  1. I agree with you. No blasphemy here. I never liked Harry Carey. I didn't hate him, but his calls were sometimes like this: "There's a line drive,...ground ball,..no,..pop..., uh, he struck out." Put it this way, the Cubs have had better announcers than Harry. Some were much better.
  2. He already has a job. Yes, but that should not discourage the Cubs from going after him if Dusty were gone.
  3. Not likely. My dad went to series vs. Tigers in '45 - lucky dog.
  4. Dusty Baker is one of the most stubborn folks I've ever seen. He will refuse to throw in the towel on something he believes should work, even though all evidence illustrates the failure. :x
  5. Yea that's the scary part.. I dont know what it is but guessing 80% of them score, one of the worst if not worst in the majors.. OK, that explains it, thanks.
  6. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane... Forgot completely about them going out there to access the clubhouse, but when I read that, it brought those memories back. Cincinnati, Saint Louis & Pittsburgh come to mind first as places with those golf carts. Do you recall Garagiola & Kubeck doing Saturday games? Seemed like the upper deck was only opened on opening day, and on holiday weekends (e.g. Memorial Day) Vince and Good Kid were the best. 25 HRs was pretty darn good too. Sometimes they would finish the game the next time that team was in town for an odd kind of doubleheader. Those old movie theatre uni's were bizarre, especially on a 90-degree day.
  7. Joe Girardi
  8. Me too.
  9. St Louis pen lowest WHIP in NL lowest BAA in NL lowest OPSA in NL 3rd best ERA in NL not bad for "aren't real good. Not real bad - kind of average" btw the WHIP, BAA and OPS are all lower than last year's pen and the ERA is just .05 higher. Wow  My comments were made based on watching them throw (about eight or nine games) this season. They have not been real impressive in the games I watched. I am very surprised to see those statistics in direct opposition to those observations. Not bad, indeed.
  10. Marmol has absolutely nasty stuff. I hope nobody jumps off the wagon when he has that day when he can't find the strike zone. I mean, sometimes Z's stuff has so much movement on it, he has trouble hitting his spots and walks too many guys. Regardless, it is nice to see the system produce. =D>
  11. IMO, if Dusty wants to stay, Hendry will sign him. Hendry's already said many times that Dusty is "his guy", and just recently reiterated it during that interview on national TV (Fox, I think). As much as many folks here would like to see Dusty gone, it's only going to happen if one of two things happen: 1) Dusty decides to leave. 2) Hendry is gone.. Again..., JMO from hearing and reading everything since Hendry first went after Dusty, until now. Hendry has been very consistent and unwavering in his support for Dusty, like it or not.
  12. That's how I see it too. The only thing is, if I buy a car and turns out to be a lemon I will do whatever I can to get rid of it and get something more reliable. The Cubs just try to make lemonade. That's what they're going to have to do: hope some team needs a lefty and will pick up most, if not all of the contract. I'll give Hendry a big pat on the back if he finds another team to take Rusch and pay any of his contract. What do you give Hendry for giving Rusch that contract? I think the Cubs could put Rusch in the back of the pen. He has the chance of being respectable if he pitches an inning or two at a time. I agree. He'll be pitching for specific situations. One or two LH batters, then he's out of there for Howry or Eyre.
  13. I'd take all five of those guys on my staff any day, and twice on Sunday, and I would be very happy. IMO, Schmidt got screwed out of the CYA a couple of years ago.
  14. I always thought Calero had good stuff...just needed some seasoning.
  15. Those are constant? Baker's managed for what...3 1/2 years? Hendry's been GM for about that same time. MacPhail's been in Cubs management for maybe 10 years?? (That's a guess) And the Tribune has owned the Cubs for 25 years or so? So that means out of nearly a hundred years of futility, one or more of those guys have only been involved in a quarter of that maximum....how does that make it constant? constant hyperbole

  17. Heck, at this point I'd be happy to see them play .500 the rest of the way. That would at least show some improvement. Problem is, I just do think that's going to happen. 61-101 is looking more like a realistic outcome...., maybe even worse than that.
  18. It's simple - value each and every at bat, as if it is the TEAM's last at bat. Play like a team, hit like a team. Show some patience. It's called situational hitting, and the Cubs absolutely suck at doing it. It is a philosophical approach that is just not promoted in the organization. This organization promotes those who swing away, and swing some more. Murton Lee & Walker are our patient hitters, and they are products of other farm systems......players come in and quickly adopt the Cub swinging philosophy because it is easy to do, you know, swing away, get a hit. Hitters love to hit, walking is what happens when the pitcher is so bad they're not even close.
  19. Both tough guys - Baker a traditional street tough type, and Guillen is a real scrappy fella. Baker has the size and reach on him, but Guillen is a mean little prick, and would fight dirty. I would take Guillen in a ten round spilt decision. Oh..., you were talking managerially??? Guillen is a better manager too.
  20. first of all, rusch has NO upside. none. secondly, you're kidding yourself if you think the cubs can get a "decent" prospect for a guy that would be w/o a team if not for the cubs. he's old and he has a 7.29 era. the cubs aren't getting crap for him. Don't forget a multi million dollar contract through next year. Don't forget a career 4.96 ERA. He'll have a little value because he's a lefty. If he were a righty he'd have no value at all. Remember his absolutely horrid year in Milwaukee? The Cubs took a chance on him, and it really helped them out....for awhile anyway. I agree with the statement that this guy has to be moved to mop-up, but I would not DFA him or trade him just yet. Let's get somebody else to start NOW, please.
  21. They are completely clueless against soft-tossers, and if it is a soft-tossing lefty, fuhhhgetuhboutit! It's like watching the same bad movie over and over again, and hoping it will be better the next time you watch it... :(
  22. I'm not sayin' that Pujols is innocent, but I am not ready to bust out the torches like they did for Frankenstein's monster based on the thin evidence (if you want to call it that) being made available. And yes, the trainer is a co-worker that you work closely with. The analogy is valid. Just because the trainer might use 'roids, or even suggest that you use them, does not automatically translate into you using them. He may or may not have ever suggest them to pujols, and if he did, Pujols may have told him to bugger off. We don't have enough information to convict Pujols. I hate the Cardinals as much as anyone, maybe more than anyone else, but I will not readily bash this guy until some evidence more substantive than this is made available. This is just me, but that's how I feel.
  23. Agreed, guilt by association doesn't work. If my co-worker is a druggie, but nobody found out until after he left, does that mean I am too? I mean, I worked with him on many projects, sometimes quite a bit of overtime..... You see, sometimes, a working relationship never goes deeper than professionals working together. Burn him..., burn the witch!!! I don't like this climate..., I don't like it at all.
  24. Emotions getting the better of you? I feel the same way, but logically, you have to hold on to Rusch until the deadline. He's a lefty, with some upside. Hold him until then, and trade him in the eleventh hour for a decent prospect. Who cares if the Cubs pick up that salary (or most of it), just get something for him. Believe me, there will be takers out there for Rusch. To DFA him would be a mistake - bad business, if you will.
  25. I just think Isringhausen is on the down side of his career. A pretty good career, but past his prime nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, he's still got some decent years left in him, but he's no longer the closer hes was a few years ago. He'll probably move to middle relief. They should be looking for a front-line closer real soon. The middle relievers for Saint Louis aren't real good. Not real bad - kind of average, IMO, and that, plus declining Isringhausen is going to cost them games that they normally have won in 2004-05. JMO.
