SDSU I believe which might it tougher but he features an 86-89FB who came strong as the year went along.
  22. The minute you sign the contract, you're a professional. The day you make it to the majors, you become a major leaguer.
  23. It should be like this for all the picks... Agreed. I think MLB would be better served having the studio show start half an hour after the draft begins. They can take their time in analyzing guys who have already been selected and do some research, rather than scramble for information and pull random cliches out of their rear ends. They shouldn't ask Hart whether or not he likes a pick or not since he likes every pick regardless if he's ever heard of the guy.
