  1. Germany-.Costa Rica is starting out like Poland-Argentina. I have not been able to confirm that there is actually another half of the field.
  2. Winner of Big 10 SEC ACC PAC 10 Big 12 Wildcard Team not from any of the above conferences (The ND rule) That should be the playoff. 12 is way too many teams. It's a money grab. Alternatively, make a league out of the teams that make up those conferences (plus ND) and have a six-team playoff at the end of the season. See one of the things I really love about expanded playoffs is that it guarantees that a G5 team gets into the playoffs. This does something that has never happened before in college football - every team conceivably has a chance to win a championship. Always bugged me that 75% of college football teams had 0 chance of winning a title entering every year. Sure we will almost certainly never see a Sun Belt team win a national championship, but they have a route now. In your proposal, this technically is true too but 90% of the time its going to be Notre Dame.
  3. Gotta admit that while I’m still a big playoff expansion supporter I can see how being part of the haves motivates you to argue in favor of keeping the 4 team model
  4. Weird, I read it was the Big Ten angling to get PSU to the Rose Bowl since it would be the 3rd time in 5 years that OSU made it and the 2 most obvious opponents are the 2 teams they played recently. Also OSU only sold like 13k of their 20k ticket allotment last year. Apparently not a lot of enthusiasm to go to the Rose Bowl after you get your butt kicked out of the CFP by Michigan. If OSU was pushing it, I bet they’d rather go to the Orange Bowl and play Clemson given their recent CFP matchups. But Woody Hayes would he turning in his grave if he knew OSU was trying to avoid going to the Rose Bowl
  5. Technically Costa Rica can qualify with a draw, as long as Spain loses by 14 goals :D If Costa Rica draws they move on if Spain wins too. True, but that scenario is not as funny because it doesn't involve Spain losing by 14 goals.

  7. I think you're confusing Australia and New Zealand, Australia is definitely in AFC and went through their qualifying. No, I get it, they qualify via AFC but they are still located in Oceania, so I hesitate to call them an Asian team. Got it...I thought you were listing them by confederation since you broke the others down by confederation
  8. Sucks but I'll be thrilled if we can get by the Dutch and reach the quarters again. Good momentum heading into the 2026 cycle.
  9. Australia is in AFC now
  10. Incredible drama. Love moments like that where there are so many scenarios you have to calculate in real time to figure out what happens if another goal is scored. Was a bit annoyed that the announcers were not on top of those scenarios. For a good 10 minutes they kept saying Mexico was through because they had more goals scored which was not at all the case. They they realized it came down to fair play but it took them another 5 minutes to know where the yellow cards for both teams stood. Then when Saudi Arabia scored Ian Darke acted like it eliminated Mexico when it literally did not change anything regarding what Mexico needed to do to advance. I guess its easier when you are sitting watching at home to figure it out, but you'd think the announcers would be prepped ahead of time for a completely plausible 2-0 ARG, 2-0 MEX result. Anyways, my 88 year old grandfather was born in Poland and moved to the States after living in a German work camp during WW2. Got him all psyched up when I told him the Poland games were going to be on Fox over the air (has never had cable). Just talked to him and while he was disgusted at how bad they looked was absolutely thrilled that Poland advanced. Put a smile on my face to hear him so happy.
  11. 2-0 Argentina. Poland clinging to fair play now
  12. hot take
  13. 2-0 Mexico. Not looking good for Poland but they are still up +1 in GD and win the tiebreaker unless Mexico scores 3
  14. And now Mexico scores (finally). Poland still up +2 on GD If Mexico and Argentina both get another goal and win 2-0, Poland/Mexico tiebreakers will come down to fair play. Mexico has 7 yellows vs. 4 for Poland (no reds)
  15. Argentina gets on the board. Poland now desperately hopes the Saudi's don't score
  16. This is like stoppage time on Iran/USA but for the entire 90 minutes and 10x more intense.
  17. Ball don't lie
  18. Some news on Leatherwood:
  19. TT’s recs are good. Grant Wahl has also been doing great stuff on his substack. Backheeled.com - USS content Brian Phillips (the ringer) - the best soccer writer https://www.theringer.com/world-cup/2022/11/29/23484981/usa-iran-world-cup-game-analysis-reaction-round-of-16 Additional content to check out: Scuffed Podcast - the best USS podcast Total soccer show - the other best USS podcast US Soccer YouTube channel - behind the crest Cooligans podcast - the one actually funny soccer podcast I really enjoy In Soccer We Trust with Jimmy Conrad, Heath Pearce and Charlie Davies. They get some real good guests, aren't afraid to criticize when necessary, and obviously have the perspective of guys who have been there and done that Not sure how people feel about Men In Blazers, but they've been doing a 6 part series with the actor who plays Coach Beard in Ted Lasso covering the history of the USMNT which I enjoyed. Brought back memories and reminded me of things I forgot or didn't know about at the time. The sub-series is called Go! Go! USA, but its part of the main Men In Blazers podcast.
  20. Love the enthusiasm
  21. Coming back to this, my guess it's a combo of: - Gio is not 100%, and he's a teenager* who's played 800 club minutes in the last 18 months so he's being kept on a strict leash - Gio is not a vertical threat(especially given the injury risk), so he doesn't help the team as much in certain game states - Gregg doesn't rate Gio's defensive work as highly as others, which means he doesn't rank as highly as other options in certain other game states - Gio is not a clean fit at any position in the US formation, he's not a pure winger in the way that Pulisic, Weah, or Morris are(and Aaronson can be), and he's not enough of an engine room guy to be one of the 8s(which Aaronson only gets away with due to his 80 grade work rate) *he turned 20 two weeks ago All good points but I guess I figured one of the most skilled playmakers on the team would find more than 10 minutes of playing time in group stage. Maybe he's a better fit as a sub in knockout stages when Gregg should be less conservative with draws not being a consideration. I'd hope if the US was chasing a goal in the 70th minute of a knockout match he'd find a way to get Gio's skillset in there.
  22. What does this mean? That the US dominated the chances in this game. Someone else can explain it better but it basically measures quality of chances in a match. If someone drills one from outside of the box for a goal, the xG for that will be low because its a low probability chance. If someone Wondo's it, the xG will be much higher despite not scoring. The US had better chances while Iran's were mostly lower quality. edit: what abmillis said
