  1. He had solid numbers last year and finished the last 2 months very strong. I can’t remember his contract but I don’t think he was ridiculously expensive. So I get why the Cubs would be interested in bringing him back, especially with Hendricks not being ready to start the season and young guys like Steele and Wesneski not fully established yet. But looking at his career numbers it was far from a sure bet that he’d be a solid starter (and of course only 1 regular season start so can’t draw conclusions quite yet)
  2. This doesn’t really prove that you were predicting another gut rebuild in 2012. You (admittedly astutely) recognized our lack of player development success in 2015, but that’s with 3 years of data. Predicting that one gut rebuild portends another future gut rebuild a decade later on the day Theo took over after a history of leading a team that was sustainably successful is quite a bit different. theo outlined his plan from day 1. Focus on player development, try to win every year but dont sacrifice the future for the present, etc Of course he failed on all 3 of those goals but there was no reason to believe he was being disingenuous back in 2012, except maybe the 3rd point.
  3. Because of his spring, or the fact that the his solid numbers last year were a little flukey?
  4. Seems like all Chicago sports seasons lately (tuning out within a month or so after the season starts)
  5. Good fake rally, inches from tying the game
  6. Wrist looked good on that swing by Wisdom
  7. Nico, Swanson and Happ part of the order has passed. Do we even have to play the 9th now?
  8. If they tried to move Torrens to catcher and chose to pinch hit any sort of hitter with a pulse there, they would have lost the DH right?
  9. And then can't make him the catcher because you lose the DH (I think) so you're forced to have Gomes strike out pathetically on 3 pitches. Definitely some holes on this team. Or the manager just sucks. Or both
  10. The fact that Gomes is our pinch hitter in the biggest spot of the game.... (I realize they just burned Torrens before this but still)
  11. If we don't reuse themes were going to be doing Major Dad themed game threads in early October
  12. Sadly if there's an opportunity to do something shitty, the Cubs will shamelessly do it.
  13. Yay we tied it....was getting ready to post about not getting a runner home from 3rd with 0 outs.
  14. Surely just a stopgap until Mervis is deemed ready right? Not sure what service time looks like these days
  15. You can’t waste a rare catcher hit dammit!
  16. It’s early but Smyly is making a great case for being the person who is moved out of the rotation when Hendricks returns
  17. 1 ALDS win, 1 AL WC win in 2020. Definitely the cautionary tale for gut rebuilds. The funny thing is that at least a small part of Hahn deciding to blow it up had to be the Cubs success with our gut rebuild that was peaking in 2016.
  18. Sorry, I see what your saying but I don't see how that guarantees another rebuild in a decade. If the player development system worked as he promised, there would be no need for another rebuild. That was his major focus and he failed in that regard but I don't think it was for lack of effort.
  19. How did you know this back in 2012? Theo had come from a 9 year run of sustained success in Boston with strong player development, so its not like it was history repeating itself. I don't think people realized there was a major development problem outside of 1st round picks until like 2017. I'm just not sure how you could be certain that there was going to be a second rebuild all the way back in 2012 when we just hired an elite GM and still had hopes that the ownership group would spend aggressively.
