  1. I'm trying to figure out if I would be mad or happy if I was a Marlins fan. Happy that Miami is being agressive and spending money of course. But pissed that the team cried poor for years, almost lost the franchise because the team wouldn't pay up for a stadium and now all the sudden they go from acting like one of the most frugal teams in baseball to acting like a big market team competing with the Red Sox and Yankees.
  2. If the Cardinals do sign Pujols for $22 million a year, they will have 7 players under contract making a combined $90 million. If they went with minimum salary players for the other 18 spots (414k I believe), their payroll would be right about $100 million. Keep in mind that last year was the first year that they've ever went over $100 million in payroll ($109 m according to cots). BTW, 2 of those 7 players (Carpenter and Molina) are club options (for 15m and i think 8.5m respectively). Could we see them declining one or both options to afford Pujols? Probably not but interesting nonetheless.
  3. kinda like this thread Oooo...so close. I would have accepted "kinda like NSBB in a nutshell"
  4. And sports journalists wonder why people don't take them seriously anymore. Exactly. I do still like to read all the tweets and articles, but I never take any piece of information anywhere near fact. Every single writer is in a race to throw more and more crap out there. Not one journalist can say that everything they've reported was confirmed and solid info. They just throw garbage out there. Sports journalists are more like the National Enquirer these days. You have to go through 50 pages of BS to find one thing that's accurate.
  5. I'm sure if we were one of the top contenders for him it would have come out by now. We probably made him an offer, but like everyone else he's going to go with whoever throws the most money at him, and that probably won't be us. Cubs FO has been stealth all winter. Who knows for sure if that's the case here
  6. How is Fielder not elite? At worst he's one of the 3 best sluggers in the game today. His career SLG% is 12th among active players, and last year was 5th overall.
  7. Was there ever really a concern that he would? Slight, yeah
  8. The Cubs are not in on Pujols and Fielder, except that the GM specifically mentioned that they are, just yesterday. Now you can say they aren't seriously in on then and just trying to raise the contracts for the winners, but i don't think Tom Verducci could know what their thinking.
  9. I feel like a lot of Cardinals fans are now jumping on that bandwagon as a coping mechanism. Long term it's probably better for a upper midmarket team like STL, but it's still gonna be devistating in the short term.
  10. Not to mention that Cleveland's economy was/is in the crapper rivaled by only Detroit so losing LeBron was like an extra kick in the nuts to their already miserable existence. Yeah LeBron leaving and Albert leaving is absolutely not similar at all other than it being superstars leaving their current teams for Miami in FA. Even without the Decision it was so much worse.
  11. Yea, that would be a relative pain in the ass to get to Wrigley Field to from every day. If I lived in that area and worked there, I'd definitely go the walkable route (and, thus, a bit closer to Wrigley than Theo went with). Didn't Sammy Sosa live in Lake Point Tower? He had his own floor there. Some people would rather walk to work others would rather live downtown and deal with the extra commute. Fwiw I don't feel like that commute is all that bad. The way back would be worse but were talking 30-40 mins tops. The ride from Lakepoint Tower would be much easier as its right on LSD whereas at Trump your gonna have to fight through downtown traffic.
  12. He probably thinks we should sign him and give him to the Red Sox for free as Theo compensation. Seriously, how does a Red Sox beat reporter get this info? My guess is there isn't a single reporter anywhere who truly has a clue as to what's going on tonight. A Red Sox reporter would presumably have a good relationship with Epstein. Though sully's true user name is a more likely source for all of these rumors. Our GM specifically said tonight that we were in on Fielder and Pujols.
  13. Apparently I live in a sweet location. I live about 4 houses down from the house Billy Corgan lived during his Pumpkins days, 2 blocks from Theo, and 3 from Dempster (all on Greenview ave). Duncan Keith almost lives 3 blocks away on Paulina. /name dropping. Maybe Theo wanted to move close to his executive assistant and girl he's tapping on the side.
  14. Id be living in Englewood and taking boards off my windows when I move in.
  15. If you showed that last bit of convo about Dunn to NSBB circa 2006-2007, Tim would have probably taken the board offline for a perminant hiatus.
  16. I kind of don't like Sveum. Bring back Quade! At least he was funny to look at.
  17. What did jersey say? What did I say? [expletive] I read the last couple pages backwards. A couple pages ago you said something about not being upset if we don't get prince or Albert but that doesn't mean you are cool with not trying this year.
  18. Put me on board with what jersey said. Watching people who a month ago were preaching not overpaying in years and/or dollars for fat/old 1B now starting to panic is entertaining.
  19. That pretty much sums it up. All we need is pitchers and position players, but other than that were good. We certainly don't need a DH!
  20. If Albert wants an opt out after 2 or 3 years, then maybe it's feasible that he accepts a 5 year deal with the Cubs. Unless he really thinks he's gonna fall off in the first 3 years of his deal and wants to protect himself for the next 7 years.
  21. Not saying they wouldnt be awesome but Kobe is likely already in his decline, so I would bet in 2 years you could hardly consider him a superstar anymore. Maybe I'm wrong but he sure showed signs of decline last year. His work ethic and desire are second to none, but eventually father time catches up. They would have to gut the roster to trade for Paul and Howard, so the situation would be similar to Miami in that they would be really good but probably lacking for 1-2 years until they can pick up the complimentary pieces.
  22. Looking at the noon games and considering how teams looked during the offseason, the only game I see that is unquestionably better than SD @ Jax is Atlanta @ Houston.
  23. They are re-seeded after the "conference" playoffs, rather than locked into Norris vs. Smythe and Patrick vs. Adams. So there's a possibility that the Hawks and Canucks, for example, could play for the Stanley Cup? That's kind of cool. The crappy thing about this is that there is going to be a lot of unfamiliarity with the majority of the league. Unless you get to the old conference finals round, you will only play the other 22 teams a maximum of 2 times per season.
  24. It's interesting. I never really felt comfortable with playing the west coast teams twice at their place per year. We are 2,000 miles away from those teams. It's quite radical with the idea of 4 conferences. I am assuming that each conference will have their own playoffs and then the 2 "western" league winners will play and same with the East. It's almost like the playoffs with the division playoffs followed by conference finals and stanley cup. I'm glad Detroit remains in our conference so that we still play them 6 times a year. I also like playing every team in the league at least twice. So the schedule would look like this for the Hawks.... 6 games against 3 teams in the "conference" (18 games) and 5 games against the other 4 (20 games). Then a home and home against the remaining 22 teams (44 games).
