  1. Yes. And Dawson was awesome. You had to be there. I did see him play, though I was a lad at the time. Believe me, at the time I thought he was amazing. Looking at his career stats, he was still very good, but the stats show he wasn't as awesome as I remembered. It's funny, too. When I was a kid, for whatever reason, I thought Shawon Dunston was absolutely awesome. Now when I look at his stats, I realize he was pretty terrible. I'm talking even worse than Neifi levels of bad. But as a kid, I thought he was the best shortstop in the world. If I had the baseball knowledge I have now while watching in those days, I would have hated Dunston a lot. Dawson had a span of a few years there (MVP year was in there) where he was just absolutely money, and everyone knew it. =P~ It was really fun to watch. Too bad he was a no-show in the playoffs against the Giants, they could have used his bat! Dunston had the best arm (pure power) of any fielder I've ever seen, and really, there were few pitchers that could throw the ball as hard or harder than Dunston. Trouble was, he was a tad wild sometimes.
  2. This comment alone provides enough impetus for me to never read 'Scoop' Jackson's drivel.
  3. Looks like a planned leak to counter Palmeiro's BS stories about this being an accident. I wish MLB would just come out on the record with specific details instead of leaking anonymously. Everyone who's been caught so far has claimed it was due to an accident or innocent mistake and the lies will continue until MLB starts issuing public rebuttals. It's embarassing to the sport to have these liars go unchallenged by MLB. I believe that they are restricted by law from giving specifics. Only the 'employee' can waive the right (which is theirs). If you're one of those guys, would you waive your right to privacy?
  4. Wow. Look at how much younger Ronnie looks in that picture than he does now. It's amazing what watching the Cubs every day for the past several years has done to him. JD is a devastating disease, and it, combined with the medication, as well as the other medical problems Santo has had, have absolutely ravaged him. JD really takes a costly toll on the human body. He's already very lucky to have lived as long as he has. Seriously. BTW, that was a good article.
  5. No he didn't lie, he was just evasive.
  6. so what? Things were better in his day. I guess that's your opinion. Personally, I think baseball is better now. I agree with OleMiss, baseball was better then. Certainly, more players paid more attention to the fundamentals.
  7. 14) All the players were skinny. Even the 'big' players were wirey and slender. I think Keith Moreland was just about the only player with some real beef to him. Today's players are much more ripped.
  8. Chief, I have not seen you around much lately, where ya been? I'm catching up with you on posts. I remembered that game (or so I thought) like yesterday, until I actually watched it, and realized how things really have changed since 1984! Good to see you back.
  9. 13) Oh yeah, the big glasses/sunglasses look was pretty bad too! EDIT - Larry Bowa's sunglasses made me laugh out loud!
  10. I thought about posting this in the 'Baseball Discussions' Forum, but really, the game was against the Cardinals, which made it very sweet, and thus, it landed here. I watched the replay, which cut out all the non-scoring half-innings. I want to know: 1) Why did we all think that the puffy-hair look was good? 2) Did you notice that there were no bleachers on the rooftops across from the park? 3) the Cub uniforms were weak, but (much to many Cardinal fans' disagreement) those baby blue Cardinal road uniforms were heinous, and I for one am glad that they went back to grey. 4) Willie McGee hit for the cycle, and got upstaged! 5) Ozzie Smith was awesome. Really, if it wasn't for his great play, I believe the Cubs would have won in nine. 6) God, those baby blue Cardinal uni's were ugly. 7) Did you notice the big hair in the stands (women AND men)? 8 ) It made me feel old. 9) Sandberg WAS great, and deserves every accolade he gets. 10) Props to Sutter, who was in the twilight of his career, but recognized greatness when he saw it. 11) It could not have come against a more fitting foe. 12) It was the first time the Cubs won anything meaningful since 1945, and unfortunately (or fortunately?), it spawned a new generation of Cub fan who not only wants to win, but EXPECTS to win. God bless Ryno, and congratulations
  11. As far as the Cub's organization is concerned, Sisco is spilled milk. It has been wiped up as much as can be, let's move on. There's nothin' we can do about it now.
  12. Awesome column. Mariotti, IMO, is a tool. He garners zero respect from me (as if THAT really matters). IMO, he has no standing to preach as if he is a Cub fan, because he is not! He doesn't know jack.
  13. http://www.baseball-reference.com/ Thanks - it does not list a date of death in that web-site.
  14. OK, here's a list of all the living former Cub managers. Take your pick. 15. I wonder...., whom that would be? Herm Franks? Dallas Green? Anyone got any idea?
  16. No problem here with booing poor EFFORT, but poor performance does not always equal poor effort. IMO, we should not boo when the opposition brings Hawkins in, we should cheer loudly. Very loudly. We should be happy that the Cubs actually get a shot at blowing his save instead of him giving it up while playing for the Cubs. It makes sense to me. The 'Hawkins sucks' chant was a bit much, and I am embarrassed to be a Cub fan because of that. Booing is as much a part of baseball as any other aspect.
  17. Here we are, and it has been over a month since my last post on this thread. D. Lee has been tailing off. 18. I just don't understand how you can act like that when you're great either. 'hot-dogging' is for losers, IMO, and I think it shows-up the other players to do stuff like that.
  19. Honestly, how would we even know that since he never gets to play? ](*,) Just by looking at stick Cedeno and big balding bull Pujols. I mean c'mon.... The question was rhetorical. But the point is valid, and that is that we don't know what kind of player Cedeño is unless he get significant PT. Now, when Nomar comes back, Neifi goes to the bench, and Cedeño goes to AAA-ball.
  20. Honestly, how would we even know that since he never gets to play? ](*,)
  21. Gerut has not passed up Murton on the ph chart. You're going overboard now. If the first pinch-hitter up is against a lefty pitcher, do you really think Gerut would get the call? They both have to stand in line behind Macias! :x
  22. I think if Nomar is healthy, he will get the lion's share of PT. More importantly, when Nomar comes back, will Cedeño get sent down, or....... will they DFA Macias? :D
  23. Does anybody else think that Walker will retire at the end of the season?
