  1. ....wow there is not a lot of intriguing things down on the Pirate's farm. Obviously Allie and Taillon wont be part of any Pena deal and I don't see a whole lot of intrigue other than those guys. Starling Marte looks pretty good, but another CFer is the last position the farm needs. Maybe Colton Cain or Tony Sanchez? I'm not particularly thrilled by any of them.
  2. Are you expecting the '12 Cubs to give 1/3 of their starts to Casey Coleman, Doug Davis, James Russell, Rodrigo Lopez, and Ramon Ortiz? Because the '11 Cubs have played at a ~82 win pace when these losers aren't starting. I'm aware of that. But we can't assume health. I feel like it's a pretty safe bet that 4/5 of our starters wont hit the DL before the all star break again next year.
  3. More like 2 years of Cesar Cedeno's career. If he did that for 8 years, it would be hard to call it a disappointment. cedeno was top 7 in WAR among NL players for 5 consecutive years, to suggest that he was a bust or an average player would be a mistake. if he hadn't suffered so many injuries - playing half of one's games on the rock-hard Astrodome surface can't be good for a guy who runs a lot - he probably would've been as great long-term as everyone expected him to be. one can also hope that mike trout doesn't accidentally shoot his girlfriend in the head. Yeah, I was talking more about the statistical milestones that I (stupidly) deleted from the string of quotes. Cesar Cedeno hit over .300 three times, hit 20 home runs three times, and had a slugging percentage over .500 twice. Obviously a different era, but the expectations for trout, assuming he stays injury-free, are higher than that. Of course, Andruw Jones looked like he was destined to be the best player on earth, too. He's got over 400 home runs and a mantle of gold gloves, etc, but i'd say he was a disappointment. If a player being a possible HoFer is disappointing then projections were unrealistic and frankly absurd.
  4. You're probably right, but that's not the reality of the world. The superior talent is always going to be given priority based solely on their greater likelihood to succeed.
  5. Well, I have faced 90 mph fastballs but I don't see how my experience there has any bearing on this conversation. I mean, considering Aaron Boone's "expert" analysis in today's Futures Game (amongst a whole host of horrible MLB color commentators), playing experience sure isn't any sort of requisite for meaningful analysis. It isn't a leap of faith to assume a guy drafted in the 36th round at the position of "utility" from Martin Methodist is going to be an organizational guy. ETA: I assume hot box is just batter's box and not pro baseball. I clearly didn't play pro baseball. Joe Morgan...'nuff said.
  6. I'm not sure if this is how Aramis feels, but to me this invitation was meaningless. Being picked as the 5th different 3B in the NL is absolutely insulting. I wouldn't have wasted a second on it either.
  7. Well now they say Aramis has declined it. Interesting... Supposedly he didn't think he was gonna make it and planned a family vacation. Hence the reason for him declining. So do you think the first article bashing Aramis for this will come out tonight or will they wait until Monday? I'm sure it will include something about him not caring about baseball and being too lazy to go to the game itself.
  8. I'm all for going out and getting Prince in 2012 then just waiting for that ridiculous 2013 FA class. I think 2013 is the year to make a major push.
  9. If you want to compare the two, Wieters showed an elite bat and elite defense in the minors, but he didn't appear in the majors until 23. At age 19 Trout shows an elite bat, defense and speed. If Trout had a touch more power he'd have all 5 tools nearing elite status.
  10. It's not a slam dunk, but it's far to early to reach any kind of final judgement. Heyward has been plagued by injuries and it's getting to the point where you wonder if that's just going to be the type of player he is throughout his career. It would be much easier to evaluate things if we could get even two or three months straight of a healthy Heyward.
  11. If the pitchers afraid of getting hit don't throw at the batter.
  12. MLB had a chance to get right something that was wrong, but instead they decided to make it even worse. The ASG has zero meaning.
  13. He's technically a catcher, but there is no way he sticks.
  14. Gregg is a little bitch. Ortiz had every right to charge him. It's ridiculous to expect a player to just let a pitcher chuck 90MPH baseballs at him. A player watches a HR and a pitcher chucks a potentially career ending object at him; there's something very wrong with that.
  15. This had better be a bad joke.
  16. Maybe I'm wrong, but can't CC opt out after this year? You toss him into that previous mentioned squad and thing suddenly become very interesting. Still, 2013 seems much more likely.
  17. What sound reasoning. According to that Castro should have sucked since Patterson, Pie etc didn't pan out. Trout is legit. He and Harper are on an entirely different level.
  18. 2/2 so far for Aramis raising his OPS to .858. That ranks him 2nd amongst all ML 3B with at least 100 plate appearances.
  19. That's not so bad. There were people saying he deserved what he got for jumping in front of a kid to get the ball. Little did they know it was his kid and he was trying to catch the ball to give it to him.
  20. Aramis Ramirez? I think I'd prefer the lazy tag to the stupid headcase one.
  21. He's on pace for 27HR and 25 SB with a near .900 OPS. Plus he's only 23. He'll likely never steal 40 bags, but 35+ HR is hardly out of the question.
  22. like our SS? castro is not mike trout He's better. At the moment yes, but Trout's projections are considerably higher. Most are thinking that he'll hit something like .300+avg, .380+obp, 20-25 HR, 40+SB and excellent defense in CF during his prime. That would make him the elite of the elite.
  23. Time to see this kid in action. The potential is off the charts.
  24. Which if true might make him better than some of those "better options waiting in the minors". This is especially true when you consider the Cubs' record on developing position players. Right now, I imagine Ryan Flaherty could top Darwin Barney and his post-April .600 OPS. I'm hoping he's our opening day 2B next year.
  25. http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/news/story?id=6747510 That is about as horrible a thing as I can imagine. Hamilton thinks he's doing something nice and an overzealous dad ends up falling 20 feet and receiving injuries that ultimately kill him, all in front of his son. There's going to be a lot of people messed up by all of this.
