Dubois for Gerut for Lawton for Berg. Hendry sure took the roundabout way of getting this guy. Perhaps this was the master plan all along. I believe Berg starts tomorrow in Peoria. No, he won't. Angel Guzman will start with Berg piggybacking in Beloit tomorrow. This will happen again on Sunday in Peoria. I thought it was a doubleheader.
The HBP record will always be stupid to me. Who cares about who's the guy who stuck his arm or leg out to get hit the most. For all the high ground that certain media types like to take about steroids and corking, they sure do love it when a guy is gritty enough to cheat and lean into a pitch.
Glendon Rusch, Kent Mercker, Ryan Dempster, Joe Borowski, Matt Clement, Mark Guthrie, Todd Van Poppel, Alan Benes, Ron Mahay. LaTroy Hawkins, Francis Beltran, Matt Clement, Kent Mercker, Alan Benes, Phil Norton, Pat Mahomes, Jeff Fassero, Ron Mahay.
He's not treated as what he is. He isn't treated as a guy to fill in in emergency situations. Instead, he's the first [expletive] bat off the bench in crucial situations, not to mention spot starting EVERYWHERE.
It wouldn't be worth it. The Cubs are still 5.5 games behind Houston, with several teams to pass. They are a longshot at best for the playoffs. If the Cubs aren't likely to make the playoffs anyway, I'll take my chances with Burnitz (or Murton) for the rest of the year and take my chances to get Giles in the offseason rather being stuck with Alou. it would be worth it to burn the 'stros If you want to burn the Astros, let them take him. Yeah, that .328/.418/.507 line will burn them good!
And 4 of those losses the Astros scored 0 runs. What exactly did you want out of Clemens? A 10 inning (or more) shutout so that the Stros could finally score a run?
Everyone keeps talking about ~92 wins getting the wildcard and how impossible it looks for us to get the record to get there. That's a 28-14 finish for Philly or Houston. I think people are underestimating how much the wild card teams have plateaued.
Marquis has been abused. I won't argue with that. It's a struggle just for him to get thru 6 innings, because he's constantly in and out of jams. Carpenter hasn't been abused. He's just been good. Carpenter is simply mowing hitters down late in games (.416 OPS against in innings 7 thru 9 is simply incredible). If a pitcher has thrown 90 pitches in the 8th inning, and is dominating, and isn't the least bit tired, then why would you pull him out? What's the value in leaving him in? So he can pile up on the CG stat?
He's an awful center fielder these days. Maybe 5 years ago, but not now. Rowand has him in every single department. Well he's not an awful CF, but Rowand is definitely better out there. Griffey is still a better fielder than Podsednik or Everett. But of course you've gotta keep Everett's 317 OBP in there. It kept a superior player out in Frank Thomas who had been with the team for 15 years. So why move him for Griffey?
This really seems like the same argument back and forth, so I stopped reading on page 4. If this point was made I apologize. 11.57 That's the ERA whoever relieved Clemens for those ~16 innings has to have in order to match Carpenter's ERA.
The problem is that 3/4 isn't good enough. The Cubs need to play .800 ball in order to win the 93-95 games it's going to take to win the WC. I'm not sure if any team has ever maintained that level of play for that long of a stretch. The 1906 Cubs went 50-8 to end the season, a .862 winning %. On July 24th the Cubs were 61-28 at the end of the season they had 36 losses and had another 55 wins. that's an absurd comparison. You can make a legitimate case that the 1906 Cubs were the greatest baseball team in history (taking into account eras and all that stuff). Of course they would have been able to go on such a streak. the "unprecidented" part of what would be necessary this year, is a team playing less than .500 ball, suddenly turning it on and winning 33 of 44. It's not going to happen. How bout 34 out of 44? Is that unprecedented? Cause it's what the Astros did last year. Likely? Not at all, but certainly not unprecedented.
See, that's why they don't have a playoff in college football. Isn't it more fun to be able to debate who the real champion was? There's no debate. Notre Dame beat Florida St.
But the guys who did the comedy bit weren't Krueger. It was a different guy that had nothing to do with the Krueger situation. They weren't already in trouble. They did a comedy bit about a quote that was absolutely ludicrous. Seems par for the course.
Alou is obviously implying that the White man is the devil. He must be fired. Seriously though, is that much different than the logical leap that led to Cream of Wheat being deemed offensive? It's a smaller leap. I don't understand why the South Park satan bit causes the firing? Are they not to mock ridiculous statements by Alou anymore out of fear of being fired? If this same thing happened in Chicago, it'd be ridiculous and chalk it up to Dusty's thin skin. Just cause Alou's a grumpy old man, and you haven't had to deal with his IQ of white rice decision-making(NOT CALLING HIM UNCLE BEN, JUST SAYING HE'S REALLY DUMB) in person, he gets a free pass and can say whatever off the wall thing he wants and not be held accountable?
LINK Ridiculous. EDIT: In addition to Krueger, 2 others were fired from the station. The program director and the morning show producer were fired. The morning show producer was fired following a morning show bit. On OTL, Felipe Alou called Krueger A MESSENGER OF SATAN. The morning show then did a bit with sound clips of South Park's satan mixed in. I wonder if there will be a public outcry towards Alou calling Krueger a messenger of satan?? Nah...
