Personally, I'd fire Quade. Me too, not sure what WSR is thinking. Jason Frasor isn't even that good. And we all know PTBNL's almost never amount to anything.

I'm ok with keeping Aramis if you can promise me 2 things: 1) He won't leave for nothing this season (if he opts out) or next. I'm assuming that due to his awful year last year, he has a chance to be a Type B FA if he opts out this year. 2) We don't give him more than 2 years for his next deal. The last thing we need is another broken down position player with an untradable contract.

Wait, really? I don't remember that at all being like Aramis this year. Aramis was pretty decent from the start, but just wasn't hitting for much power until about a couple months into the season. Lee was completely wretched in April and then went nuts after that for the rest of the season. I guess I remembered incorrectly. Maybe I just dwelled on his lack of power and considered him enroute to being washed up and made the connection to Lee's 2009.

Aramis' year so far reminds me of 2009 Derrick Lee. He started off the season horribly, a year after a subpar season. People start to think he's finished and then all the sudden, he just starts raking it and ends up with great numbers.

Although I always believed in the value of patience and drawing walks, watching the 2008 Cubs really hammered that into my head. It was amazing watching that team go up against tough pitchers and make them work, throwing 90 pitches in 5 innings, and even if they didn't score a lot, they were able to get the pitcher out after 6 innings and feast on their middle relief. How many innings did we have in games where the Cubs just weren't hitting the ball well, and were able to draw a couple of walks and then next thing you know you have a 3 run inning? The difference in hitting approach between 2008 and now is night and day. This is a horrible and rather awkward analogy, but people who use ecstacy say to never have sex on it because you'll never enjoy sober sex again. That's what the 2008 Cubs have done to me. I just can't enjoy watching the Cubs offense when it's hacking away and has to rely on 3 hits to score a single run, when I have seen what a truely productive offense can do.

The problem with the Cubs is that they have a generations long history of never rolling a 7. Here's the complete list of Cubs draft picks (who actually signed with the team) with at least a 5.0 Career WAR since 1990: Doug Glanville Steve Trachsel Kerry Wood Justin Speier Kyle Loshe Jon Garland Scott Downs Corey Patterson Eric Hinske Dontrelle Willis Mark Prior Ryan Theriot Ricky Nolasco Geovany Soto Randy Wells Sean Marshall We should be seeing the "fruits" of the 2004-2006 drafts right now, but there's just no one there. Colvin and Samardjiza are the only two from those three drafts on our major league roster in 2011. I suspect that the issue is not necessarily who they've drafted, but how they develop the players after they draft them. Regardless, the Cubs sheer inability or refusal to produce players out of their system is beyond frustrating. Is there a source for that? Just curious, I want to look up other teams if that's possible. -

Check out these splits: .231/.271/.409/.680 against right handed pitching .333/.380/.606/.986 against lefties (only 66 ABs though) He had similar splits last year (.944 against lefties, .764 against righties) Also, remember the awful year Sori had in 2009 when everyone said he was playing really hurt and it was effecting his hitting (not saying it is or isn't true). His line that year was .241/.303/.423/.726. He's definitely approaching that range this year.

They aren't even going to begin to talk seriously until maybe September and even then it's going to be about what side blinks first. I have read too many quotes from both sides about how they are resigned to the fact that part or all of the season is going to be missed to think they can get anything done by November. Obviously part of that is posturing, but based on how little news there is right now, combined with how far apart the two sides are right now, I would be absolutely shocked if the season started on time. At best, I think we get a half year, unless the players, who supposedly have been saving all last year to prepare for an extended lockout, aren't as prepared as advertised and are forced to settle to start getting paychecks again.

Article about the Pirates follies of the last 18 years on Grantland. Was the 2003 Rule 5 draft story common knowledge? (basically 5 of the first 6 picks of that draft were used on Pirates players. We could do a lot worse than Montador-Lepisto for the last D pairing. I think you have those nailed, with O'Donnell as the 7th. I also agree on Kruger. I'd be shocked if he doesn't crack the opening roster on the one hand. But on the other, which of those 12 sits? The easy answer is Mayers, but he serves a purpose, regardless of whether or not some of you think it's a valid one. This is why they need to buy out Olesz. They already have too many forwards. This reminds me of managing my fantasy baseball team. I have a whole bunch of guys who if I dropped any would immediately be one of the top FAs on the waiver wire. But none of them are good enough to win me the championship. That's how I feel about Frolik, Stalberg, Bickell... In my opinion Frolik, Stalberg, and Bickell (and Kreuger) all have upside offensively. If just one of those guys blossoms a bit this year, things are looking really good. I think that's what the Hawks are banking on. I don't think its unreasonable to think Frolik could have a season closer to his 43 point output 2 years ago (45 the year before). He's a great fit on the 3rd line if he's getting 20+ goals. I really liked what Bickell did at times last year, and at other times I didn't. Stalberg is Stalberg, what can you say.
