  1. I never wrote that Lee wouldn't slump (at least not in this thread, anyway) - you imputed that. Besides, I wasn't talking about Lee, I was talking about Carpenter. There is empirical evidence that Carpenter has faded, (albeit due to injury, I believe) and therefore, I will not predict Cy for him until he actually goes out and takes it. I didn't write that he would NOT do it, just that I'll believe it if/when it does happen, and only then, that's all. I think that is a reasonable approach, no?
  2. Well, that's a different animal. I wasn't talking about Lee. My opinion was with regard to Carpenter, and Lee has nothing to do with my observation and opinion there. I agree with both of you. I need to see Carp do it for an entire year. I think he will, as I think Lee will have a good 2nd half as well. Over/Under on DEEPUJOLS? I'm setting it at 15 posts... I can agree with this Cardinal fan more often than not. :? Not so strange, huh? You never know - he might make it to twenty.
  3. disagreed. i watched game 6 in a bar on campus, and there were a LOT of sox fans cheering and jumping up and down and hugging each other. i only know of one sox fan who rooted for the cubs in the '03 playoffs. Well a course, but think about it... they were watching the cubs.. I dont think people watch teams to lose just when they were getting their asses kicked they are going to pretend they did. Also judging fans at a bar isnt a great idea. I bet most of them were so drunk they just saw one person cheer and all decided to cheer with him. Agree with ltb here. My father, for example, is my best friend, but he is also a die hard Sox fan. (how nice of me to stab him in the back, some friend I am). Anyway, I know my father loves me and all, but he HATES the Cubs and was actively rooting for the Marlins even thought the series loss pretty much ruined my month. He didn't care, he was happy as hell. If my own father felt that way about it even though his only son was suffering (as a fan), I don't imagine there are too many Sox fans that are pulling/or pulled for the Cubs. Contrarily, I do admit to be a closet Sox fan. When they are good (and its rare) my dad is in so much happier and more pleasant to be around. That is enough to make me pull for them. Remember the Sox fan that dressed up in Marlins clothing and went to a game heckling all the Cub fans, and then got kicked out. I think he actually sued afterward....

  5. I'm pretty sure the fielder is entitlted to the basepath as long as he is fielding the ball. I didn't see the play, so I can't really judge in this case, but I don't think a runner has a right to knock a fielder out of the way that is fielding a throw, regardless of where they are in the basepath. See Mark prior's interference with Marcus Giles a couple of years ago. Prior was in the basepath, but the baserunner MUST yield to the fielder to allow that fielder to make a play on a batted ball. Otherwise, the baserunner is out. This case is different because Jennings was not fielding a batted ball, but attempting to catch a throw from a teammate.
  6. Absolutely.....unfortunately.
  7. He will fade but a career .270 hitter will probably continue to hit .370 Trolling huh? You won't last long here. I guess he is...? I really don't know what my opinion of Carpenter has to do with those batting averages, but whatever :?:
  8. Carp's been good, but this is a joke. Carpenter will fade, IMO. He's going to have to put together the complete good year before I'll believe he can actually do it.
  9. Do you have astigmatism?    Really, his eyesight is not relevant, is it?
  10. You sure that last line wasn't from the Dusty archive. Only if he was discussing a washed up veteran/utility player.
  11. I agree. If nothing else, LaRussa is relentless, and will put them away at the next opportunity if he can.
  12. IMO, Baker is going nowhere until his contract is up. The latest moves reflect Hendry's touch. He usually lets Baker run the lineup/games, but I believe he has stepped in and forced Baker's hand. It needed to be done. Baker isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he is smart enough to do what he's told by his boss. Sorry fellas, but Baker will finish his contract with the Cubs. After that, who knows....
  13. I think that by sending Patterson down, a message is starting to be sent by management. I think more moves are on the way, and the Cubs will be sellers at the deadline. Do you think that they will gut the team? Who would be safe? Safe players, IMO: Ramirez Lee Prior Zambrano Cedeño Maybe 2-3 other young players (like Williams) What do you guys think? Is the Patterson demotion the first move in a general approach to gut the team, and are you in favour of such a gutting?
  14. I find it very frustrating, and infuriating, that despite all of the evidence to the contrary, Macias is a Cub, and Perez is still batting lead-off. Apparently, Baker does not like Hairston. Regardless, you have to put your team in the best position to win, and he refuses to do that. Why? Because he is stubborn - plain and simple. I cannot think of any other logical explanation. Lineup, IMO, should be: Hairston Walker Lee Ramirez Burnitz Barrett Hollandsworth/Dubois Perez Pitcher If Lee is sitting due to injury, both Dubois and Hollandsworth play, and you move everybody up one spot, and bat them six and seven. This is a real simple thing to do that will put your team in a better position to succeed, but Baker won't do it.
  15. Realistically speaking, the Cubs have never been a threat to the Cardinals this season. They were not expected to threaten, and IMO, they will not. Their only real chance for the playoffs is the wild card. They had better start hitting more consistently, otherwise they will have these losing streaks where a four or five run game for them is considered a glut of scoring.
  16. Hey Cardinal fans, what is it with your team anyway? The Rockies are kryptonite for Cardinals. I don't get it, but it seems like every team has that one team that always holds the upper hand, regardless of how good (or bad) of a season they are having.
  17. It's the Chief! ILL INI Oh...., a mascot.
  18. What for? He did nothing wrong.
  19. cbbryan......, what..., is that thing...., in your avatar???
  20. Who cares what some homer Saint Louis paper writes about the Cubs? I know I don't pay any more attention to them than I do to, say...., Jay Mariotti... It is what it is. No surprise there.
  21. Hey rudd, I used to live there! If the Cubbies won it all, I'd have to go back there and visit my dad's grave at Camp Butler. He got to see them in a series (1945), but he never saw them win one. I have him to thank for raising me as a Cub fan, and I would have to have a drink with him if they won it all.
  22. You'll probably post a few times, flip out in a thread in "rivalries" and get banned. I sincerely hope not. I jumped in here to mix it up, in a friendly manner, with some of the best fans in MLB. I hope I'm allowed to set up my lawn chair, ice up a 12-pack, and share some dialogue. What kind of beverage is in that 12-pack. . . ?
  23. This makes more sense to me than Wells. Of course, who would not want Wells...., but I like Mench too. When is Edmonds' contract up?
