  1. That was amusingly close.
  2. The illegal substitution penalty made it academic.
  3. Nice INT by Arkansas. Wow.
  4. My big sleeper next season is OF Delbis Arcila. I'm really intrigued with him, considering he's a 6'3 190 lb left handed hitter at 17 years old who had a pretty good run in the DSL this year.
  5. I forgot the Rockies drafted and signed Russell Wilson. That should add some interest to the upcoming NC State/Clemson game, considering the Rockies also signed Kyle Parker.
  6. Perhaps, but maybe he prefers being in the booth? Frankly, I'm hoping he returns in that capacity next season.
  7. Fecal League standings have been updated. If the season were to end today, the Cubs would be picking at #9 (instead of #8 due to the Diamondbacks having a compensation pick at #7 for not signing Barret Loux). Barring a late season miracle, the Cubs will likely be staying in that spot.
  8. *Looks up briefly from newspaper, shrugs, goes back to doing the crossword*
  9. Link Bit of an old article, but the Cy Young discussions are starting up. Felix Hernandez is having an excellent year. However, thanks to the fact that Felix has 16 losses or no-decisions in games where he's given up 3 or fewer runs, he's sporting a 12-11 record. He's really likely to lose out to 20 game winner CC Sabathia for the AL Cy Young...despite the fact that Hernandez has out-performed Sabathia in every other meaningful metric.
  10. And Jin-Yeong Kim. +1 There are a bunch of interesting guys from the DSL in instructs, to boot. I'm looking forward to seeing what AZ Phil has to say about guys like Zapata, Hernandez, Amaya, et al.
  11. Callis' weekly chat: Side note: Ugh.
  12. As mentioned in the chat, this year is pretty much a down year for the AZL. Reed was pretty much a given, despite my attempts at playing devil's advocate elsewhere for ranking Chen over him. Although, the fact that the top players with the AZL Cubs were Reed, Chen, Liria, and Beeler seems pretty underwhelming. I'm reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally curious to see how they rank the NWL for the Cubs.
  13. 9th. The Diamondbacks have a compensation pick at #7 for not signing Barret Loux.
  14. In a strong draft. :banghead: Don't worry, at least one of the top-rated players in the draft will fall into the Cubs' laps because of signability reasons. Granted, the Cubs won't take him, but still!
  15. Or, gasp, TWO BLOCKS AWAY!?!?!?!!!! THINK OF THE SENSITIVITY TO DMB FANS!!!!!!
  16. Apparently birch bats have started to come into vogue. I have to wonder how they stack up to maple and ash. Al Yellon has been banging the drum to get MLB to take action on this. I doubt it'll go anywhere, but maybe we'll see some changes next year.
  17. The media, of course, is making a huge deal over this. Would've been nice if Yunel Escobar had gotten that kind of scrutiny when he did it to the Cubs last season Lance Berkman, imo
  18. Box Score Tennessee lost 1-0 Box Score (Tennessee eliminated 3-1 in best of five championship series) CF T. Campana 0/3, BB, CS (3) RF B. Jackson 0/3, BB, 2 K LF B. Guyer 2/4, K C R. Sommer .2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1/0 K/BB, HR
  19. McNutt had a quality start: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR Tennessee's down 2-0 in the 7th.
  20. In Zambrano's latest start, MLB Game Day had him working around 88-91 with his fb, topping out at 93. I find it kind of weird that people are concerned about Z's velocity considering how much flak Z used to get for overthrowing everything and not taking something off his pitches in order to get better movement. It could be that overuse finally took a toll on his arm and sapped him of some velocity...but perhaps Zambrano finally listened to his critics and altered his pitches accordingly?
  21. Nah, it'll be in 2013 when the Cubs' Chris Carpenter out-duels the Cards' Chris Carpenter to clinch the sweep. :D
  22. Box Score Tennessee lost 2-0 Box Score (Tennessee trails 2-1 in best of five series) CF T. Campana 0/4 LF B. Guyer 0/3, BB 3B R. Canzler 0/4, 2 K RF M. Spencer 0/4, K 2B T. Thomas 0/3, K C S. 23. Box Score from the last time they did it. Crappy season, but I'm enjoying the little things.
  24. It's going to take quite a bit of work to turn this team into a regular 90 game winner (which is what they should be), but it really shouldn't take all that much investment to make them a contender in 2011. It's still the NL Central, where an 84 win pace is good enough for 2nd this year and none of the competition is elite. 80-something win seasons win this division as often as 90+ win seasons. That's pretty much the way I see this team. Turning the Cubs into consistent 90+ game winners would require young players under team control for a number of years, a top-level farm system that can fill holes on the major league roster through call ups and trades, and the available resources to sign big name free agents as they become available. Frankly, I think the Cubs would need at least two years to get to that point. However, given the current roster, I don't think it would take much to get this team over .500 next season. A good quality bat at 1B or RF, a 6th/7th inning setup man, and a #4/#5 starter (along with jettisoning Silva) would get the Cubs close to that. With bounce-back years from A-Ram and Z, continuing development of young players, and some lucky breaks, 85-88 wins wouldn't be out of the question.
