All fair points. If I better understood where the Cubs were in salary obligations for 2024 and how adding $16m for Hendricks would affect that I might have a different opinion. I do think the Cubs will go over the tax next year but not sure how much. If they don't pick up Hendricks' option they'll likely have to find another starter in FA. They may not have to shop in the $16mil a year market for that starter but if they did, they might end up with a better pitcher, or they may end up with Taillon part 2 for the next 4-5 years instead of a 1 year commitment from Hendricks.
I do like the thought of Hendricks possibly working something out for a 2 year deal that will give him less AAV but allow him to stay in Chicago where he seems very comfortable. I'd consider Hendricks at 2/$24 or something like that
