  1. MLB Network Radio ‏@MLBNetworkRadio 6m6 minutes ago .@Jim_Duquette on Lester "it sounds like to me the Red Sox are out and they're trying to start the spin process"
  2. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 5m5 minutes ago No real evidence yanks are in on lester. If they go for big starter, they prefer scherzer.
  3. That's a terrific deal for Hammel. Have to believe he could have gotten more if he'd waited, but he had a great rapport with Bosio and the organization and clearly wanted to be back. Also - this myth that Hammel was "batting practice" for Oakland really needs to stop. He basically had one bad month. Over his last 8 starts Hammel had an ERA under 3 with a 1.0 WHIP.
  4. I'm not sure there's going to be any difference in cost, but at the same dollars I'd prefer Hammel.
  5. I agree. He's going to SF. The Red Sox flew to see Lester last week and everyone dismisses it but the Giants meet with Lester's agent while they are both at the Winter Meetings and he's definitely going to SF? The Cubs and Dodgers could have met with him too yesterday, but went unreported. The meetings have squat to do with it. I just think SF has the most to offer, period. If the contracts are comparable, I think he goes to the Giants. If the Dodgers (who I'm still not absolutely convinced are all-in here) or Red Sox give him a 7th guaranteed year and the Giants (iffy) or Cubs (no chance) don't, I think he ends up going to whichever team does. And if it came down to the Dodgers and Red Sox with 7 years, I think he goes back to Boston even if it's a little less money. I said from the beginning with Martin that the key was the 5th year - if someone offered it, the Cubs were out. Same is true with the 7th year and Lester, I'm guessing. The difference is, even if no one offers a 7th year it's probably only about 30% at best Lester picks the Cubs, and Martin probably would have chosen them if the Jays hadn't kicked in the 5th year.

  7. Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 9m9 minutes ago The #SFGiants met late Monday night with Jon Lester"s representatives, hoping to strike a deal in the next couple of days.
  8. he needs to be a distant second. if the top guy is lester, this is fine. if it's not, this is a mess. There's plenty of room for "over" guys between Lester and Hammel. Scherzer, Shields, Liriano, a trade for somebody like Zimmerman. But I don't expect the Cubs to go after any of those guys, so I suspect if Theo loses on Lester you're going to hear a lot of the usual mantra chanting - not selling out the future, "15 months", etc - and Hammel will have been the big signing two off-seasons in a row.
  9. The over/under is certainly 3/30 - I'd be shocked if it isn't three years, and within a couple million in total. Obviously, context is the key. If Hammel is the best pitcher we sign this offseason, that will be a major disappointment. As the second signing he's fine - though there are guys with a little higher risk-reward element that I'd have preferred.
  10. I certainly have no inside information, but my gut is telling me the Giants are going to be tough to beat on this. They have a superb manager, 3 WS in six years, a great ballpark (and pitcher's haven) in one of the best cities in the world if you have money. They have a team full of high-character guys and Lester's BF in baseball, arguably. On a purely personal level, I would think SF would be tough to beat. The caveat there is the 7th year. If someone is willing to go there, especially if it's not a vested year, I think they win. And I just can't see the Giants (or Cubs, for that matter) doing that.
  11. Jayson Stark ‏@jaysonst 6m6 minutes ago Exec of team in Jon Lester hunt says he expects Lester talks will come into clearer focus by end of day Monday. Wouldn't elaborate. 0 replies 53 retweets 25 favorites Reply Retweet53 Favorite25
  12. Angels supposedly trying to deal CJ Wilson, maybe to make a run at Scherzer. If they want to do a straight salary dump I'd look at that - Wilson isn't a #1 but he's still a very good pitcher, and his peripherals and velocity have been consistent. Signed for 2 years for a little over 30M.
  13. Is Dunleavy dead?
  14. We have a long way to go. And GS is no mirage - this is real. Curry is off the charts, and they're deep and loaded.
  15. How many times is Hinrich going to kill is before Thibs wakes up?
  16. Gasol really is a hell of a player, even at 34. The Bulls need to feed him even more than they are - especially with Bogut out, I just don't see GS having an answer.
  17. You really see the gap between the Bulls and the best in the league (read: the West) in this game. GS is really good.
  18. What do you mean Tom Loxas was wrong about something??? Only on days ending in Y.
  19. Nick Friedell retweeted Nikola Mirotic ‏@nikolamirotic44 24m24 minutes ago Don't worry guys, my ankles are okay. Just need a little ice. Good play by Walker.
  20. Yup. That's obviously very bad news - if the Dodgers really want Lester hard to see how they don't land him.
  21. That substantially predates the WEEI report that they're going hard after Lester.
  22. I really would have preferred it be the Yankees over the Dodgers. With Friedman there Lester really has no red flags staring him in the face, and they can offer something like 7/175 without a second thought.
  23. TomLoxas ‏@TomLoxas 3m3 minutes ago Chicago, IL Agent says Angels are mystery team for Lester.
  24. He did look better tonight. More engaged, and at least a little willing to attack.
