  1. Castro is in the game as a pinch runner. Good news is that he's surely gonna get an AB.
  2. C, 1B, LF, and CF have been replaced for the NL so far. Given that the NL has only 2 healthy SSs on the roster, I'd expect Starlin to come in for the 6th or 7th.
  3. I didn't see a thread for the ASG so here goes. Starlin looked spiffy whilst getting introduced.
  4. The funny thing is, that was only the Cubs reserves (and an injured Soriano). Fukudome and Soto (and Lou) were not in the picture.
  5. Yeah he definitely earned himself an opening night roster spot unless he just completely sucks in training camp/preseason.
  6. Same. Except even in their money situation, I don't think the Rays even consider that offer seriously. Maybe Starlin, Cashner, Brett Jackson, interesting lower regarded prospect for Longoria and Price. Even then I have a hard time saying no to that.
  7. Yeah that's what's silly about this. The best players aren't really deciding this. There are 84 "All Stars" this year and people that are around the 70-84 range are going to be the ones playing in the late innings, deciding who gets HFA. So when Hunter Pence of the 30-62 Astros gets a GW single off of Gio Gonzalez of the 39-53 Astros, the Phillies can breathe easy knowing that Game 1 of the World Series would be at Citizens Bank Park.
  8. The Cubs are typically among the more aggressive teams in promoting their players, as well. That also plays into those results. Well lets look at the "home grown" players on the 40 man Cubs roster. (aka players who spent at least a season or two of time in the Cubs minor league system) Soto - Above average discipline Barney - Below average discipline Castro - Below average discipline Campana - meh, slightly below average based on minor league numbers Colvin - Below average discipline LeMahieu - slightly below average based on minors Montaniez - average discipline I think its pretty hard to deny that the Cubs system doesn't produce a lot of patient hitters, but as to why this is the case, there are probably a lot of reasons.
  9. What do you guys think? Would you root for this team? Would it work? I think it would work better in the 'Burbs. Seriously, they'd sell out every single game. I personally think it could work somewhere near Naperville/Aurora/Joilet. There is a pretty nice chunk of population there, and the towns are established enough and far enough away from Chicago to identify with the team as their hometown team over the Bulls. Might not get them to switch loyalties over the Bulls right away, but people will still goto the games, and in a generation or two, the fan base will solidify. 2 Chicago teams would become a civil war. I get the feeling that the Clippers/Lakers rivalry is very mild (correct me if I'm wrong) and the Knicks/Nets rivalry is only recently starting to be very relevant.
  10. Stalberg is the Shawon Dunston of Hockey- has skills and sometimes shows them but is never as good as he should be. I was a sucker for Dunston, so I'm pulling for Stalberg. With Stalberg in the fold, hopefully that's another foot out the door for Scott. I always considered Buff the Dunston of hockey.
  11. I say we spend it on upgrading the Wrigley Field bathrooms and to build a Krispy Kreme in the Wrigley front office so that hopefully we can convince Jim Hendry not to bolt for another team.
  12. and the thing about the Pirates is that for the most part its not a bunch of young prospects from a decade of rebuilding that is giving them their improvement. It's minor free agent signings (Corriea) and lightly regarded young players acquired through traded (Morton, McDonald) that have led them to this "revival" (that and a bit of luck due to a fortunate run differential and a weak NL Central). Most of the younger prospects they expected to be pretty big factors for a contending Pirates team (Alvaraz, Tabata, Walker) have if anything disapointed. So year, its not overly likely the Cubs can turn it around next year without major FA acquisitions, but its not at all unheard of.
  13. http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/coaches/rulessmallgames.asp Pretty much every youth soccer organization in the US uses these rules and guidelines. Basically, for anyone 8 years old and up, they conform to FIFA rules for calling fouls/giving out cards. For anyone below 8 years old, there are no cards given out for misconduct.
  14. MFer Windermere Nice, I was always a midfielder since I was also a runner and played Leftoutside MF in high school. I always made the joke that I was playing Left-out and had to explain that it was an actual position. Awesome But you're all being trolled I'm sure
  15. OK so you brought it up and people discussed it for a bit and then we moved on to another equally relevant topic :)
  16. Yup, I believe so, which is probably the reason that Sabathia was added even though they knew he was going to pitch seconds later on Sunday and have to replace him with someone else. I think that was the stupidest thing of this whole mess. If that's the case Aramis should have accepted the nod and then immediately said "oww i am hurt, i cant play"
  17. Then bring it up. The topic is 2011 All Star Game. This is a catch all thread. "I've never heard of this dude before" and "wow everyone is dropping out" can both be acceptable conversations.
  18. stones, glass houses, etc Not sure what the comparison is. Yeah, that's a bad example... but I'm sure I have done similar things in the past anyway. But it is kind of ridiculous to derail a whole thread the way this one has gone. How has it been that derailed? I don't really get anyone thinking they are better than anyone else because they know who Tyler Clippard is, just that they are surprised that the one poster hadn't heard of him.
  19. Is THAT Tyler Clippard?
  20. Tyler Clippard I definitely heard of. Aaron Crow and David Robertson on the other hand, were new to me. A couple of other AL guys I had heard in passing, like I heard Alexi Ogando was doing well to start the year for Texas, but I never imagined he'd be an All Star this year. Same with Michael Pineda. Just a lot of unfamiliar names on both rosters for the casual fans tuning in. I would guess most casual fans haven't heard of or aren't very familiar with: Crow, Robertson, Ogando, Pineda, Walden, Avila, Gio Gonzalez, League, Chris Perez, Romero, Joyce, Clippard, Hanrahan, Kimbrel, Venters, Vogelsong, Montero, Castro. There's nothing at all wrong with that. It's great that the young potential stars are getting exposure to the casual fan. It's just a lot of casual fans are going to wonder who the heck these guys are and where are players like Pujols, Wright, Santana, Hanley, etc are.
  21. This. Meh, being labeled an all star in 2011 might have gotten him a few extra $'s on his next contract.
  22. Wow the new AL starting pitchers look odd SP Josh Beckett SP Gio Gonzalez SP Alexi Ogando (replacing CC Sabathia) SP Michael Pineda (replacing Justin Verlander) SP Ricky Romero (replacing Jon Lester) SP C.J. Wilson
  23. If a player misses the all star game due to injury, the player must miss at least 2 consecutive games following the all star game (waived if they missed the last 2 games before the all star game) Just a thought.
  24. Man that sucks. I understand he'd probably been planning on going home to see his family for awhile, but cmon man you won't get many more chances to be an all star in your career. He should have gone.
  25. Yeah why do you care so much? I'm not saying its not cool to follow the team when its this bad, but getting upset over individual games in a lost season seems rather pointless in the grand scheme of things.
