  1. In your opinion, is he getting squeezed sometimes and overcorrecting by coming back to much over the plate, or has he just lost some of the touch? I ask because many games last year were a battle of wills between him and the ump. If Maddux could keep nipping at the outside (to a right hander) and get the ump to give it to him early it seemed like he would be in for a good outing.
  2. Yoda and Terence Mann all at once. LOL!
  3. You are probably right. Fantasy sports has certainly made the N.F.L. more popular, just look at the bottom line during telecasts. This will be my first year in fantasy baseball and I'm already resigned to the fact that I will buy MLB extra innings. In the past I've only paid for the internet radio to hear Cub games. As far as my interest in the Cubs, the home run chase of 98 and my marriage to a Chicago suburbanite hooked me.
  4. I don't ever play "video game G.M.", but I often find myself wondering why my favorite team didn't get a better right fielder this off-season. Maybe Hendry will answer that on the radio show today.
  5. Well how about Milton Bradley or Brad Wilkerson. Both were traded this offseason, and therefore were available. Either would look a lot better in RF than Jones right now. -Banghart Completely agree. Jones' makeup is what disappoints me. I.E., low OBP. That was an area the Cubs could have upgraded. Other positions have been improved, maybe not to the extent everybody wanted, but they've been improved. RF has not.
  6. What about the players?
  7. Maybe I'm gullible, but I expect Mark Prior to have a crazy good year. The starting pitching does have a lot of question marks, but it also has lots of pitchers to choose from. Like others, I believe if the Cubs keep J. Williams instead of dealing him, they will have a legitimate number 3 starter. Z, Prior, Williams, Maddux, and surely to goodness one of the other 4 or 5 will be healthy/ effective. The talent pool is certainly not shallow.
  8. In a related story, the Arizona Diamondbacks are thinking of changing their name to the "Caterpillars" due to the negative image of poisonous snakebites.
  9. Ouch! So, are the writers at cbssportsline also notorious Cub-haters, or does most of the media just agree that Jones is the antithesis of what the club needed for 2006?
  10. I was wondering the same thing. I got Jose's autograph when the Pirates were in St Louis back in '66. That's when they used Birch Trees for paper right? :D :D
  11. Other than his somewhat oxymoronic name, I got nothing.
  12. Not from me, I'm right there with you. I'd rather keep Williams and Murton than Pie and Hill, for many reasons. You're more likely to get an impact player for Pie/Hill, Murton/Williams are more suited to contributing right now, which is our window while Z, Prior, Aramis and Lee are relatively young and under contract. Plus, I think in 25 years Murton will be the better OF, and I think Williams is criminally undervalued. I'm not sure we can wait that long on Murton. At least by then he'll be old enough to where we'll be more confident that Baker will start him.
  13. Clement would be the Reds' best pitcher by far.
  14. This is true. "We are the world, we are the people," Vance Vance, What's with the 80's music quotes? "Kiss me deadly," Wade
  15. drinking age.
  16. He could never get lefthanded hitter out. That wasn't his area. He was a relief pitcher that should be used against right handers. You should have told Baker that. Steve Stone did.
  17. I like the signing, and suspect a lot of other posters will too.
  18. I hope Hendry does not trade for him. Soriano has asked for 12 million and the Nationals have countered with 10. That's awful for what he provides, even if you're only paying for half a year.
  19. I hadn't seen that article yet, but I did read one talking about the remaining free agents and when they got to Frank Thomas they pointed out his weaknesses before saying- "To me, that makes him a more attractive buy than someone like, say, Jacque Jones, who might play in 150 games and drag you down towards 77 wins." Yikes. EDIT- I just noticed that is the very quote the article is defending.
  20. Sports Illustrated also said the Cubs would win the world series in 2004. I still have the cover if I need to prove it. :(
  21. Interesting that Arroyo basically gives Boston a hometown discount for his services, which in turn makes him even more valuable to trade somewhere else.
  22. 2006 will be my first excursion into fantasy baseball. The league I'm joining has been around for about 10 years and the now their baseball. I feel I'm pretty knowlegable about the sport, but would appreciate any fantasy tips/ strategies anyone may have to offer. This league is has pretty basic scoring from what I understand. Thanks in advance...
