  1. Actually, yes. I am apparently the only Cubs fan that was excited when we signed him.
  2. I heard on 670 AM today that the Cubs are actively pursing Stephen Drew. I haven't payed any attention to him in years. Thoughts?
  3. I'm not incredibly thrilled about this but I'm kind of just blindly trusting our front office at this point. I like virtually everything else they've done. Let's hope he returns to his 2010-2012 form. That would be pretty badass. I think at this point we just aren't super concerned about a few million bucks.
  4. That extra year was really enough for Martin to prefer to play for the Blue Jays? Whatever. We just saved a bunch of cash that we can spend elsewhere. Plus... Schwarber.
  5. I like Martin, but I don't understand why he is worth that much money. Besides last year, it has been awhile since his offensive numbers were anything special. If we pay him $16 million a year and he hits .220 with 10 homers or something, I'm not gonna be very happy with that use of $16 million. He better frame the [expletive] out of some pitches.
  6. At first, I read the title as "re-signs". Weird.
  7. http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/11308398/chicago-cubs-call-javier-baez I couldn't find a thread. Did I miss it?
  8. I always sat in the bleachers as a kid, and I turned out... eh, nevermind.
  9. I had a feeling there wasn't anything to this besides Mets fans dreaming.
  10. My dad is a Mets fan and he's telling me that there is a bunch of talk on the Mets board about the Cubs and Mets working on a deal. I guess the Mets have some pitching prospects but no hitters, and obviously we are in the opposite situation. I guess there are rumors about us sending one of our shortstops (I'm guessing Russell?) to the Mets for Jon Niese. I have no idea who the sources are on this. Anyone heard anything?
  11. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11177585/chicago-cubs-trade-jeff-samardzija-jason-hammel-oakland-athletics Who are these guys?
  12. I still think it's silly to preclude anyone from the HOF based on steroid allegations. All you're doing is rewarding the people who got away with it. As others have stated, players have been using all sorts of substances to increase performance as long as baseball has existed. But of course, that's why I don't get a HOF vote. On another note... imagine being a pitcher. You've got guys cranking homers off of you that you know damn well are juicing. That could get a little bit frustrating. I can see how some players might feel the need to level the playing field.
  13. When I first saw this reported, I instantly pictured the hunting scene from The Campaign.
  14. .095? So then... in other words... he wasn't even drunk.
  15. Chill, bro. They've got this. For the first time in quite awhile, we're putting together a solid minor league system and we have money coming off of the payroll. I pretty much like everything that Ricketts/Theo have done.
  16. So... just to clarify all of this... All of the names of the teams are staying the same, but the roster of Peoria is going to Kane County, and the roster of one of the Cardinals teams is going to Peoria. Correct?
  17. I can't believe this thread exists. If anyone went into this season expecting anything other than a supremely shitty season, then the joke is on you. I will gladly sit through another 2-3 years of sucking before I even start to get concerned about how many games we win. I mean, I've been watching shitty Cubs teams for decades now. The least I can do is let Theo and Ricketts take their shot. I do trust them. To be honest, if Theo and Ricketts don't succeed in turning the franchise around... I think I will give up hope that it will ever happen. And I mean... ever.
  18. You're all like "who said this" and "who said that?" when the answer is clearly nobody, because I never said that anyone did. They are statements that I personally made that did not refer to anyone else. I think that Castro is overrated by "Cubs fans in general" because he has been over-hyped from day 1 as being a future superstar, and I'm just not quite on the bandwagon yet. Folks on this forum are more realistic than "Cubs fans in general", though, so again, I'm not referring to specific posters on this forum. We've seen what he can already do offensively; now we're seeing what he can do with improved defense. He's only 22, so he manages to put those things together and continue developing as a player and you're talking about an incredibly valuable asset: a SS who can pull off a 5-6 WAR for years. Yeah I have no idea what WAR is, so you got me there. I'm not not all baseball-y like that.

Serious (but off-topic) question: Just out of curiosity, how many other forums are there like this (outside of other sports teams) that are made up of a bunch of really smart, sarcastic, white-collar folks that just take turns battling each other with witty zingers all day? It's like a really fast-paced, never-ending pissing contest. You can leave and come back several days later, and jump right back into the same pissing contest  This place is so different from all the other forums I'm on. I'm not saying it's a bad thing at all... I actually quite like it. It's just different, like I said.
  20. Dude are you seriously going to break down every letter that I type? Or maybe even every pixel of every letter? I never said that anyone said any of that [expletive]. Quit putting words in my mouth.
  21. Those were Derek Jeter #s in a totally different run environment. And your concern with Castro is that he doesn't improve upon his aggregate #s from ages 20-22? I don't really have any concerns with Castro. All I'm saying is that he's overrated by Cubs fans. We need to find WAY better hitters than Castro if we want to win anything this decade.
  22. If Castro puts up a career like Jeter for less money, I'll be happy with that. He didn't seem to hurt the Yankees much.
  23. This word, I do not think it means what you think it means. Probably not. I meant that we could do without him if it made business sense.
  24. Are you kidding me? When Albert Pujols first got to the big leagues and put up a couple great seasons, the Cardinals decided to build around him. That means, they say to themself, "okay, this guy is a [expletive] stud and he's really young too, so we should keep him right in the middle of our offense for a long time to come and pay him lots of money". You build the rest of your team KNOWING that at least one position on the field and spot in your lineup is taken. Is this too complicated or am I too high? Or both? I suppose the issue here is just that my perception of the term "franchise player" is skewed. I'm using the term more a if it were synonymous with "superstar" or something. In hindsight, I suppose the fact that he's a shortstop makes him much more easy to tag as a "franchise player". I'm aware that a SS who OPS's .800-.850, plays D and steals bases is a hell of a player. Those are Derek Jeter numbers. What I'm saying is that if he only OPS's .750 or something, and his D is average, then he's fairly expendable. Not necessarily the face of our team for the next decade. I actually like Castro quite a bit. So... so much for that.
