  1. But what's the alternative? You really think mystery injury/OPSing like .300 in the last month KB is going to bring back some future difference maker for a couple months of games? What contender is looking for a shortstop hitting league average and on pace for a career high in errors? These are unique players in that they have a track record of high performance, enough to garner a somewhat substantial contract (and a comp pick) who don't have a whole lot of trade value when getting acquired just for the next 3 months. You do a fire sale in the next month, you forfeit whatever chance you have left this year, and you set the table for Ricketts to roll out some big rebuild until the 15 year olds from the Darvish trade hit puberty. That's....better than taking a shot, even a long shot, at backing into a coin flip playoff? If these guys all actually suck, we're going to suck next year regardless. Tossing away the rest of this season for a few prospects that can maybe crack our top 20 is even dumber. Look, I'm Mr. Doom Boner: I think the Cubs have thoroughly horsefeathers themselves to the point that there's no real good option for them right now. It’s honestly impressive how thoroughly the Cubs have fucked themselves. On one hand it’s super depressing but on the other hand, bravo
  2. Shockingly losing a game after scoring 7 runs in the first is more common than I thought but still pretty damn rare. Teams that score 7+ runs in the first inning of a game are 626-26-1 all time (or at least in all games where they have line scores which is mostly everything after 1930). Just last year the Phillies lost after scoring 7: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TOR/TOR202008202.shtml Also in my search I found that the most runs a team has ever scored in the first inning and lost is 10 runs, and it happened twice
  3. Right. I’m not ready to give up the season yet. This is a team that recently lost 5 straight including 2 to the Rockies. That said the margin for error is much more narrow now
  4. I think i said this last night but the thing that really pisses me off is I came into the season with very low expectations, was not terribly mad when the team started slow, when they started winning I enjoyed it for what it was, a mediocre team going on a hot streak. I think around that point in the Cardinals series where the Cubs came back from down 5-1 to win by a couple of runs I thought 'damn I guess this team is somehow pretty decent'. I let my guard down and now they are playing like the team I expected before the season but its pissing me off a lot more because my expectations rose. Now they are probably going to be just good enough to not completely sell all their assets so it will end up being a worse case scenario I guess.
  5. The Brewers have scored 31 runs so far in the series. Not including today, the Cubs have scored 31 runs in their last 13 games combined. The Brewers have 3 innings of 5+ runs scored in this series. In the Cubs previous 16 games, they have scored 5 or more runs in the entire game just once.
  6. Reminds me of this game in 2004: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200407200.shtml Cubs were thought to be contenders in 2004, but were struggling coming off a 3-8 stretch and playing the 1st place team trying to stay afloat in the division. In this game, the Cubs scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning and it felt like ok at least we'll get this one and get some momentum back. Instead Pujols hit 3 HRs and the Cubs lost 11-8
  7. Speaking of lists of teams, I'd love to see the record of teams that score 7+ runs in the first inning of a game. Has to be something like 546-4 or something.
  8. Only if you also compile a list of teams that failed to overcome 6 game deficits with half the season to go. Even at full strength and firing on all cylinders, this is a seriously flawed team. The offense and bullpen might be good enough to carry them into the playoffs in a weak division, but that's about the extent of it. No doubt about it. My point was that the season isn't over if the Cubs fall back 6 games on July 1. It's not great but this is not a must win game. The Cubs are a very flawed team, but also have just finished an impossible portion of their schedule (21 of 29 games on the road, all of the road games against current playoff teams) during a stretch where they've had several key injuries (Hoerner, Duffy, Bote, now Rizzo, Bryant banged up, Trevor Williams, Alzolay, etc). If those guys come back soon, they will be rewarded with the easiest remaining schedule in baseball with a disproportionate number of games at home where they are 26-13 this year. To your other point, does it matter if they win the central since they clearly aren't a legit contender? I guess...the other option is rooting for them to be bad enough to sell and that sounds less fun though more prudent.
  9. This is going to be one of those games where the first couple of innings are zany, and then no one scores until someone on the Brewers hits a walkoff in the bottom of the 9th
  10. Shall I compile a list of teams that have overcome 6 game deficits with half the season to go? I mean I'm not saying the Cubs are a good team primed to crawl back to the division lead, but 6 games over 81 games with the easiest remaining schedule in baseball is not as daunting as you seem to be implying it is.
  11. wow, wasn't going to pay attention but checked the score on a whim, what a disaster. At least they're still winning?
  12. I'd kill for Paul Bako's career .623 OPS these days. Even better, is Hank White still a coach on the cubs? Just throw him on the active roster and see what happens.
  13. Toews gives some detail about the illness that kept him out last year and his plans to return next year: "hey guys look over here, this is definitely what you should be talking about with regards to the blackhawks"
  14. The thing about the Cubs that pisses me off is that I refused to completely buy in when they were doing well thinking that they can’t possibly be a legit good team. But when they finished off that hot stretch by sweeping the Cardinals I started to believe this might be legit. 4-11 in that point and have scored exactly 4 runs in those 15 games* Ok probably more than 4 runs but it feels like only 4
  15. Game on the line for Lobaton. Great stuff
  16. Not sure, last I heard he was about to start a rehab assignment. It’s pretty sad that I’m pining for Matt horsefeathering Duffy to return
  17. I spent the first few weeks saying “meh kyle always has a streak somewhat similar to this every year” but at this point my mind goes to “maybe the cubs failed at developing kyle”. Then I remember when they tried to turn Heyward into a power hitter and instead he fell apart on offense and when they tried to make Starlin walk more and turned him into one of the worst hitters in baseball for a couple years. (Yes they’ve also developed solid hitters but screw it im feeling negative right now)
  18. I almost relish the fact that the semis and finals are at Wembley, assuming England advances, making it that much more painful when they lose.
  19. The Cubs scored the 2nd most runs that they’ve scored in their last 15 games tonight and still lost by 10 runs
  20. Last Monday the Cubs completed a 6 game stretch where they scored 10 total runs. Tonight the Brewers scored 10 runs in an inning against the Cubs.
  21. So wait, the inning started tied and ended with a position player getting the 3rd out? That’s hilarious
  22. Is it a safe assumption he was using some tiky tak? I mean he had a 21 inning or something scoreless streak and then immediately after the ban starts he has given up 7 ER in 3 IP. Could be overuse too but that’s quite the coincidence. I mean all that pub about the Cubs magical pitch lab that focused on identifying guys with spin rate managed to turn scrap heap guys into elite bullpen arms. Nance is suspicious too - 5.2 IP, 6 ER since the ban. Others have held up well so maybe it is just the fact that pitchers occasionally give up runs and struggle
  23. Would sure be nice to have guys like Rizzo, Contreras, Hoerner, Duffy or heck even Bote to bat in those situations instead of Loboton and Ortega. I know Loboton walked but still
  24. I just realized how shocking it is when the ball actually gets put in play in those situations. I’m just so hard wired to expect a strikeout
