  1. Another possibility could be that the Cubs view Nady as being easier to trade than Fukudome. If Nady is fully recovered from TJS, hitting the ball well, and doing a good enough job in the field, he could be enormously helpful for a contender looking for a bench upgrade. There's something to be said for that, especially since the playoff roster deadline is coming up in a few days. Then again, moving Colvin to 1B and having a Nady/Fukudome platoon in RF next season might not be the worst idea in the world if the Cubs can't find anyone worthwhile in free agency.

  5. I changed the title to make this thread more relevant. http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/3305/pujols.jpg So, how will this medal affect Albert's chances of winning NL MVP?
  6. Except younger and better. It seems weird saying this, but I like him better than anyone currently on Boise's roster. That fastball/curve combination is flat-out devastating. I could see the Cubs trying him out as a starter if the control problems have been ironed out, but if he stays in relief, he has the ability to make his stay in the minors a short one.

  8. He started out the year in dominating fashion, moved to the pen briefly, moved back, struggled pretty badly...then he just kind of leveled off at slightly above average. It's hard to tell whether Jackson's struggles would have happened regardless of his move to the pen, especially considering last season he pitched 127 innings and this season he might end up over the 175 IP mark, depending on Iowa's playoff status and whether the Cubs ship him off to the AFL. His body might not be used to pitching this much. He's had an odd year. His control has improved substantially, but the Ks are way down and the HRs are way the hell up. His numbers adjusted for park and luck suggest he's been the victim of bandboxes and bad luck...but those adjusted numbers are still pretty underwhelming.
  9. FIP by inning according to Minor League Splits: 1st - 3.66 2nd - 4.71 3rd - 3.53 4th - 4.28 5th - 7.04 6th - 6.38 7th - 6.66 8th - 2.35 9th - 4.16
  10. He's not a scout by trade, so take what he says with a grain of salt. Still, he's been a useful source of information and tends to have a good read on pitchers.
  11. That's almost better than the Nippon Ham Fighters.
  12. For whatever reason, Boise decided to have Cam Greathouse pinch hit tonight. Hopefully they're not going to re-enact the Chris Huseby experiment with him.

  15. It'd be delightful if Castro won the batting title at the expense of Pujols or Votto getting a triple crown.
  16. Whoops, forgot Gibbs. He's actually been doing better recently, so I'm not all too concerned with him. Still, it's a pretty underwhelming year in short season ball.
  17. Alvaro Ramirez and Richard Jones both couldn't stick in Peoria earlier this season. Also, Ramirez is 24 and much too old relative to the league. At 22, Jones is a bit more age-appropriate, but he needs to prove he can handle a higher level of competition before being talked about as a serious prospect. Here's Pierre LePage's draft profile from this year's draft: LePage has pretty much fit the bill in Boise. His ceiling seems to be a backup 2B. Here's Szczur's draft profile from this year: Szczur displayed excellent speed to go with a high contact approach in his short stints with Boise and Peoria (he's back at Villanova now playing football and has a $500,000 bonus waiting for him if he commits to baseball). He'll probably make a handful of Top 20 lists for the Cubs, as his athleticism offers an intriguing ceiling. He didn't display much power, but committing to baseball full-time could really help his game flourish. As for other position prospects with Boise, there are two particularly intriguing names on the roster. IF Arismendy Alcantara is a switch hitting 18 year old Dominican SS who has hit reasonably well (.268/.304/.392). Some posters think he'll crack the Top 20 for the league...but I'm waiting for reports on him to come out. There could be something there with him, but it's hard to tell just based on the numbers. The other name worth knowing is OF Kyung-Min Na. Another 18 year old on the team, he got a big six figure bonus signing from the Cubs last year. He hasn't done much with the bat, but from what I've read, he's a speedy guy who plays good defense. It's a bit hard to tell where his ceiling is since I've seen him listed as 5'6 and the Hawks' website lists him as 5'10. As for pitchers currently on the roster...egh. Austin Kirk and Juan Yasser Serrano are no longer on the team (Kirk promoted, Serrano demoted). LHP Cameron Greathouse and LHP Brent Ebinger have both put up good K/BB numbers, although I haven't seen any reports on their stuff. The guy I really like is RHP Aaron Kurcz, Boise's closer. He has two plus pitches and could be a setup man/closer in the majors.

  19. Luke Sommer got bumped up to Iowa.
  20. Pretty much the latter. As memory serves me, in these sorts of situations, the only recourse available has to be done on the part of the State of Florida. All the voters can do is vote the officials responsible for this out of office. Although, it would be delightful to see criminal investigations opened into Jeffrey Loria's dealings and affairs.
  21. There's a potential issue with the line of thinking that moving Colvin to 1B could work for this team. Namely, it's offensive production... Link MLB RFs in 2010: .270/.342/.444/.785 MLB 1Bs in 2010: .268/.353/.457/.810 Colvin sports a .255/.314/.513/.827 line. Given the choice between moving him to 1B and finding a replacement in RF (Keep Fukudome/Nady as a platoon? Sign or trade for a random FA?) and keeping Colvin in RF while finding a replacement 1B, there's a better chance of upgrading this team offensively in trying to find a replacement 1B, even if it's just an "average" bat. That bat will likely be close to Colvin's production this year, given the averages. Although, there might be something to be said for a Nady/Fukudome platoon if Nady's finally healthy and his production in the second half is for real. Hm...
  22. Jeremy Papelbon got the start for Tennessee.

  24. Why exactly are some people so sure the Cubs are going to get Adrian Gonzalez next offseason?
  25. Just hope he does not get fired, I actually enjoy Harold Reynolds as an analyst. As long as they keep him as far away from the MLB Draft as possible, they can do whatever they want with him. MLBN's coverage of the MLB Draft is even worse than ESPN's coverage of the third day of the NFL Draft.
