Your Thoughts on Hendry's Plan

I think the plan is to get Furcal. It's stated that he is number one on their wish-list, so leadoff and SS = Furcal, filling a hole. With Neifi's signing, 2B is either his, or his and Cedeno's/Hairston's/Neifi's alone (depending on something I'll get to soon) so there's 2B. A hole filled where no hole was there in the first place (Walker). LF = Murton, I think. That leaves CF, RF, and pitching. I think he'll try to upgrade pitching through free agency. So, with what's happened already (and I'm echoing some things said elsewhere here and in the papers) Walker and Williams and possibly Hairston, Cedeno, Patterson, Mitre, and maybe Hill are all on the block. I think it points to Hendry looking to make a big trade. An Abreu/Dunn-type trade where he does what he's good at- taking on a good player because the other team can't afford them. Similar to how they got Lee and Ramirez. Hendry mentioned that the free agent crop is thin and he expects more trading this winter. I think he'll be in the middle of a big deal. At least I hope he is. -
Right and signing Neifi precludes any chance at the bigger targets? The extra $1-1.5M that Neifi costs over an alternative means no Brian Giles? Who would you sign instead for the same backup role that doesn't make bigger signings impossible? What people are afraid of is not just the extra 1.5 to 2M for Neifi, but the extra 2m for Rusch and whatever bad signing is next. Those start adding up when you have guys like Cedeno and Williams who are just as good for way less. They have arguably spent 11M over the next two years on players whose production could have been matched for nearly league minimum. That's the difference between Giles and Encarnacion, I'm afraid.

SCFan asked earlier if Perez can even be dealt unitl June 15th....does anyone know if he can be? Yeah, that's what I want to know, too. He filed for FA, didn't he? I think that means we're stuck with him until June. Besides, why would we sign him to trade him, and who in their right mind would take Perez at $2.5m? That is exactly what I'm afraid of. If they sign Furcal, either Walker or Cedeno will be traded. Or both.

I've looked all over and can't find a definitive answer on whether someone like Perez could even be traded this off-season. I know if arbitration is reached with a player they can't be traded until next year, but I can't find the rule in this situation. Anyway, the point is the Cubs have several options at M.I. and have listed Furcal as their number one target. I'm afraid this means Cedeno and Walker will be gone as they are eligible to trade and would bring back much more in return than Neifi Perez.

really makes you wear that believe bracelet proud doesn't it? I'm trying to fashion a noose out of mine right now. I've tried to find financials on this deal and have had no luck. When that shoe drops I expect it to be about the same $ as Rusch. Unreal.

It's not a dealbreaker, but he is yet another right handed bat. Trading Todd Walker for him would give up the one current player the Cubs have signed that's a decent hitter from the left side. Also, it looks like Mench can play right, but has mostly played LF so far in his career. I think he's arby eligible, so it's not like the Cubs will free salary or anything. In short, I'd probably pass. -
I'm starting to get used to the idea of Furcal because, well, it looks like he really is their number one target and I might as well get used to it. My only concern with going after him so hard is if in their pursuit, Nomar is gone and he's not available to fall back on.

Eric Karros was commenting on ESPN radio. I thought he made a couple of good points. One was that he didn't see how ESPN talking heads could criticize poker playing since poker playing takes up a lot of ESPN airtime. One point he made and tied to the steroid scandel well, was that often people look at baseball players and what they do outside of baseball. If a vice is found, then it's a "baseball problem". Karros' point was that no, it's a society problem. Problems in society bleed over into baseball, not the other way around.

because nomar's backup would be cedeno, who i wouldn't mind see getting forced into the starting role. that, and the alternative may be grossly overpaying for furcal. i'd rather pay nomar $4 mil, have him get hurt and miss four months, and let cedeno play than give furcal a 4/$45 type deal. I completely agree. Well, it would be nice if Nomar didn't get hurt and put up good numbers, but I like that worse-case scenario.

The site I found those projections on did. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2515 ZiPS is labled as "Primer" in the comparison. I'll need Bob's Keeper's cliff notes version to understand it, though.

I found the lack of love for Todd Walker's OBP chances strange. 336 would be a huge drop for him. I think these are not considered as accurate as PECOTA, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Gammons was on Mike and Mike this morning talking about this article. He agreed with the article and thought Manny would not want the Mets and that Anaheim was his number one choice. Gammons also said Arizona is looking to deal Glaus and that perhaps the Red Sox would trade for him, put him at first, and bat Manny third, Pappi fourth, and Glaus fifth. In that scenario Gammons saw Damon leaving Boston, but if Damon is resigned that they would likely try to move Manny. I too wanted to hear the Cubs mentioned, if nothing more than "they have money to spend and need a big-bat outfielder".

I'm really pulling for this guy to get his career back on track. I don't know if it will be with the Cubs or not, but having followed him a lot more closely the past year and a half than I had before, he really seems like a good guy. Plus, his wife is a babe.
