  1. The only way I like it is if it's for multiple years. Given how likely it Kimbrel is a bust this season, a 1-year deal would be utterly stupid. Guy averaged 97 on the heater last year. He struggled in the 2nd half but there was no indication he just got old and bad. Let me reiterate, I don’t want a Melancon/Jansen type deal. I’d be fine with a 1 year guaranteed then player options for 1-2 years for him to stay if he wants or like a 3/45 type deal with an opt out. Why would a deal with player opt outs be better for the club?
  2. It all comes down to the contract for me if we commit multiple years I won’t like it The only way I like it is if it's for multiple years. 3. Believe me, I'm dreaming it. But I think at this point Morrow is less likely to pitch in a Cubs uniform than Kimbrel.
  4. Strumpf is an interesting pick and certainly not a reach where we took him, but there are some definite yellow flags there. Regressed big-time this season, not much of a defender or baserunner so it's hit or bust with him.
  5. 2017. Not that long ago. To be fair, they didn't exactly reach on the two pitchers they selected that year. Just bad picks in retrospect. Yeah those are not at all the same. Those two were picked right where they were supposed to, it just didn't work out. Abbot wasn't in anybody's top 100 that I remember, for starters. Little wasn't ranked as high as he was drafted either. Pretty much Lange was the only on who wasn't a reach. Irrespective, their track record with college pitchers is truly grisly. They really need to try another tack.
  6. There's a stages of grief reaction every time the Cubs reach for these mediocre college arms dozens of spots higher than they're ranked. It goes "Maybe they're smarter than everyone else" to "He must be an underslot pick, they're saving for later" to "They just suck at drafting pitchers."
  7. I could see Kimbrel getting about $34m ($8m for the rest of this season, about $26m for ‘20-21). But I think that’s still too rich for PTR’s blood. I’m not convinced signing Kimbrel gets us into the postseason this year, because we have some other significant issues. But it still makes more sense than trading prospects to rent a closer, because you’d have Kimbrel for two more years. Two years with a lot of money coming off the books and, theoretically, money coming in from the Sinclair deal with the devil.
  8. It's all just deck chairs on the Titanic. Keep shuffling the bad relievers hoping to get a few decent games out of them before they suck, then swap them out. Amaya, Hoerner or(and) Marqeuz for a mediocre rent-a-closer pretty much a given at this point.
  9. What a flucking disaster. Every damn game the bullpen costs us now counts just as much as one in October. For a GM as generally smart as he is, Theo has been astonishingly bad at constructing a bullpen. Even the WS team needed a lopsided rental trade to hang on, and at that Joe was basically using a 1-man bullpen by the end. Sure Ricketts' cheapness was a huge problem this offseason, but Theo has had ample chances to alleviate the problem and never done it.
  10. One would hope Davis starts tomorrow after 15 innings today, but I doubt it.
  11. Should be a TayDay day, as he seems to be Yu’s personal catcher now.
  12. Carl pitched 1 consecutive non disastrous outing so...maybe him? Yeah, no courting disaster there.
  13. Who's even the theoretical closer now? Kintzler? The way Joe likes to use Cishek as a multi-inning security blanket I can't imagine it will be him most nights.
  14. I actually thought he looked good out there. Everything was around the plate. Velocity 97-98. Both homers were off good pitches, and Ozuna should have been called out to end the game on the 1-2 pitch.
  15. How many games does the 2019 team win without him?
  16. Reasons not to move Baez off SS: 1. He's producing top-3 MVP caliber level 2 years running. 2. His defense has improved dramatically at SS once he was left alone there. 3. His offense has improved dramatically since he stopped moving around so much. 4. He makes plays at SS Russell can't make. Far stronger arm. 5. His most outstanding defensive trait (that arm) is wasted at 2B. 6. Baez is a lock to play every day, Russell is not. That means if you put Russell back at SS Javy has to move every day contingent on whether Russell starts. 7. There's absolutely no reason Russell should be a default regular, based on his offensive output the past two seasons. 8. Russell is a domestic abuser who sent child support payments in coins just to prove what a pile he is, and should have been released. 9. You'd have to be crazy to move Baez off SS. Seriously. Reasons to move Baez off SS: 1. Guys shouldn't lose their jobs due to injury, or suspension for being a domestic abuser who sent child support payments in coins. Or sucking.
  17. Winning games without those two is good though for the long term outlook as you can reasonably assume both will be better (perhaps much, much better). I'm not sure it's reasonable to assume that in either case, but Bryant especially. Given his injury history I think it's no sure thing he gets back to his old self anytime soon. Rizzo seems a sure bet to at least be better, but his numbers were down last year and while he's probably not on the downhill yet, there are a fair number of miles on the tires. As for the Q, he was never the TORP some tried to pimp him as at the time of the trade. But he was better than what we've gotten from him so far - a solid #3, maybe a borderline #2. He's overperforming in his last 2 starts but maybe this is just an overall reversion to the mean - he was certainly due to.
  18. Especially if it meant Almora as an everyday player is permanent ashcanned.
  19. What? They have shown him three times in the dugout on a mobile phone. Is that a joke?
  20. I don't see a better lineup against righties than one with Descalso in it right now.
  21. Unique strategy the Cubs have employed with the bullpen, targeting guys who neither throw really hard or have good command.
  22. Don’t discount Girardi as a possibility. If the Cubs decide to totally scapegoat Maddon and want to do a culture 180, he fits the bill.
  23. Absent a better lefty option I'd as soon have seen Webster get that spot. The key pieces here are Kintzler and Brach. Both are on the roster because of guaranteed money, period. If they're both bad - which is highly possible - the Cubs are going to be on the clock in terms of cutting bait on one or both of them.
  24. Word is Joe plans to DH him tomorrow.
