  1. Barney IS the bees knees. All I hear is folks talking him down, but you know what, all he does is go out and perform. Sure, he's no Ryne Sandberg, but he's pretty darned good.
  2. Anybody find video of Vanden Bosch late hit on Forte?
  3. The truth hurts, and boys will be boys, eh? Please present your evidence that everyone in the football program new that Sandusky was a pedophile, Gus. I never said "everyone" *new* (sic), however, it is obvious that enough of the people who were in a position to take corrective action did know, and failed miserably in performing their obligations, as well as being decent human beings. I do not think that it is far-fetched to say that there most certainly was a knowledge & rumours throughout the department. Sure, innuendo is not enough to infer guilt, I will agree with that, but folks berating the sign-holder & abusing him does not bolster a case for sympathy for these guys. It just makes them look bad, IMHO.

  5. I apologize if this has already been posted. This is an excellent article. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7233704/the-brutal-truth-penn-state
  6. I am lost on how they can play out this season. It kind of trivializes the victims' suffering, if you ask me. JMHO.
  7. Ya think? Are you a student of human nature? The Cardinals are a Cubs fan's Darth Vader. It is part of my very being to hate them. It fits as nicely as a comfortable old shoe. That's too bad, sincerely. I actually have a great admiration for LaRussa. Geez, all the guy ever did was win wherever he managed. What a jerk! First ballot HOFer, no doubt about it! I just wish the Cubs could get somebody who could get the most from the least that he could get. No, don't go anywhere, please. I am always eager to learn what's going on in other organisations (especially the hated Cardinals).
  8. You cited ONE game. Listen, you can pick apart the series, and say that they were just lucky, or they won in spite of him, but what about the White Sox? What about Oakland. Third most wins in MLB history? Why am I even arguing with you? Clearly, you wish to ignore all the successes, and seem to opine that the man has enjoyed Forrest Gump serendipity as a baseball manager. He has enjoyed these successes - these are facts. Undeniable facts. He has won everywhere he has been. It is what it is. I am done here.
  9. One game does not a career make. The dude is HOF manager, and that's not even an argument. Hate dislike or disagree with him, but you absolutely cannot argue with his results.
  10. I think this is fairly accurate. I have to swim upstream on LaRussa. I like him. He's fiery, competitive, and all he ever does is win, wherever he manages. WTH is not to like? You don't have to like him personally, but I highly admire his body of work, and would love to have a guy who gets his type of results manage the Cubs.
  11. Castro is a keeper. Essentially, he is untouchable at this point unless you just absolutely ream the other team talent-wise. Castro's ceiling is so high, it's just not smart to move him, IMO.
  12. By whom? It's been pretty much the scuttlebutt all season long that this would be his last in Saint Louis. According to the article, he gave them the word in August. This was totally expected.
  13. Very well put Vance. Sandberg is not my favourite Cubs player, but I do really like him. I agree completely with what you wrote - it makes perfect sense.
  14. There is no way the Red Sox get anybody from the major league roster. It would be setting a new precedent, and if Selig decides, that's not a decision he's going to make, IMO. The Red Sox are being completely unreasonable. The Cubs have made an offer of compensation that is more than fair. if this goes to Selig, the Red Sox will get screwed. JMHO
  15. Wow, how gracious.
  16. I could not agree more. But on the subject of work ethic, (I'm talking players here) there are many who subsist on skill alone, and when their skills start to decline (with age), they cannot continue at a high level, because they do not have the work ethic it takes to maintain it. I will not name specific players, however I am sure that you can think of a few where this applies. Now, with managers, I would say that LaRussa, for one, has a tremendous work ethic. The guy is ALWAYS on it. Always. Others - not so much. Your example of Lou is spot on, although at that stage in his career, he can be forgiven, somewhat, but management should have acted sooner, IMO. In any event, I still believe that it is an important part of the makeup of candidates, and to ignore it is not something you would want to do. Sure, most of these guys will have a strong work ethic, but some will be better than others, and I would be willing to bet that those stronger guys in that area, are generally more successful. It is not meaningless. Not necessarily the most important factor, but a player nonetheless.
  17. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of professional athletes work really hard at their job. Doesn't make them management material. And the meaningless comment was both about the fact that he was a damn good player (should not enter into discussion) and that his managers said he worked hard. I never said that it made him management material, however a good work ethic is not meaningless, or is it to you? In fatc, to state that it is "meaningless" in the scheme of things doesn't really display a mjor amount of business intelleigence. I'm just sayin'/. Pretty much any candidate seriously considered for the job is going to have a good work ethic. Tim, I am am not going to argue that necessarily, but I would never go as far as to render it meaningless.

  19. Ya think? Who wouldn't? God, I am so utterly sick of Saint Louis winning that trophy, it is depressing. sigh... again... I have seen them get there too many times, and I am only 49! Call me impatient, but seriously, I want a Cubs World Series Title before I die!!!! Not too much to ask, I think?
  20. Just like Mike Quade Except Quade has quite a bit more experience. This is why he got the job over Sandberg in the first place.
  21. 1. Meaningless Huh? So, when you hire people (if you ever have), do you try to find the most lazy sloth you can to fill the position? Hardly meaningless. I work pretty damn hard at eating food but that doesn't make me a chef, knowhaduhmean I know exactly what you mean, however, it still does not render a good work ethic meaningless..., ever. But your comment is completely meaningless in this context.
