  1. I don't think it's a big deal. The rule, loosely, is that your debt can't exceed ten times earnings. But when you just took on a huge amount of debt to buy the team, you're probably going to be running up against that number. I think that's all this is. In another year or two - assuming the Ricketts can keep paying down the debt - I suspect the Cubs will be well within the rule.
  2. Not since we learned of no new structural damage to the shoulder, about a week ago. Back completely to square one of his rehab. No timetable. And, if and when he does come back this year, Hendry said a couple weeks ago that it would probably be as a reliever.
  3. I think the criticism is not that Ricketts asked for public funding for updates to Wrigley (as you say, it's a standard ask), it's that Ricketts screwed up the tenor and timing of the ask.
  4. Yeah. I think his attitude toward the Cubs wouldn't be quite so snippy if that were the case.
  5. Given that Cabrera was a semi-surprise early addition to the 40-man, is it possible that the reason his numbers don't look so good in the minors is because the Cubs are having him work on specific pitches? It can't be simply that they thought "this kid's got a live arm, let's put him on the 40-man," right? Unless I'm mis-remembering when he was put on the 40-man, I don't think it was to protect him from the Rule 5. That would also explain the aggressive promotion schedule, despite results that don't quite match. Just shooting from the hip.
  6. So when does Kirk start to get serious consideration for a promotion? Another month or two? I'm assuming he ends the year at Daytona.
  7. The bullpen turned it around, and the starters put together a hell of streak. The lineup was always decent. It's hard to see them holding together all season, but with the Rockies' starting pitching woes and the Giants' glue and tape lineup, I guess it's possible. Must be nice to go from a couple crappy years to a properly rebuilt team with a chance to win...
  8. Yeesh, that chart is terrifying. The production - until last night - had still been there, but it's hard to argue with that kind of consistent drop in velocity. His slider wasn't doing much last night, either.
  9. Crappy GM? Wow, get a clue. Awesome first post. Never question a poster named Captain Serious. It can only end badly for you. It would be entirely different if his name were Captain Mostly Kidding.
  10. This one made my eyes bleed from the first sentence. Thanks for the head's up; it has been corrected. Can't have typos in year old articles making folks' eyes bleed.
  11. Exactly. Sounds like the Cubs' pursuit was at least part of the reason the Red Sox decided to do the deal (presumably without the extension in place). Which sucks.
  12. Heyman says Gonzalez was looking for 8 years from the Sox: http://twitter.com/#!/SI_JonHeyman/status/11554592709939200
  13. This site also had a 3-way trade rumor where the Cubs would get Jacoby and Bucholz.. Not sure how much I would even believe this. I'm not going to try and convince you of my source - I'm skeptical, too, when I hear things like this. But, I have to defend myself a little: the 3-way Ellsbury and Buchholtz trade rumor was from ESPN Chicago. I merely passed on the rumor - again, from ESPN Chicago. And the substance of my post was saying the 3-way trade wasn't happening (http://www.bleachernation.com/2009/12/30/no-threeway-trade-between-cubs-red-sox-and-padres-for-now/) Fair enough. Just never seen the site, no disrespect. None taken. I just wanted to make sure to clarify before I was crucified.

  15. Color me slightly shocked that they're not gonna start him in AA. I know he held his own there last year, but that was a rather small sampling. Either way I'm pleased he's shown enough poise that the team has faith in him to start the season at the highest level he can get to in the minors That could have just been Lou saying Castro won't be in Chicago, and tossing out Iowa without actually knowing which minor league level Castro would start out at.
  16. Got that is all kinds of stupid, and written by the AP. Let us all spend the day counting with envy all of Doug Glanville's World Series rings. Actually, I think Glanville is more entertaining than Millar, and he might come cheaper. :good: Isn't Glanville all religious now? Did I read that somewhere or dream it? In which case, I dream really bizarre stuff.
  17. the problem is it probably won't stop when the regular season starts so, the reason for not practicing something in spring training is that your manager is deranged and can't stop doing something once he's started it? how much of a caricature do we need to create? what are you even talking about? the cubs (mostly because of lou) ran into wayyy too many outs on the basepaths last season. so when they start off the next spring training by telling players to be even MORE aggressive, it's pretty clear where lou's plans are headed. i don't think it's clear where lou's plans are headed after a few spring training games Maybe - but no sense in practicing a philosophy for a few games and then ditching it. It indicates where Lou's head is right now.
  18. Tough choice for the Cubs and Guzman with respect to surgery - rehab leads to a slightly higher likelihood of short-term viability, but perhaps more long-term problems. Surgery could lead to more long-term viability, but could also end his career. I can see why the Cubs are pushing for rehab. If Guzman gets the surgery, he's almost certainly going to be non-tendered at the end of the year - unless it's some kind of new miracle surgery that tells you whether the guy will be an effective pitcher the following year.
  19. This is my fear as well, though I must admit that Carlos has started out very well in his mission to make things easy. That was a bright spot in yesterday's suckfest. So rarely is it a positive when a guy sucks in Spring Training, but it would have been just our luck for Silva to dominate in Spring Training - just enough to make the rotation, and torpedo the Cubs in his April and May starts.
  20. I would not be opposed to being called the Orphans again.
  21. I think Byrd is inconsequential. This is the same team. Actually, it's worse.
  22. Has anyone seen much of him in center? From the little bit that I've seen, he never looked particularly impressive out there.
  23. The irony is that Byrd has hit righties and lefties basically the same for his career, and hit significantly better against righties last year.
  24. Playing Devil's Advocate, every year except last year. But I definitely think he will be competent depending on your definition of competent. I'm thinking somewhere between Marquis last year and Dempster last year. Ding. Obviously he won't replicate last year, but he's probably not going to fall flat on his face. And even if he does, maybe he can go back to the bullpen... :ninja:
