  1. You know, Baltimore still owes the Cubs a PTBNL fromt he Sosa deal because that Crouthers guy retired. If something for Tejada were to be worked out, I'd probably just let them slide on it, though.
  2. In fairness to Dombrowski, the last time they did that was Juan Gonzalez. That might be making them a little gun-shy. Juan played one year (well, a good chunk of it anyway) and turned down the Tigers offer of 100 million, essentially doing them a great favor, though it was not viewed that way at the time. Juan didn't cost them much money, just a ton of players for a one year rental. They are throwing the money around like crazy now, and on guys that aren't the level of player that Juan was when he was traded for.
  3. My thoughts exactly. I was already dreaming of Drew before there was a hint of his availability. He is a big-time injury risk, but as I wrote in another thread, he's exactly what the Cubs need for RF and at this point they have to take a shot and try to get an impact player somehow.
  4. And the nutty spending continues. Jeez, Illitch wouldn't spend money for a few years and when he opens up the wallet, Dombrowski is throwing it at anybody and everybody. Detroit HAS to overspend to get people to go there, they should do it on really good players, though.
  5. I'm guessing this is the first time "Pretty Woman" has ever been quoted on NSBB. I like to think of myself as a trendsetter.
  6. Man, the Tigers are desperate. They remind me of Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman"- "I've got all this money, and no one will sell me any clothes" I said last year that at least they're trying, but boy am I having a hard time with some of their ideas.
  7. To the guys who think Hendry is unfairly/ overly criticized on this messageboard- What sort of posts do you expect when/if the Cubs sign or trade for a very good player? Speaking for myself, my criticism will lessen when or if they add a good player for a much needed position.
  8. You've really convinced yourself that you'd make a better GM, haven't you? At this point, he's convinced me, too.
  9. It's more than tiresome, I can't stand it. Some people have the memory of a goldfish, and have the art of knee-jerk reactions mastered. The memory of a goldfish? Cant say that I've ever heard that one. You did, you just forgot.
  10. As a generally optimistic, my team can do no wrong, homer I feel qualified to answer this. I am scared to death that my favorite team in baseball, one who currently has some really good players and pitchers on it, will not be able to make the playoffs next year. There are serious holes on this team right now. Even if bullpen, RF, starting pitchers, CF, SS, and leadoff are all labled as the same as far as importance of need goes, so far the only things "fixed" are bullpen and starting pitching. Two spots where at least decent options were already available in house. EDIT- And, I have echoed three other guys while typing this!
  11. Why not just keep Dunn? I think it was "talk to the Reds about getting Dunn, less interest in Kearns, with possibility of using Kearns to get Wilkerson."
  12. That post got progressively worse as I read. Yeah, he actually led with the Pierre part and I forgot to put it in. The tone of the Bradley talk was pretty good overall for anyone hoping that he's targeted.
  13. Abreu would be good fit, but it would take probably too much to get him.
  14. Not interested in Soriano! Interest in Bradley, but concerned about temper, etc. Forgot to say Pierre still a prime target.
  15. Uh, he just said the Cubs would love to have Adam Dunn. Said a lesser deal could be worked for Kearns. Said they like Wilkinson from the Nats as well.
  16. That's a valid point. If I were G.M. I woulda liked to see what he'd say to 3 years and 35 million. I don't know if the other published offers were really that high or if he didn't want to go there. But, I would have tried, nonetheless. The Dodgers did offer Giles 3/34.5, so I don't think 3/35 would have caused him to come to the Cubs. 3/40 maybe. Well, I missed that. As for the eggs in the basket reference, Jay Mariotti echoed that in today's Suntimes, so great minds think alike. 8-[

  18. I've got to start typing faster.
  19. 5/50 on one guy is kind of putting all your eggs in one basket. I think he said himself Furcal was the number one target. Myself, I'm afraid that the tunnelvision on Furcal may have cost the Cubs Brian Giles, who was way more needed than Furcal, in my opinion.
  20. I think he means Maggs, who is way riskier than Drew even. Guillen missed time here and there all year because of a torn ACL the year before.
  21. I thought about him too, but he's just as big of an injury risk, more expensive, right handed, and older. I'd say his availability level is greater than Drew's though. Any way the Tigers throw in Carlos Guillen? Was he hurt for the first half of last season, or the second half? He'll be 32 in January, for the record. He came back from his knee injury for spring training, then suffered a sports hernia. After missing 1/2 off the beginning of the season, he came back and hit somewhere around .300. If memory serves, he had about a 20-25 game hit streak in the second half of the year.
  22. That is not a good comparison. Drew actually put up good numbers, often, and has completely outperformed Patterson in their respective careers. What he said. Patterson will not walk and strikes out a lot. J.D. walks a lot and strikes out a little. I don't think he was comparing #'s, he was comparing frustration levels. When J.D. came up he was suppose to be the next Mickey Mantle with his pretty swing. The fans perception is he wouldn't play through injuries and when he was out there he'd dog it. TLR felt he was content with being merely good even though he had the ability to be great. But, that's still the point, For all but two months, Corey hasn't really even be good. :( So, our frustration is greater than yours. Can't you let us win anything?

  24. What I believe: If a free agent signs a multi year contract with a new team, and is then traded during that contract, he can respond by demanding a trade from his new team after the first season there, and if that demand is not met, he can become a free agent. I'm not sure exactly when you have that right and when you lose it. For instance, Drew signed a 5 year deal. After 1 year on the Dodgers I assume he retains that right. But what if he was traded following year 3. Could he still demand a trade after year 4? That fits with some of the requests I remember off hand. Regardless, I guess it'd be bad because of what they'd have to give up if he exercised after one year. Still, why would he want to be traded, he'd be playing for Dusty!
