  1. I disagree. First of all, I think it is self rightous for you to write like you know what was going on in Sandberg's personal life, AND to expect him to be a certain way (I guess, how you or others might have been). Really, how can you preach about what he did or how he should have acted unless you're him, going through the same things he went through? The answer is that you cannot. Different people handle situations differently - it's called being human individuals. There are also many people who take time off to deal with their personal problems, he just happens to be one of those people. Sorry that he did not measure up to your expectations, but I doubt he's losing sleep over it. Second, you could look at his respect for the game a little bit differently. Did you think maybe he left during 1994 BECAUSE of his respect for the game? He wasn't able to give his best effort, because of his personal problems. This half-hearted approach was not good enough, and he had to take time off to deal with his problems. This could be seen as SHOWING respect for the game, not the other way around. There are two sides to every coin. Are you the same dhaab that posts at STLTODAY?
  2. You guys are too hard on Baker, IMO. I get frustrated with him too, but..., nobody can make chicken salad out of chicken feces (well, there's another word for that saying, but it is vulgar). Suffice to say that this team is simply not good enough, and it wouldn't matter if Baker was Harry Potter. JMHO. I felt that way at the beginning of the year, and nothing has happened to change my opinion. I figured that they would have to have everything go right for them to make the post season, and everything did not go right. I would, however, like to see the kids play, since the Cubbies are out of it. So, we can only hope that Hendry shares our thoughts and give Baker the word to do so.
  3. Why do you care? If our roles were reversed, I'd be enjoying the Cubs success instead of trying to extract some praise from a bunch of Cardinal fans.
  4. Unequivocably, yes, at least I would. I was never a big fan of showboating Sammy (and showboating in general). Sure, I'm a Cub fan, so I appreciated what he did for the Cubs (e.g. offencive production), but if he would have done it with a little class, I would have been a real exhuberant fan of his. As it was, I was glad to see him go when his production fell off.
  5. Three words.... insufficient sample size.
  6. So, what about this alignment? AL East Boston New York Baltimore Toronto AL North Chicago Minnesota Cleveland Detroit AL South Tampa Bay Kansas City Texas New Orleans? AL West Los Angeles Oakland Seattle Las Vegas?? NL East Washington New York Philadelphia Pittsburgh NL South Florida Atlanta Houston Cincinnati NL North St. Louis Chicago Milwaukee Colorado NL West San Diego Arizona Los Angeles San Francisco
  7. =D> Excellent post. Just enough truth to make the sarcasm bite hard enough to cause pain and pleasure simultaneously. Ahhh, the life of a Cub fan. :D
  8. Yes, it is unrelated. Besides, nobody 'complained'. He just said 'unreal', which it kind of is, IMO. You have to admit, it is highly unusual, although I have come to expect these things in baseball - it's the nature of the game.
  9. I both agree, and disagree. Murton should be playing every day now that Hairston went down. Perez is a utility guy, and a very capable defencive player. I like having him on the team for that reason. He should not be playing every day, nor should he be batting 1st, or 2nd. He should be 7th or 8th, when he plays, which should be sparingly (e.g. to give a regular some rest). JMHO
  10. Wow. I'm drawing a complete blank on Lundstedt. I don't recall ever hearing of him. I guess I'm just getting old. :(
  11. I gotta ask, why is that so obvious? He still looks like a damn good prospect to me. He had a bad day. He's still really green. He's got a great, and I mean great curve, a good fastball, and a decent cutter. When he has trouble locating his curve, they sit on his fastball. How is that different than most ML pitchers? IMO, the jury is still out on Hill. Too soon to make a call. Not so obvious to me. I recommend you give him a little more development. I like that Hendry decided to keep him.
  12. Do we have a shot at Houston? In a word..., no.
  13. It's gotta be Tim Hosley or George Mitterwald. I guess it could be Larry Cox or Steve Swisher, but I think they were a little later, IIRC.
  14. From all the Cub fans that fill up their stadium 7-9 times a season.
  15. are you also registered at Cards Talk...your id seems to be there also Indeed I am.
  16. If you're talking money, the Cardinals (a healthy team) are better than the Sox, and I would bet on them. If the Cardinals don't get healthy, then the Sox could take them. The Sox pitching staff is very deep, and a Cardinal lineup without a healthy Rolen, Walker, Sanders, and Molina, is just not as good, IMO. Optimally, the Red Sox would win it all again, but that's just me because the Red Sox have always been my second favourite team, after the Cubs.
  17. That's really not a fair distinction to make. Why not? I think it is VERY difficult (sometimes impossible) for any fan (including myself) to be objective when dealing with a subject that directly involves one of their favourite players, on (or) their favourite team. I'm not slamming PujolsPower, simply making a comment about human nature, in general, and how it is manifested in sports fans.
  18. Especially since you live behind enemy lines, huh? I used to live in Saint Louis - ugh! God, I used get crap incessantly from all the Redbird fans at work. What a drag. Is that 'Elvis is Alive' museum still out there?
  19. Ha, ha, ha,...that's kind of funny. Not picking on you, but when you have a handle of 'PujolsPower', saying you are objective does not quite mean too much. I can certainly relate to your partisanship, no problem there. You undoubtedly want Pujols to win any accolade he can get, so really, it doesn't mean much when you write that Pujols is your pick to win MVP. I think that if Lee continues his recent tail-off, Pujols should win. However, if Lee picks it back up again and gives his numbers a boost back up near where they were in mid-July, he is the obvious choice. Now, as far as predicting what the voters will do, I will pick Pujols because his numbers are close enough, his team will make the playoffs, yada, yada, yada.... The Gold Glove awards are meaningless, IMO, because it usually is a 50/50 shot as to whether or not the best defencive player ever gets the award. My prediction: Pujols wins both MVP and GG.
  20. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> I agree. The Cubs problem is not 'heart'. IMO, they lack real talent in the bullpen (a stopper), and they have had some performance issues. These things can be measured, and improved upon. Hopefully, the talent will be available this off-season, either through the free-agent market, trading, or on the farm, so Hendry can re-tool. Sheesh, 'he has no heart' is easy to say, but difficult to gauge or measure. Really, since none of you guys likely actually know any of these players personally, I really don't understand how you can say that they have no heart. You really don't know, and it seems to me that you're just guessing. Their poise could be questioned because of their lack of execution (e.g. pitchers failing to cover first, Barrett blowing the run-down), but that's on the coaches/management, IMO. They either don't stress fundamentals enough, or tolerate poor fundamentals.
  21. As of today, yes, just as Bonds was the MVP last year even though his team did not make the playoffs. Without Lee, the Cubs aren't anywhere close to making the playoffs. Right now he leads the NL in BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS. He's tied for the league lead in HR's. He's third in RBI and second in runs. He's also tied for the lead in doubles as well. As long as he is leading in those categories, I still say he's the MVP. I disagree with the Bonds analogy to last year. In 2004, Bonds had an OPS of 1.442, with Pujols finishing second at 1.088. That is a pretty significant difference. Also, Pujols played on a team with three MVP candidates, which split the vote some, and made him seem less valuable considering the offense that surrounded him. D Lee has an OPS of 1.129 compared to Pujols at 1.052. Lee's stats aren't that much better than Pujols' stats, and Pujols isn't surrounded by the same offensive production this year as he was last year, in fact, Ramirez is posting better numbers than any Cardinals hitter (besides Pujols). If the season ended today, I think Pujols is the MVP. If your team doesn't make the playoffs, I think you have to have far-superior stats to be the MVP. Besides that, PujolsPower is a Cardinals fan (surprise, surprise). It's still too early to call, IMO.
  22. I have noticed that this year's Cubs seem to play better in the big ball parks - LA, Miami, San Diego, and struggle a little more in the small parks. I am not sure if it is coincidence, and I have done no research on it, that is just my recollection.
  23. If Baker continues to fill out the lineup card, and not put Ramirez batting after Lee, Lee will not see enough hittable pitches to win anything. I would not count Lee out yet....but he does appear to be fading a bit.
  24. That's kind of a sad comment right there..., I mean, really, this guy is supposed to be the manager. Wow...., just plain wow. I'm with you.
  25. IMO, Smith was far and away the best defencive SS I've seen. Better than Larkin, and yes, better than Ripkin. Early in Smith's career, he could even hit his weight, and he was a little guy. He was popular, had endurance, and continued to play great defence for almost all of his career. He got in the HOF as much because of his popularity, as anything else. It is called a Hall of Fame, not a Hall of Stats. He was a famous player, and played defence better than most everyone. I don't have a problem with him there. Oh yeah..., Santo belongs, most assuredly.
