  1. too many reliable pitchers for him to burn them out. he trusts howry, eyre, williamson, ohman, and dempster COMPLETELY. And I'm sure he trusts Weurtz too based on last year. He can't burn em all out. It's not like when we had the Farns and then Alfonseca and a bunch of rubbish. He can't burn them all out, but he can burn them out to where it becomes a below avg. pen.
  2. The quicker they believe they can win w/out Wood and Prior, the better they will be. If they can remain around 1st place w/out Wood, Prior, and Miller, they'll be looking good as the season progresses. I just hope Dusty won't burn the pen out by July.
  3. 5 games, but who's counting? The Mets have always been my least favorite team.
  4. Brian was there right in front of his parents, wearing a Cubs hat. He isn't hard to miss, considering he's Sean's twin. He was drafted ahead of Sean.
  5. Ebbets Field, you have a baby on the way. It's going to be a replica of the Brooklyn stadium.
  6. in early early ST games, a pitchers goes 2-3 innings, then adds an inning or two steadily throughout. I don't remember any talk early in the spring. once they decided he had a shot, there were maybe 12 days left in ST, and he hadn't pitched more than a couple innings at a time. by the time it even became a possability, there really wasn't enough time to get his pitch count up to where it needed to be to go 6 or 7 innings in a big league game. but I'm sure that's just Dusty's excuse. not the worst decision in the world. if it wasn't the Cardinals or Astros, and maybe even Brewers this year, I would have stuck with him to see if he could get out of the inning, but you have to fight tooth and nail for every W against those divisional teams. It was around mid-March, it's almost been 3 weeks since then. But, most pitchers don't build up stamina in ST games, they do it in side sessions.
  7. If he reminds them of a Florida Senior who did not get drafted, it doesn't say much, which is a shame.
  8. There should be no reason why a potential starter even one that doesn't make the rotation like Williams is not ready for at least 90 pitches at the start. There had been talk for much of ST of Marshall making the rotation, once those rumors started about Marshall passing Hill on the Cubs depth chart, plans should've been made to get him ready to compete in a ML rotation. Having a pitcher avail. for only 60-70 pitches is the role of a reliever thrust into emergency starter, not someone expected to go every 5 -6 days.
  9. Why? He's still slightly below avg. on defense. Though, I thought he did a good job tonite and the SB was off of Williamson. His asset is his bat, it gives him more value than almost any catcher in the NL. I'd rather have that than most of the defense 1st types, see Molina.
  10. On the post game show, Dusty's reasoning for pulling Marshall is that the most he pitched in ST was 4 innings. Then, it's poor planning in the ST. It obviously needs to be increased.
  11. I'm done trading w/Tim. Dellucci gets traded to become a PH'er and Jones has his ankle and knee end up at 3 different places at one time. Oh yeah, The Bees still have the 3rd highest point total, bitches.
  12. Ponson hasn't changed much since last year, switched to more two seamers (Duncan trait) but can't throw a good enough breaking pitch and isn't too effective with his change. He's still out of shape and gets flustered too easily. After the HR to Jones, he missed in the zone to Murton with pitches that had Murton been seeing the ball well, should've crushed.
  13. The 1st game I've been able to watch or listen to all season. I thought Marshall did ok, it'll be interesting all season to watch how teams attack him early. I'd like to see him pitch backwards once thru the order and use his change more to RH'ers. The Cubs didn't have a good approach against Ponson, despite Ponson's lack of velocity, they were trying to pull too much and rolling over everything, the success against Ponson (minus a couple LL hits by Cedeno) were to the opposite and CF. I thought Dusty pulled Marshall too soon, especially bringing in Wuertz into a bases loaded situation, despite that I thought Wuertz pitched well against the heart of the order, including the FB to Pujols. It's good to see Jones make solid contact and make pitchers throw him strikes and get extended.
  14. For some reason Sean Marshall's twin brother Brian Marshall was released. He's a very good pitcher and I hope having Sean in the organization can help sway him to the Cubs if they are interested in him.
  15. Why was it limited to only those two? I fail to see how this is fact, unless you think Hendry was limited to overspending on two players likely to get more than they are worth b/c of a GM's mistake, it will be soon found out that both Encarnacion and Jones were bad moves. I still think a platoon of Sweeney and Marrero would have been a better option than Jones, less money, less years, and one half of the platoon becomes the best bat off the bench. Hendry made a mistake w/Burnitz and repeated it w/Jones and added more years for good measure.
  16. My take on the situation is that I have no problem w/Hendry getting two more years, 4 years is too short of a timeframe to evaluate his work. The Cubs didn't change philosophies or overhaul the system, but they lacked an identity at the major league level. Hendry has helped shape the identity getting Lee (likely inked), Ramirez, and hopefully Barrett, Murton, and Cedeno ecome long-term options as well. After the next two years, we'll have a better idea if Hendry is capable of building an annual favorite. With that said, if the Cubs avg. 85 wins from now till the end of the contract, it's time for a new GM. In short, Hendry's short time as GM deserves a couple more years rather than his previous work, b/c I still don't know if he is or isn't good enough yet. To comment whether or not Hendry is the best out there so we should keep him, insults future GMs with plenty of potential like Moore in ATL and Antonetti in Cleveland. Both are young bright candidates that will likely have successful tenures as GM. That's the same as being content with Jones b/c Giles wasn't leaving SD, there were better and cheaper options avail. for Hendry and you can say the same for Pierre.
  17. I don't know what scouts think of him, but stastically he's pretty damn good.
  18. I also watched Naperville Central although I missed their two best player (Bates and Kaminska sp?). :) I had no idea the Academy meant some thing to you. I'll watch them again when they come to Mundelein with their rematch against Carmel.
  19. I finally got to watch the very talented Benet Academy, which features several of the top players in state, including Miss. St. bound Connor Powers as well as Villanova bound Chris Pack. They won the Schaumburg Flyers HS tourney at Alexian Field over Carmel. Still haven't seen a pitcher hit 90 yet, which will hopefully happen soon.
  20. Jones and Burnitz are pretty much a wash, neither one is good and you can flip a coin as to who will likely have the better year. The reason why Pierre is a better player than Patterson is ability to get on base at a higher ratio rather than speed. Patterson is just as fast and not that far below Pierre in baserunning ability. If Patterson had the same OBP as Pierre, I'd take Patterson. I'm not enamored by Pierre's ability to get on base, it's good in the pure sense of traditional leadoff hitter, but I'd like to see it higher. I also choose not to factor their inability to find a leadoff hitter in the past as a reason to glow about Pierre.
  21. Hendry was the one who pushed for Bruce Kimm to become interim manager and that was a legit audition for the job had he done well. Bruce Kimm didn't have any experience, yet he was able to get a fair shot. Just b/c he valued Baker's experience, success, and style doesn't equate to him only selecting a manager who has experience. I'd go for Orel Hershiser and go from there. If some position players don't like having a former pitcher as coach, they need to grow a pair.
  22. Depends, sometimes if the pitcher is just throwing a get me over FB to get ahead in the count. If it's a good pitch to hit, let them swing. A hitter has a much better chance of having a productive AB on the 1st pitch rather than falling behind 0-1. The hitter just has to use his own hitting zone, if the ball is in a spot where the hitter is comfortable, I'd want the hitter to get a nice level swing from a balanced approach and hit it hard. I'd rather have him do that than try and work from behind, especially if the pitcher has a breaking ball out pitch. If you're facing Zito and you see him throw a FB down the middle, I'd go after it rather than the whiffle ball curve.
  23. Every team has scouts and every scout has a stop watch, every scout wants to see times to 1B between 4.0-4.2 from the L side and 4.1-4.3 from the Rh side. That includes the A's, I happen to know the area scout for the A's and if you see if at a game as I probably will this weekend, he'll have his stop watch. Scouts also want to see 60yd times under 7 as well as 1B to 3B. Speed and fielding have been decreased but, fundamentals are weak from the time they leave little league to the time they get to the majors. Speed has decreased b/c astro-turf is gone and parks have become smaller moreso than "moneyball". Moneyball has had a minimal impact on baseball, but a great impact on fans.
  24. Do we know if that is true with Wilkin? Wilkin does have a greater history of drafting collegiate pos. players than the Cubs, was Brooksie the last Cubs collegiate pos. player drafted in the 1st? Gabe Gross was a 1st rounder out of Auburn, so I think that possibility increases, it can't decrease any given the Cubs lack of collegiate pos. players in the 1st.
