  1. Funny, isn't it, that if Bonds where healthy he'd be getting all kinds of attention for his career homer chase, while the 180 pound old guy on a beer and skittles diet doesn't get much love for a pretty big accomplishment. Chics dig the longe ball, indeed.
  2. An interesting note vis a vis Maddux and Jenkings. They will be the only two 3000 strikeout guys that have issued less than 1000 walks. Maddux's total will likely be even lower than Jenkins' when it's all said and done, giving him one of, if not the best, career k/bb ratios ever.
  3. I'm not trying to scare you guys, but I think about this article every time I hear about Angel Guzman and it has come to mind now regarding Kerry Wood. http://slate.msn.com/id/2100895/ Some scary points from Carroll include "there's no difference between a 'frayed' labrum and a torn labrum" and that most pitchers just don't come back from that injury. On the bright side (as brought up earlier), Morris is listed :google: as having a frayed labrum surgically repaired this past off-season, so maybe strides have been made concerning the ability to correct these types of problems. If I were a decision maker on the club, I'd probably opt to shut him down lest he completely tear the labrum and possibly end his career.
  4. I wouldn't read too much into these. Everybody will speculate for the next 7 days, hoping they are the ones that guess right. My local paper carried a Dallas writer who covered the looming trade deadline and listed buyers, sellers, and in between teams. He said the Cubs are always buyers and that Adam Dunn would be their number one target.
  5. cubs.com is also reporting this.
  6. I'll look for you two on the "kiss cam".
  7. They must think today is Thursday.
  8. I don't know, man. He's only 25 and I think there's a pretty good chance he will get even better than he is now. Lots of players reach their peak in their late 20's.
  9. Well, I'll have to beg for help on the PECOTA thing. I know what it is and what it's supposed to do, but I don't know the details, nor subscribe to the service that provides it. But like I said, apparently players over 30 who've been injured before and missed quite a bit of time are statistically more likely to be hurt again. At least that's the way I take it. I forgot that they had Nomar getting that many AB's. I remember they had Ronny Cedeno playing something like 60 games, and during Neifi's slumps I've pined for that to have come true.
  10. For what it's worth, PECOTA projected before the season started that Nomar would miss significant time. Not that it's an infallible method of predicting performance, but it shows that there were indications somewhere that he may be hurt again. As I understand the system, 30 year-old plus players that have had serious injuries are more likely to have more injuries down the road. Even if they are not injuries that are related to one another. Nomar didn't get a long term deal going into the year because of concerns by other teams about his ability to stay healthy. That said, I hope he's back soon.
  11. Wohoo, an obscure reference that I picked up on! Unless it wasnt, and it was just a coincidental choice of words. Gah, its too early to think this much. Is Robert Frost really obscure, Roast? :P He must be. I don't even know what team he plays on.
  12. Is it just against the Cubs, or is Miller hitting a lot better this year? 07/12 team AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB K SB BA OBP SLG OPS D. Miller Milw 204 26 54 14 0 4 80 20 19 45 0 0.265 0.336 0.392 0.728 Yep. I just checked ESPN and Miller's year with the Cubs was worse than any other year he's ever had offensively. By a good margin.

  14. I have faith in him and frankly, I like the guy from what I've seen/ read about him. I think the Cubs hit rock bottom a couple of weeks ago regarding their on-base problems. Nearly everyone on this board (not me, I learned from reading from others) predicted beforehand that the team didn't have enough people that would get on base enough to make the offense a steady threat day in and day out. I think the management, and perhaps coaching staff have finally realized this and the changes are being made. I don't know if this minor trade is leading to anything major this year. I suspect the Cubs are hoping a healthy Nomar would be enough to put them over the top (combined with the guys the now have in the one-two spot as opposed to what had been gone with before). I agree with other posts I've seen on the topic that Hendry has found players he likes and has traded for them. This may be another example. It may also be an example of the Cubs having several scouts at their disposal and a willingness to take a shot at a guy who's tools suggest that they will put up better numbers in the future. Anyway, I have faith in him and I hope his maneuvers (if any more are to follow) lead to a playoff birth.
  15. I'm thinking he would've brought a chair in from the dugout and wacked the guy on the head, then spraypainted "FARNS" on his chest while he was knocked out.
  16. Heh, he did try to body slam Affedlt, but at the last minute, Affedlt just DDT'd him. What is DDT'd? Like if you watch WWF or WCW awhile ago, where Diamond Dallas Page just stuns him. omg im having flashbacks of watching WCW as a lil kid reminds how awesome bill goldberg is...err was, whats that man doin now? Goldberg hosts a show on, I think, the History channel. Something about Route 66 I believe. Anyway, Farnsworth is awesome.
  17. He has not agreed to further cooperation. See http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/bal-balco715,1,6776528.story "Conte said he would not be required to assist in the prosecution of anyone else involved in the investigation." Thus, Barry is probably safe since he admitted to receiving packages and using them, but not to knowing what they contained. Prosecution would probably require Conte's help and testimony that he spoke to Barry and Barry understood they were steroids. If the Plea is approved, he will not be required to testify.... I don't think Barry is safe. Your link surprised me because SportsCenter said he would cooperate. At the same time, Conte has lied so much during the course of this thing, I don't really listen to what he says in the press. Feds don't just give out sweetheart deals and help people serve their sentences on home detention. Do you think he could he get Giambi and Sheffield in any trouble, or by just basically being users are they not really in any danger of penalty?
  18. He'll strike out first. You gotta put the ball into play before a DP can be formed. Strike 'em out, throw 'em out.
  19. I just heard it before I walked into work. Seems like they said he was asked if he would consider it and he said something to the effect of "how could you not consider it". Then the hosts talked about how Cuban is all for spending money and treating players right, but also is for advertising on uniforms, etc.
  20. I thought he always has been a guy that would walk.
  21. I like the guy and hope he comes back healthy. That said, if they sign him for next year, it's got to be a lower contract than this year and based on plate appearances. The management also would have to have faith that Cedeno would be ready in the event of another injury. It's a heck of a gamble, one that could pay off he's somehow healthy and hits anywhere near like he used to, and one that could wreck the offense in the event of another bad injury like this year.
  22. The key is the first two series. If we cant's go 6-2 then I doubt we make any big moves (unless there is future value). I'm almost afraid we'd have to do even better than that considering the historic difficulty the Cubs have had going to St. Louis. I don't see us sweeping either of those teams, to be honest. I think they have the ability, but it is hard to sweep anybody in a 4 game series (generally).

  24. I'm not real qualified to answer as per the minor league pitching talent, but it seems to me that it's not a matter of Patterson not having the ability to hit MLB level pitching because of their "stuff", but it's pitch recognition and a horrid slump that he's trying to remedy against minor league pitchers. He's hit MLB level pitching for some extended periods, it's now a matter of swinging at the right ones, IMO.
  25. Booing is an emotional response. Just like yelling at a kid you are coaching, or a teammate when they screw up. Still doesn't help them get better very often. Some people do respond to that type of pressure by performing better, but the majority of people who are already putting a lot of pressure on themselves do not play better when booed or heckled or put down. I'll never tell someone not to boo, but I don't like it when they boo players on a team that I want to win, because I don't think it helps a player at all and more often than not hinders their improvement, therby (even if only slightly) hurting my team's chances of winning. Players like Derrick Lee have said booing doesn't help players get better. But hey, what does he know, he's just a mindless robot who makes way more money than me, so screw him if he strikes out. And it's not like he's a bad example. He was booed last year when he started slow in April. I ride the fence on nearly every side of any arguement on this board. Tools vs. Stats, Dusty's bad vs. Dusty's good, etc. But this is one that I have a hard time understanding the other side. Booing Kenny Rogers? Yeah, I see that. Booing a guy on a team that I want to win? I don't get it.
