  1. These Mulyaks writing Baez off are exactly like the yahoos who've concluded the new Star Wars movie sucks based on one 30-second trailer 13 months before it's released.
  2. ChicagoCubsOnline retweeted Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 4m4 minutes ago The Pinehills, MA Red Sox source said no truth to Cespedes/Reds deal or increased offer to Lester.
  3. Boy, Thibs' infatuation with Hinrich is really killing the Bulls. He's a complete trainwreck.
  4. I don't think you could get either Grandal or Susac straight up for Valbuena, but either would be a very logical move for the Cubs to make.
  5. Kap and Gordo's sources really need to get their leaks straight.
  6. People really need to stop saying "next year's FA class is..." as an excuse for the Cubs to kick the can. We have no idea what next year's FA class will be yet, and they're never as good as they look a year out. But whatever it is, it will likely feature contending with the Yankees and Dodgers for the best names in it.
  7. It's pretty humorous to see a manager making utility infielder money cited as proof the administration is committed to spend. I love Maddon and I'm glad we got him, but any manager contract is a drop in the ocean financially - $25 million over five years is meaningless as a sign of commitment. I'd like to think Maddon wouldn't have come aboard if he wasn't sure the Cubs were at least going to loosen the pursestrings enough to be a mid-market team, but it's foolish not to be skeptical of their intent to spend on salary until they actually do it. Finishing second on free agents and making waiver claims they know won't bear fruit are not proof of anything except an understanding of P.R..
  8. And then go into next year when Zimmermann, Price, and Cueto are all free agents. Except for all the guys who sign extensions or have elbow or shoulder problems and drop off the market. Which only happens with "sure" next year FA targets what, every season?
  9. I would be willing to go up to $150 for 6 years on Lester, and I don't think Boston would. But if someone (again, not Boston) offers 7, that's a pretty big poison pill.
  10. Look for the Giants to jump into the Lester derby hard with Sandoval gone. And maybe Headley too.
  11. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 1m1 minute ago Sandoval is going to boston too
  12. I have no idea whether this source is legit or not, but it hardly seems a stretch to think a Father in-law might know Lester's travel schedule. What's unusual about that?
  13. I won't believe this guy until LegitReporter confirms it.
  14. Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 22m22 minutes ago Evaluators report many players eligible for free agency next fall available in trade now: Porcello, Fister, Zimmermann, Latos, Leake, etc.
  15. Rosenthal says the Reds are close to dumping a bunch of guys, including Jay Bruce. If they're willing to trade in the division a deal for Bruce (maybe a buy low based on last season) and one of their starters would certainly be intriguing.
  16. Except during the summer when the kids are out of school, more day games would be worse. In the end it's probably a wash, and probably isn't a big factor anyway.
  17. He still has to be at the ballpark though, and he has kids. Part of the equation may be which schedule allows him to see his kids more often (which is debatable). Or Schilling could simply be blowing smoke out of his ass as usual.
  18. Unless you're completely sold that 2014 was the new normal, in no way do Morse and Coghlan have "similar hit tools".
  19. dWAR is an utterly fantastical "statistic" to begin with, but Coghlan was even worse last year, and on average over his career. Who's more likely to put up a decent offensive season in 2015 bases on their history - Morse or Coghlan? I'd love to see the Cubs go out and get an elite LF either by trade or FA, but that's almost certainly not going to happen in 2015. Someone has to play there, and it isn't going to be Bryant. If Morse can be had on a reasonable deal, he's a better option than any in-house alternative or the likes of Gomes. FWIW, he also has an excellent reputation in that "veteran presence" category that Theo keeps talking up.
  20. In the absence of another major signing or trade, I think Morse hits enough to play every day in LF - I'd certainly put him out there ahead of Coghlan or the like. His careers splits are basically non-existent - he's fine against RHP. As for Bryant, I don't think there's any chance he plays significant OF next season. He may eventually, but the Cubs are going to give him at least next year to prove he can play 3B.
  21. WTF does that mean Day games, I assume Yes, day games.
  22. FWIW, Curt Schilling (he's a douche, but he did play with Lester) just tweeted that he thinks Lester ends up with the Cubs "unless he dislikes the schedule (absolute possibility)".
  23. My over/under was about $150 over 6 years, so anything at that level or less doesn't seem outlandish to me. If it's a question of the average annual salary and Lester does sign for the highest offer (as Theo has promised us is 99% likely) there really isn't any good reason for the Cubs to lose him. Is an extra $6 or even $12 million over six years going to dramatically tie Theo's hands? Of course not. It's a question of whether he's ready to get out of the kiddie pool or not. The flipside, of course, is what happens if it goes to 7 years. That would be a very hard pill to swallow. I doubt the Red Sox go there, but someone might. And if Lester is going to be swayed to go someplace besides Boston if that really is his first choice, I would think that extra year would be a lot more enticing to him than a small difference in average salary.
  24. If that is indeed Boston's first offer Theo is getting a chance to put his 99% theory to the test. This is a real seriousness check for the Cubs.
