  1. Already drafted him. Last year. I just hope he doesn't lose rookie status, then he's not a free keep.
  2. Beano Cook knows even less about baseball than he does about football.
  3. Soriano was and still would be pretty good defensively in CF. It really doesn't matter with our current roster construction though, as all moving Soriano to CF would do would be to allow Murton and Floyd to play at the same time, which really isn't that important to me.
  4. I'm one of the biggest defenders of Murton's defense, but I don't think he has the range to handle CF. It wouldn't be a nightmare if he was forced in there for a couple innings(as he was earlier this year) Or even a start or 2 for whatever reason, but Matt Murton everyday CF is not something I want to see.
  5. I think I said it in the poll too, but that '04 team was the best Cubs team since '45 at least.
  6. It's getting annoying that people keep making judgments about a player's defense based on a couple games. Jones is fine in CF. He's no Pie out there, but he's not nearly as bad as people try and portray him. He's perfectly average defensively. That said, Pie probably deserves another shot, cause Jacque just isn't turning it around at the plate like I thought he would.
  7. Is that solely based on the story about his Jewish ex-girlfriend, or is there more to it? There have been rumblings that he fought in the crusades. I think it was the children's crusade. No, I read that he was postheletizing in the clubhouse or something. I'll see if I can dig it up http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2005-11-06-faith-edit_x.htm That was the story I was referring to. I think it was Church being naive and listening to whatever the chaplain told him. It's quite likely he still believes that, but the way he was quoted regarding the situation he sounded almost innocent about the situation. Something along the lines of "Wow I didn't realize that Jewish people are condemned like that. If only they knew better."
  8. Well their team is horrible so the logical side of me doesn't believe it, but I still hate seeing them just 6 games off the pace knowing that any team can get hot for a month no matter how good or bad they are. World Series title, 83 wins. Jeff Weaver and Anthony Reyes leading the way. They are in it. Unless you prefer burying your head in the sand. This current team is worse than that 83 win team. A lot worse actually.
  9. i'm not following you The money spent on Morris/Izturis could've covered a 5 year major league deal for Weiters. Yup. Except, you guys are mostly payin Izturis. I'm operating under the assumption of Wilson getting dumped this August/offseason with Izturis becoming the new SS for '08. I'd hope for a horrendous last 2 months by Cesar if I were you. But then again, he did the same for us last year, and there he was opening day. If you're interested there's a damning write up of the Pirates Front Office here at BTF Post 104 It's out there, suggesting that the Pirates are losing on purpose(which I completely disagree with), but it does a nice job of summing up everything that's been wrong with the Pirates. I hope for you that the new prez cleans house, but I don't see it happening. I think it's gonna take some serious franchise devaluing, or somebody coming in with an out of this world overmarket bid on the Pirates(A scorned Cuban after the Cubs process?) to turn things around.
  10. I'm pretty sure Fielder would be a FA after 2011. This is his 2nd full season. Hardy I believe would be after 2011 as well. Braun after 2013. So yeah, maybe we shouldn't wait around for them to be FAs. Though, I don't think Hardy is as good as he's been this year. Other than April and May - Hardy has been downright awful this year. My roommate was talking crazy about Hardy for MVP in late May. I've really enjoyed watching his production drop off a cliff in June and July. I haven't enjoyed watching everybody reject my frantic trade offers in May to dump him.
  11. So Soriano doesn't count? (Maybe you're thinking he's past his prime...) 31 at the start of an 8 year deal? Yeah.... Santana would be 30 and a pitcher.

  14. So what does Santana get as a free agent? 7/170?
  15. Choi was actually quite good with Florida in '04. Then he was traded to LA, didn't immediately perform and was jerked around for a couple of years. Then last year in Pawtucket, he was horrendous. I don't know if he was battling injuries last year or what, but there's no reason Choi should've put such a pathetic line (.207/.347/.361) in AAA. I don't know exactly what happened to him. I didn't think he quite looked the same after the concussion as a Cub, but he certainly was doing fine in '04, so it couldn't be due to the concussion. I liked the Lee/Choi trade, as I saw it as paying the extra money for the guaranteed production. I thought we were at that point in the success cycle where it made sense to pay for the possibly marginal upgrade. To say people were against it is kinda misrepresenting things. There were little to no people that were arguing Choi was better than Lee at the time. They instead wanted to keep Choi at 1B because he was cheap and likely productive. They wanted the money spent on upgrading our anemic SS position or upgrading LF after Alou was averageish at best in '03.

  17. Murtonfan, it's simple logic. Theriot steals bases at times when it's easiest. If he were to force in 40+ more attempts, he would be running at times that are suboptimal conditions for stealing bases, thus he would get caught more. You can't simply take every player with over 15 SBs(or whatever arbitrary endpoint you want to use) and say, man if only he tried to steal every time he was on base, he'd be even more valuable. Stolen bases are a risk/reward thing, and you run when there is the least risk. You want him to run when there's more risk of being thrown out,(be it a pitcher better at holding runners, a catcher better at throwing them out, or for whatever reason when he can't get a good jump) while assuming that he'd keep up the same pace he is now.
  18. This is not just a few more SBs you're adding in. That's 35 more to get an adjusted SLG of 480. And even assuming he continues stealing at his current rate(a dubious assumption), you're dropping his adjusted OBP down to 317.
  19. This is crazy, you're assuming every chance to run, Theriot would make it. How bout you adjust his OBP for me for all the CS.
  20. I believe Kendall was receiving the highest paycheck from the Pirates this year until the Morris trade.
  21. Are you saying he's an adulterer? Cause if so, that's a huge accusation and you gotta be careful who you say that about. It's not a baseless accusation. It's a fact.
  22. What GR and bri said.
  23. 2nd. But, I quite liked the return on Tiexeiria.
  24. Remember when we got rid of all our cancers before the '05 season. That was awesome.
  25. I was gonna laugh, but I felt really bad for Pirate fans. But still, I mean wow. haha.
