Ryno and Bowa for Dejesus. Derek Lee for Hee Seop Choi wasn' too bad. Aramis Ramirez & Kenny Lofton for Bobby Hill Aramis was interesting. He had already had roughly a full seasons worth of ABs (spread over 3 seasons) before his breakout year in 2001. His line in those first 3 seasons was .239/.290/.364/.654 which is pretty bad but those were his age 20-22 seasons. Then in 2001 he had a 122 OPS+ and looked to be breaking out only to completely regress in 2002 with a 72 OPS+. I seem to remember something about him playing through an injury. He had a partial bounce back for the Pirates in 2003 before the Cubs got him in July. Bobby Hill was a top 50 prospect that we were all excited about but to me seemed more like a high floor low ceiling at a premium defensive position kind of guy. I know some here were very excited but I was very meh. Mentioning this because I can sort of understand why the Pirates were ok giving up Aramis thinking his 2001 was maybe more the outlier than the parts of 5 seasons where he sucked. He had a high upside but a risk to hit that upside. They get a top 50 prospect in return. The Cubs fill their major 3B hole and if his 2003 is a return to 2001 form they have him under control for 3.5 seasons. From the Pirates perspective, I would have held firm at Aramis for Hill. Lofton probably could have gone in a separate trade and they'd have gotten more value for him, and they had no need at all for Jose Hernandez...didn't understand that one. But yeah, Hill turned out to be a AAAA player, Aramis quite suddenly developed into a high end middle of the order hitter, Lofton was a major factor in the Cubs playoff run, Jose Hernandez played baseball I guess, I don't really remember his career after his 2nd Cubs stint. Disastrous trade for the Pirates who sucked for another decade before their brief run of relevance.
