  1. In what seems like a huge upset to me, Maddux is going into the HOF with no logo on his cap. That's gotta be a win for Cubs fans right? http://baseballhall.org/news/press-releases/cap-selections-announced-hall-fame-plaques-class-2014-inductees As we know, the HOF can force a cap selection on a player, but ultimately the player gets to make their choice unless the HOF significantly disagrees with them. So either Maddux chose against going in with a Braves logo and the HOF upheld his decision, or Maddux chose a Braves logo and the HOF overruled him and gave him no logo. I'm guessing the former. Edit: Dammit, beaten because I decided to make a long winded reply.
  2. Did anyone else hear that on the radio yesterday? Was a station or program specified? Assuming it would have been on ESPN 1000 given Olney works for them, or maybe it was said on ESPN TV. It was in an article by that Loxas dude. I heard it, too. You can listen to it on the ESPN 1000 daily podcast for yesterday (Wednesday 1/22). Olney spoke in vague, broad terms, but said that he's heard from other owners around MLB that the Cubs' ownership has been "surprised" by how much more difficult and expensive taking over the Cubs has been and how much the Cubs' ownership underestimated all of the money they'd have to put into various "expenses" and how much of a pain in the arse the rooftop situation would be with respect to the renovations. Not incredibly profound, nor is it particularly surprising. It would also be consistent with Theo and Jed not being fully aware of all the financial limitations they'd have; put simply, it's possible that the Ricketts weren't aware, either. Thanks. Which is weird because the MLB supposedly goes through such a vigorous process of scrubbing the candidates to make sure they are worthy of owning a team.

  5. I'm sure Gordon was eager to confirm that report. More negativity from Gordon:
  6. I think Detroit is only 2-6 in SOs now. I hated the SO long before this though I loathe it. When we win a shootout I probably feel about 75% as good as when we win in regulation/OT. That should mean I feel less bad when we lose it but I think I feel worse.
  7. Wow Big Ten teams really like going undefeated for half the year and then go on long losing streaks don't they?
  8. 12 OT/SO losses. Again, not something to worry about long term, but damn annoying anyways. 9-0-2 in our last 11 at the Joe (regular season)
  9. Terrible, we have shitty luck in SOs. We had 6 chances where a score or a save would have won it and failed all 6 times.
  10. With due respect, I don't think Gammons has known anything for a long while now. I put literally no stock in anything he says at this point. Meh, he still has his head up Theo's ass from his Boston days. I wouldn't be surprised if his sources are legit.
  11. $25-30m less? It's kind of hard to compare total dollar amount if you believe the report that the Yankees were the only team willing to add a 7th year on. If the Cubs were offering 6/$130 ($21.6m annually), and the Yankees 7/$155 ($22.1m annually) its definitely not as significant as a shortage..
  12. Deng with the snarky response:
  13. Maybe I'm understanding it wrong but the rooftops didn't sue the Cubs directly. They are suing that Gians guy and the Cubs are named as a defendant. Brett has a good write up of it.
  14. I'm not sure they ever thought there would be a point when a lawsuit wouldn't occur. They were probably never prepared to spend $500m to upgrade the place, and there is no way a jumbotron or other sign would pay for that either. They probably need to wait until additional TV revenue comes in before they can afford to pay for work. So this is all likely a delay on their end while constantly blaming the rooftops and/or the city. That's a decent theory. You may be on to something.
  15. I thought I read something about there being optimism that a deal with the rooftops was near either yesterday or Monday.
  16. What'd they say? Crane alluded to how much of a revenue drain the rooftops are on the team - said $20M - (which is kind of ridiculous even though I hate the RTOs) and Ricketts compared them to a neighbor peering through the window and watching your Showtime shows who gets mad when you close the drapes. Good thing Crane just got an extension. I am like David, I thought those comments were odd when I read them, but I figured Crane and Ricketts were not dumb enough to say something that would blow up a potential deal by venting to a bunch of Cub fans/bloggers/media.
  17. More great news on the Cubs today: http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2014/1/22/5334672/cubs-rooftop-owners-likely-headed-to-court
  18. The thing I hate is that the Cubs have been so damn boring and awful to watch the last 4 years, it would be nice to have something to follow at the major league level. I guess I can hope Rizzo and Castro bounce back and maybe Baez and/or Bryant by the end of the year.
  19. But but.....Fujikawa and that other dude that we invited to ST. DIDNT THEY SHOW HIM THE YOUTUBE VIDEO OF FUKUDOMES HR ON OPENING DAY?
  20. $25 million/yr should buy a pretty good FA pitcher next year. yeah except nobody wants to come play for theo epstein's personal science project/dumpster fire. he could also cure cancer which would be great PR for the team. i love angry abuck
  21. So assuming no major moves, what is our payroll looking like next year? $80m?
  22. So who is the next mid-20's potential TOR pitcher that we go after in FA?
  23. You guys should have known it was going to end poorly when we started comparing this to Roberts and Peavy. This just joins a long list of potential high profile player acquisitions that I obsessed over only to be disappointed in the end. Roberts (ok maybe not too high profile) Peavy Cespedes Tanaka LeBron Amare (back when he was good) Kobe Probably another I'm missing On the bright side, I was semi-obsessed over getting Soler and that one came through for the good guys!
