  1. I wouldn't mind not losing Pinyero, who's not a complete non-prospect, but we would have had to expose him this Winter anyway.
  2. Pinyero and Soto for Haren. Soto is an afterthought, and while Pinyero is a modest prospect, I doubt we would have protected him the the Rule 5 draft. With 2 hours left, I find myself more invested on what we don't do (give up Baez) than what we do.
  3. Passable 5th starter with presumably minimal cost. I don't hate it.
  4. Maybe the big move is going to be taking a flyer on Bud Norris or Vance Worley.
  5. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 2m2 minutes ago More on Kimbrel: Now told #Yankees’ talks for him broke down yesterday and have not revived today. #Marlins’ Capps an option, as others say.
  6. I think an obvious problem is that no one outside of Cub fans assigns much value to Castro at this point - he's likely bordering on a salary dump. Especially with the Pads desperate to cut payroll, that's a big issue. Maybe we can figure something out to get Benoit from SD. He's still throwing hard despite his age, and he's been terrific the last two years. Ross and Benoit for Castro, Underwood and McKinney might be realistic if we take Gyarko.
  7. Hunter is kind of the Ian Kennedy of the RP class. Certainly not a difference maker 9th inning guy - at best, he'd probably be our 4th best reliever. If the cost is extremely low, not a big bad pickup.
  8. Marisnick is hardly a marquee name, but the big advantage he has over Castro is salary. Both are subpar offensive players, but Castro is both worse this year and has at times been better than Marisnick. If they both made the same money the Pads would probably prefer Castro, but as is - who knows? Appel vs. Edwards is another tough one. They were rated roughly equally going into the season. Appel has flat-out struggled. Edwards had shoulder problems, got shifted to the pen and has a hideous walk rate - along with the 2nd-best OBA in the minors and a ton of Ks. Again, hard to say who the Pads would value higher here. On balance, I think a Cubs offer of Edwards, Castro and either Underwood or McKinney - certainly if both - would win out. But they might have to either pay half of Castro's remaining contract or take Gyarko.
  9. What difference does Upton being young make when he's a FA after the season?
  10. I mean, it's a semantical nitpick, but Ross and Upton are a pair of 3+ win players, and Ross is controlled for several years. It'd take a decent size quality and quantity from the Cubs to get them. That seems pretty 'big' to me. That said, I'd prefer Ross/Kimbrel to Ross/Upton, myself. Holy crap, that guy thinks Ross and Upton wouldn't be big? It would be substantial, sure. But in the context of some kind of brewing blockbuster no, I don't think it's close. Even if you don't believe Ross' elbow is a grenade with the pin pulled, he's a mid-rotation starter, not a #1 or even a #2. And Upton, while he's not as bad as he has been the last two months (which is almost Castro bad) he's not an elite bat. He's also a rental - exactly the sort of player Theo said he wasn't going to pay big for. This isn't the sort of big deal you'd even consider including Baez in.
  11. I don't know what a really big deal with SD would be if Kimbrel isn't in it. Ross and Upton sure isn't it.
  12. Theo needs to hold strong and be ready to walk away. I think Preller needs a big deal more than he does, and there aren't as many potential buyers for him as there were 48 hours ago. Baez needs to be 100% off the table.
  13. I can't imagine SD possibly taking that deal. Maybe if we take Gyorko and pay most of Castro's salary.
  14. Could be Iwakuma. Every team could use a guy whose name means "Rock Bear".
  15. ChicagoCubsOnline.com If taking Jerko's contract means keeping Underwood sure, I'd do that. I'm not sure SD would.
  16. If the basic framework was something like Castro, Edwards, McKinney and Underwood for Ross, Kimbrel and Venable I'd probably swallow hard and take the deal. But I have a suspicion the Padres could do better.
  17. If it means "don't bother asking for Baez, because we're not trading him for anything you have" I'm all in favor of it.
  18. Do other teams still look at Edwards as a top pitching prospect? That'd be pretty sweet if they do. Really interested to see the Cubs' lineup tonight.. I think he'd still be valued as a good prospect - some of his peripherals are terrific, and he's reportedly hitting 96-97 out of the pen. But I don't think he'd be viewed as an elite, centerpiece guy in a big deal like this - he's been moved to the pen, had shoulder trouble and struggles to throw strikes. I'd be thrilled to see Castro and Edwards for Ross and Kimbrel, but we'd have to include more - probably much more. Maybe add McKinney and Underwood.
  19. You have to wonder if Theo is worried that a long-term benching of Castro is problematic - concerns that he could be a cancer if he's not starting. Otherwise not much incentive to dump him for scraps now.
  20. Oh well - once Joe Blanton came off the board, the dream was dead anyway - anyone else would have been a hollow second-best...
  21. I don't think I've ever been this torn at a trade deadline before. I'd like to see a move, but the two likelest options seem to be trading Castro at the low ebb of his value, or trading Baez. And I really don't want to see either of those things happen.
  22. Upton and Ross about to go somewhere - both pulled in the 6th. Given that's about what the price for Baez might be, I find myself hoping it's Houston. Edit: scratch that, it was Kemp switched out. F/U Twitter.
  23. Don't trade Baez, much less for Ross. That's a move that could well bite the organization in the ass in a big way. The kid has phenomenal talent, he's shown both the willingness and ability to adjust, and he's 22. That's a guy you build around.
  24. I just don't see the point in waiting very long with Javy. He was red-hot before he got hurt, and he's clearly come back in good form. What are we protecting with Castro, exactly? He's been either the very worst or almost the very worst hitting eligible position player in baseball this season.
