    Wood is done. Problem is that I don't see his stuff playing in the bullpen. So when Wada is up next week, can you really afford to carry two deadweight ex-starters in the bullpen?

    I would argue the McKinney promotion should have happened weeks ago, but apparently he was being disciplined for a lax attitude about defense in ST. If he can continue to rake in AA at his age, he really has to be taken seriously as an elite-ish prospect.

    Bryant has a BABIP of .435 and Russell .436. That's a bit unnerving.

    Baez had a higher walk rate at all of AA, AAA and MLB last year than Castro has ever had in the majors. But by all means, stay with the jokes.

    Looks like we officially found the fastest gun in the minor leagues.

    Schwarber is going to test the Cubs' resolve to try him as a catcher, because as a hitter he's as ML-ready as Bryant was a year ago. I suspect the experiment to make him a full-time catcher ends after this season, and he's the guy we're checking off Xs on the calendar for service time next April. He's a starting LF who can be a third catcher on the roster and a lefty power bat with patience and high contact rate - that's plenty to be excited about.

    If Soler strained his hammy running out that double, I think that would be an iron-clad case for instituting the designated runner.

    I think the Cubs will call up either Russell or Baez by June for sure. Both of them can help the club with baserunning and defense, even if they don't hit right away. I'm sure the preference would be for Javy to get off strong at Iowa and get the first call, but I don't think Super Two will impact the decision on Russell one way or the other.

    I'd like to see a little more detail on that before I start breathing a sigh of relief. It's certainly better than announcing a torn labrum or something, but that's very unspecific.

    Maybe a little unnecessary added pressure batting Bryant cleanup in his first game, but I suppose in the big picture it matters very little either way.

    The first "clean" X-ray was probably taken on a disposable camera from CVS.

    What a shock that Olt's wrist was fractured and it didn't show up until Bryant was clear of service time issues. Who could have predicted.

    "Nothing real positive" according to Maddon. Guy has a history of shoulder trouble so I'm expecting the worst. Wouldn't be surprised to see that be Bryant's roster spot, though I don't think it'll happen before Saturday, and more likely Monday.
