  1. Heyward took about six steps before that last swing.
  2. Lucroy doesn't have to be All-star Lucroy - he just has to be better than Taylor Davis. I don't know why his framing numbers have tanked (that seems very odd to me) but overall still a good handler of pitchers and even if he hits a little bit, he's still the best option on the table.
  3. 1 hit in 17 IP in his last 3 starts. He's warm.
  4. 0 or 1 BB in 6 straight starts. Leads the Cubs in IP and (obviously) strikeouts. Among the league leaders in Ks and hard contact %. At this point it's really only HRs to LH that's keeping Yu from being a legit #1 starter. If he keeps using the splitter and gets those under control, he's the ace of the staff.
  5. Yeah, that was a strange call by Montero. If Edwards wasn’t a rookie he’d probably have shaken him off.
  6. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2019 Chicago Cubs.
  7. Don't forget giving away Maldonado saves the Ricketts a few hundred thousand in salary.
  8. Counterpoint: Chapman’s 8 out save almost lost us the WS. maddon's decision to use him in game 6 is what almost cost us. the 8 out save couldn't possibly have been more needed. Very, very much this. I had no issue with the Game 5 save. But if Joe hadn't needlessly used him in Game 6 he would have gone into Game 7 on two days rest and I think he'd have been fine. That and pulling Hendricks while he was cruising and unhittable in game 7 almost cost us the series.
  9. .213 BAA now 3rd best among qualified NL starters. 8 swing-and-misses on the 4-seamer today.
  10. Darvish: 1 BB and 21 Ks in 18.2 IP in July (12 hits). 9 walks and 53 Ks in 48 IP since June 1.
  11. All of the geniuses who authoritatively declared the Darvish contract the worst ever have gone curiously silent.
  12. You can say “I reject your reality and substitute my own” all you want, but that’s how things are. Not rejecting your reality at all. I accept that that may very well be Schwarber's perceived value. I just disagree with that valuation. Fair enough. One could counter with the fact that Schwarber has 3 WAR in his career, and Merrifield had 5.5 last season (and 2.6 so far this season).
  13. Not attacking your point, but it's funny to me how many have written off (or are in the process of writing off) Schwarber, a pedigreed 26 year old with a career .340 wOBA/111 wRC+, and now he's being discussed as not enough to bring back a guy who at 26 hadn't reached the majors and was putting up a .308 wOBA and 81 RC+ in the Texas league. You can say “I reject your reality and substitute my own” all you want, but that’s how things are.
  14. The starting point for Merrifield would probably be Schwarber and Hoerner, and that wouldn't be enough. That's not happening.
  15. If they trade Vic, they damn well better get something pretty good. He can hit, is a switch-hitter decent from both sides, and his overall D and framing have really improved this season.
  16. Did Yu at least get some appreciation from the fans today, I hope? Apart from the HRs, he’s basically pitching like an ace since May 15. His peripherals are outstanding. Hopefully he could be in line for a killer 2nd half.
  17. Chatwood had plenty of 97s and 98s earlier when he was short-relieving.
  18. I just think it's silly to blame the gun, a classic fan rationalization. Was the gun off on his first appearance too, on the road? Pedro Strop must have a squad of slow guns following him everywhere he goes. As I said - mildly concerning. Not a huge deal at this point that Kimbrel's velocity is down - there are valid reasons why it might be. But blaming the gun is something the likes of Brett Taylor would do.
  19. Sure, blame the gun. It's probably bullshlt, but human nature to want to feel better.
  20. More 93-94 from Kimbrel tonight. I would describe that as mildly concerning at this stage.
  21. Is that a normal thing in a team option? That doesn’t sound common. Since our team doctor has a 3 star Yelp rating it makes sense for us to do this. I would imagine "qualified doctor" would be anyone agreed to by both sides at the time.
  22. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
  23. Just for the record he's not almost 32 - he just turned 31 last week.
