  1. Heck, if I were Strasburg, I'd look into moving to Japan and playing over there for a year or two. At least then he'd be facing a decent level of competition.
  2. Cashner might be in the rotation mix come mid-season, depending on where he starts and how he is looking health-wise. Apparently he's developed his changeup enough this season that he might end up with three quality pitches (along with his FB and slider), which would be excellent news for the Cubs. I'll be shocked if he starts the season in the Cubs' rotation, though. Samardzija...I've pretty much given up on trying to evaluate the guy. He still has a huge ceiling and a ton of promise, but the Cubs rushed him to the majors before he could effectively develop his offspeed stuff. He could develop enough in the offseason to vie for a rotation spot, but my gut is that he'll probably start next season in the AAA rotation until Lou gets grumpy with the bullpen and decides he needs another arm to yo-yo back and forth between the majors and AAA (along with the bullpen and rotation).
  3. Use this as the general signings thread, since the discussion was trending that way in any case.
  4. Might be because these guys need to pass physicals and the like?

  7. Eh, we still have a leg up on the Pirates' system. A year or two from now, I'd expect things to be different in that regard, especially given how their 2009 draft has panned out so far.
  8. Also, if anyone could dig up those columns Sandberg wrote on Yahoo awhile back, you'd see why I have no interest in having the man manage. He said a lot of the same things mentioned in his HOF Speech about fundamentals, bunting, etc.
  9. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, memories...
  10. I was harping on the luck correction earlier in the season. Glad to see him come around. :D
  11. Will someone please get Jay Jackson out of the corner? I think he's learned his lesson. Vitters hit his first HR in the FSL today. Good times.
  12. Offer him arbitration and offer him two years with an option for a third year based on health/IP. If he walks, someone else will scoop him up and forfeit their picks.
  13. Brooks Raley made his professional debut with the AZL Cubs, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one.
  14. I'm with you on that general assessment. Considering a number of the Cubs' top prospects have hit the wall in Daytona following an excellent season in Peoria, it seems like Daytona is a make or break point for our hitters, especially the ones who have had issues with plate discipline. However, considering Jackson is doing nothing short of destroying the ball down in the MWL after a mere 17 games, it's impossible to ignore his success. If he finishes the season OPSing over .900 while walking at a decent rate and keeping his strikeouts at a manageable level, I'll seriously consider him a Top 5 prospect in this system.
  15. I fully expect him to chip away at that number today.
  16. I'd offer Harden arbitration and be open to signing him to a 1-2 year deal. His injury history is really worrying, but when he's on...yikes.

  19. Updates from ongoing games: Iowa's up 6-3 on Tacoma in the 7th. Luis Rivas has three doubles. Boise's going to extras, tied at 3. Whitenack got the start and went 5 innings, striking out 4 and giving up 2 unearned runs. Larry Suarez followed Austin Kirk down in Mesa. He's walked 3 in 1.1 IP so far. C Sergio Burruel is 2/4 with a double (yay!) and a passed ball (boo).
  20. That is fantastic news. He was one of the few bright spots in our system early last season. My memory was that he had very advanced secondary stuff for his age, but a FB that hovered in the 88-90 area. Sounded kind of like a Tim Alderson type of pitcher. Am I right, or is my memory failing me?
  21. His faceplant against the wall was pretty impressive Yeah, he initially had a bad read on it, meaning he had to run like heck to make the catch, resulting in him hitting the wall pretty hard. It still would have been a difficult catch if he got a good read/good jump on it.
  22. Considering Ceda hasn't pitched this year due to shoulder surgery, I'm okay with who we traded to get Gregg.
  23. It seems like his walks have dropped a bit recently as well. Is that true, or am I making things up? Last 10 Games
