  1. I'm doing a special one for today 9/1/23 - Cubs lead the Reds 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th, lose 3-2 9/2/23 - Cubs lead the Reds 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th, lose 2-1 9/16/23 - Cubs lead the Diamondbacks 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, 5-4 bottom 11th, and 6-5 bottom 13th, lose 7-6 in 13 innings 9/26/23 - Cubs lead the Braves 6-5 in the bottom of the 8th, lose 7-6 9/27/23 - Cubs lead the Braves 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th, 4-3 bottom 9, 5-4 bottom 10, lose 6-4 in 10 innings 3/28/24 - Cubs lead the Rangers 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th, lose 4-3 in 10 innings 4/8/24 - Cubs lead the Padres 8-7 in the bottom of the 8th, lose 9-8 4/16/24 - Cubs lead the Diamondbacks 11-10 in the bottom of the 9th, lose 12-11 in 10 innings 4/20/24 - Cubs lead the Marlins 2-1 in the top of the 9th, lose 3-2 5/2/24 - Cubs lead the Mets 6-5 in the bottom of the 11th, lose 7-6 5/3/24 - Cubs lead the Brewers 1-0 in the top of the 8th, lose 3-1 The Cubs have had the lead in the 8th inning or later in 41 of their last 61 games. However they are just 30-31 in those 61 games.
  2. Yeah its interesting. Counsell has a reputation for being great at managing pitching staffs and I'm assuming part of that is knowing how to keep his starters rested throughout the season so they're still strong in September. He's clearly applying those tactics here but instead of Hader and Williams and others he has Neris and Leiter and AAA pitchers. It's clearly not working given the number of blown leads we've had so far this year. Does he adjust his tactics and start letting the starters pitch deeper? Because right now there is absolutely no one in the Cubs pen that is particularly trustworthy. Leiter is the closest but in a good pen he's a solid 7th inning guy and is not without his flaws.
  3. We're in the middle of a stretch of 26 games in 27 days so I'm sure that's part of it. MLB schedule makers did us no favors to start this year. We seem to have a cluster of off days towards the end of May and first half of June. (Of course I swear we lead the MLB in the number of "our team is currently in a death match stretch" stretches over the last 5 years or so)
  4. The answer is to have better bullpen pitchers. It just sucks that we had no way to know going into this season that the pen could be a rough spot for us.
  5. They've played such stupid baseball this year. I don't know who to blame so I'll just blame Counsell.
  6. Not sure. I know when the Cubs lost 5 games in September last year it tied an MLB record for most in a month. This would be our 6th this year so I'm sure its probably several more but we're well on track to pass it at this point.
  7. I'm not defending it, but Palencia and Keegan pitched in multiple innings yesterday, Almonte pitched 2 days in a row, Neris 2 in a row and 3 of last 4. If those 4 are all down its either Adbert or Brewer, assuming you are saving Leiter for the 9th.
  8. Well might as well let him stay in now that its nice and blown
  9. There are no right answers it seems like. Neris is out today, guessing he wanted Leiter for the 9th. I don't like it either but horsefeathers not sure what to even do.
  10. Yeah thats a big part of it. The offense being in a horrific slump really puts a ton of pressure on the pen to be perfect and even a good pen isnt going to be perfect.
  11. 1 out, no one on base. Still high leverage but a pretty safe situation. The groundball single was unlucky but where's the swing and miss stuff. His confidence is shot but i guess he'll keep getting chances because we have no good bullpen arms.
  12. Cant wait until we have some off days so that "Richard Lovelady 8th inning setup man in a 1 run game against the 1st place team" doesnt have to be a regular thing Edit: I just gulped when I realized Adbert was coming in. Prove me wrong.
  13. my new statistic to obsess about to everyone's annoyance!
  14. hey a run. at least it looks like Morel is coming out of it.
  15. BTW according to Baseball-Reference, that is the Cubs MLB leading 15th out on the bases this year. We also lead the league in outs at home with 7
  16. This has to be the last game with Mervis. Too late to get Cooper back but there has to be a better option out there.
  17. Leadoff double stranded because the Cubs cant seem to string 2 hits together in an inning.
  18. OK I went back and counted. The Cubs have played 6 extra innings this year. They've had a runner thrown out at home in 4 of those 6 innings.
  19. What I don't get is that why a team seemingly built to win in the margins seems to be absolutely horrendous at baserunning and has had some pretty high profile defensive lapses. What happened? Is it just a fluke that will correct itself? Or is it just glaring because we've played so many close games.
