I like the Britton move. He has a very good arm, and he's still young enough to show some development. Almost no risk with a modest and not completely far-fetched reward.

I think the smartest move is to give Olt the chance to prove he has some semblance of value by letting him start for those weeks, assuming he shows anything at all in spring training.

There's no way in Hell Bryant is the opening day 3B - this has zero impact on that. What it possibly does suggest is that the Cubs are committed to giving Bryant every chance to prove he can stick at 3B.

He does have a great clubhouse rep, and given Theo's repeated comments about getting an everyday player who can be a "leader" I'm sure it was a small factor in his thinking. But the main issue is what Fowler gives you between the lines. The other factor is what the Cubs do when Coghlan likely reverts to being a marginal player. Maybe Alcantara shows enough that he can slide into an everyday OF role, with either he or Fowler in LF. But if the Cubs are in the hunt, they've done nothing to delete their inventory of prospect trade chips to make a midseason acquisition for an impact bat in LF, where it's easiest (though not easy) to find one.

I like Valbuena probably more than any one else possibly can and I like the move. Sometimes it's good to not invent points of view to counter and rather just say what you think. If you think any part of that is invented, you're ignoring everything that's been posted on every Cub board for the last year. Cub fans overstate Valbuena's value. That doesn't mean he isn't a good player, but it's just the way it is. We got a switch-hitting CF with arguably the best late discipline in baseball without giving up anybody who figures to be a regular by mid-season or a prospect - that's a great move for Theo. No pain, no gain.

I know the fanatical Valbuena love around here means people are going to bitch about this trade, but it's a great move for the Cubs. Straily is strictly fill, and Valbuena is a guy we have redundancy for with Bryant inheriting 3B and Alcantara the supersub role. Fowler brings elite OP in CF and I don't think his defense is nearly as bad as some of the guesswork defensive "stats" make it out to be. If you wanted any chance to compete in 2015, this is a great move. You have to give up value to get value, and Cub fans dramatically overstate Valbuena's value. He's a good player, but Fowler is a potential game-changer for the Cubs this season . And sooner or later you have to stake your faith in guys like Bryant, Baez and Alcantara who have to be good for the Cubs to have any chance to compete anyway.

If the point is that the Bulls are much better with Hinrich playing not at all and Dunleavy a lot less than yes - I think the last three weeks have certainly borne that out. Now we'll see if Thibs is smart enough to stick with what's won them 10 of 11 when both those guys are healthy.

WAR is a weird concoction. How did Martin end up with a 2.8 oWAR after putting up a 689 OPS and 325 OP? Do 30 steals carry that much value? I'd certainly take Martin if Castillo is the main piece going back. His glove is elite, and he's not terrible offensively, with modest hope to improve with experience. But right now he's a high-K, low BB guy without much power and that's hardly an ideal combo.

Because one is 34 years old, on the decline both offensively and defensively and a rental and the other is 22 and has indisputably the finest bat speed in organized baseball?

That reminds me of the knee-jerk derision of anyone who dares to criticize a move the Cubs FO makes. Sip the kool-aid or get lost.

The Indians would have to pay someone to take Murphy's contract, even for a year. His offense has cratered and he's an absolute butcher in LF.

It's a great win. But considering it took Mirotic going 6-6 from three and another 30 point game from Butler, there are reasons to temper the euphoria. Hopefully Thibs takes the right lesson here - by using Niko in the 4th, he forced Memphis to bench Randolph. He's normally one of the slowest coaches in the league to make adjustments. The biggest issue is still the lack of wing depth, and Thibs insistence on playing every game as if it were Game 7 of the finals. Butler played 89 minutes in 2 days. He's the runaway league leader in minutes . Take a look at Butler's numbers in the last month and playoffs last season and then claim there's no reason to be concerned.

Let's talk about efficiency: Mirotic had 27 points on 10 shots. How in the world do you not find this guy 20-plus minutes a night even when everyone is back?

Mirotic is a beast. Big 4s simply cannot guard him. Yeah, depending on Rose being healthy and playing big minutes - solid logic there. Besides, even if Rose gets up to 35 a night Thibs will just give Hinrich more of Dunleavy's minutes.

Absolutely zero chance they keep three catchers. It'll be interesting to see who catches on Opening Day. That will be an early indicator as to whether Ross is going to lean more towards the platoon or caddy side of the equation - assuming we don't face a lefty that night (and I see no reason we would).

Nice to see we don't have massive overreaction to what was a completely predictable move to begin with. Ross is decent against LHP and still good defensively. Lester loves him. And the main point is that Castillo was as good as gone the day of the Montero trade. Someone was going to be the backup C and platoon partner, and you could do a lot worse. It's really all about what Castillo brings back, and we don't know that yet.

I prefer Smith for sure - I'd push hard for him. But despite his awful season, Venable might not be a bad buy low option. Can play all three positions decently or better, historically pretty good away from Petco and against RHP.
