Don’t want to overstate this or anything but I know for a fact the Cubs were extremely high on Amaya from Day 1 As they were on Torres, Jimenez, Cease and Paredes.

I think they could always afford to add a $3-4M guy like Brach, but they had to wait for all the pitchers who were actually good to get signed by the teams actually trying to improve before a guy like Brach would sign for their budget.

Life after Contreras really should be Amaya, because I think he has a chance to be a star. But my gut feeling is we're going to give him away in another short-sighted trade for a reliever. Mind you, Hedges would be a good get. He's an elite overall defender and a top-level framer, and with his power should be at least average offensively for the position. But I don't really see the incentive for SD to move him unless they get quite a lot back.

I like Hedges. Would love to get more than that for Bote though, even if we are dumping Duensing. I still feel like there's a way to deal Duensing/Kintzler and Chatwood to someone like the Marlins or Royals or Mariners, teams in a rebuild who can take on a contract like that and buy low. What possible incentive could there be for those teams? Just because you have money doesn’t mean you’re looking for a way to piss it away. You’d still have to give up good prospects to unload any of those contracts.

If Chatwood gave us a 2017 John Lackey season, how would you feel? I can’t imagine a more optimistic outcome. It's easy to imagine a more optimistic outcome, because he delivered it as recently as 2017. Is it likely? No - Chatwood was really, really broken last season. But if he's fixed, unlikely as that is, there's no reason why in theory he won't be fixed all the way. Which would be better than Lackey '17. -
That’s basically how Dierkes (spelling?) Got MLB Trade Rumors going I believe. He threw a bunch of horsefeathers out and got a thing or two right that drove traffic then just turned in to an aggregator. This would’ve been early to mid 2000’s. Chris Cotilo also got a job based on twitter. Not sure whether he had actual sources though. Can't compare Cotillo to these joke accounts. He was a kid but he was actually talking to people in the industry and posting real news.

They couldn’t even afford Chavez at 4 million a year. What makes you think not picking up Hamels’ option would have priced them in on Harper or Machado?

FWIW Marlin Bystro, the supposed ITK over at PSD, finally posted and said that he's heard everything we're reading is true - Theo has zero to spend and would need to dump salary even to sign a middle reliever. Usual grain of salt.

Kelvin Herrera, Brad Brach, and Oliver Perez. #HotStove Regardless of the stupid cat. Oliver Perez would be kind of interesting.... he was better than both Miller and Britton last year and he would definitely be cheaper. Perez and Allen as additions to the pen wouldn't be the worst moves. Allen is probably my realistic upside hope for this hemorrhoid of an offseason, though I've seen no reports actually indicating the Cubs are interested. -

Look, Bryce and Bryant are besties, legitimately. It's not trolling for them to be goofy rich guys too young to have all that money showing themselves having a great time. Is he supposed to pretend he and Bryant aren't buddies for fear people will take it the wrong way?

That’s not the most ridiculous proposition in the world. IF he’s healthy enough to pitch 180+ innings and IF he performs just a bit better than his career averages, he’ll be a top 10 Cy Young candidate. It’s not real likely, but it’s better than a lottery ticket. It’s entirely possible he pitches like a very good pitcher this year but I doubt he touches 180+ innings. He only threw 40 last year, he probably won’t go more than 150. I could see him getting starts skipped early on with the off days or a 6-man rotation/Monty/Mills take a start of his at points through the year to manage innings. Obviously you can't assume everything will be fine with Yu's elbow, given the history there. But if in fact his elbow is OK, I think the fact that Darvish only threw 40 innings this season makes it more likely he'll manage a full load of innings next season, not less. His arm will be very fresh and if there are no issues with the elbow (or new health concerns that pop up) there's no reason he shouldn't get 30+ starts and 180+ IP.

I wonder how much of this stuff (some of which was already taking place) the Cubs were aware of when they traded for Russell, and if it was any concern to them at the time.

Maybe I'm giving Theo too much credit, but at like to think he feels like he's really sold his soul putting his name behind everything that's going on with this organization right now.

As gross as the Addy thing is, for me this is worse. Sinclair is an abomination to objective journalism, irrespective of your personal politics. TheyI'e actively doing serious damage to our country every day. I don't suspect Theo will walk away from all this - he's making a tremendous amount of money. But he has to be pretty pissed off with the current state of affairs, I would imagine.

I've lived and died with this team for literally my entire life since I was old enough to know what baseball was. Suffered through 84 and 03 and everything else. Cried like a baby when we won the WS. But this? If it's true, that may be the straw that broke the camel's back for me. It really does feel like winning the WS was some sort of pact with the devil. I didn't think anything could ever make me stop being a Cub fan at this point. But Sinclair? That might just do it.
