  1. If you're going to play that game, then you have to count every hit where he stole 2nd base as a double, and suddenly his slugging percentage doesn't look quite so bad. I already addressed this. It makes it 396 which still sucks. Man, that's pretty bad. Almost no one steals enough bases to make up for the lost value in the CS, but Theriot was a special kind of awful.
  2. Embarrassed to say I'm not familiar with Dewan's. How does it work?
  3. Isn't this kind of a selection bias thing? There's a reason the pitchers selected are considered the "good" RH pitchers... because they pitch well against most teams. I do think it's interesting to see which of the good pitchers we did better against, though. So it's appreciated.
  4. I wish. It's really just a simple matter of Soriano being a great hitter against crappy pitchers who make mistakes, and a terrible hitter against great pitchers who don't make mistakes. You see a lot of those in the playoffs.
  5. I thought the whole thing was stupid except for the part with the dude from Keenan and Kel screaming "fix it!"
  6. How long would you give him of .700 - .720 OPS before you'd send him back to the bench? I just can't see him putting up the kind of numbers he put up this year off the bench in a full-time role. There's a reason guys don't just become ML-calibre starters in their late 20s, and a reason why some guys have great success of the bench and not as starters. Starter = way more chance that the league figures you out.
  7. Also by "deal structure" he means DEAL STRUCTURE. That author is freakin idiot. Zell wanted the deal structure to be heavily based on leveraging debt to avoid taxes. With the credit crisis, that obviously has to change. I emailed him about that and he claims that he specifically asked Cuban if he was referring to the price. I'm just thinking that was a polite way of brushing off the question without having to provide a much more complicated answer, but what do I know. He may have said deal structure - and of course, the structure will have to change - but I think it is obvious at this point that the price is also going to come down. Deflation doesn't just affect the price of oil and cookies.
  8. A student of history. I like it.
  9. At 1:37 am. On a school night!
  10. SD offered Fukudome more money than we did. Then it was just meant to be, I guess. Shame on both of us.
  11. I think the point of the thread was regarding whether he should make the playoff roster over Ward, not replace Lee as the everyday starter at first. i think people are suggesting he start in RF if DeRosa isn't healthy There aren't exactly an abundance of great options for that spot if DeRosa doesn't play. so we're completely writing off Kosuke now? Exactly. Of course I'd much rather we start DeRosa, but if he's not available, it's not like the move to Fukudome is a HUGE net loss considering defense.
  12. Gotta agree. If Pie can put up a .750-.770 OPS next year with great defense, I'd be happy.
  13. Putting your team in a position where the best pitcher could possibly never play would be a crime. Rich Harden has to be in the front three, end of story. Even Sullivan doesn't disagree - he's just garbling out bs to get discussions like this going.
  14. ?? If the Brewers win the WC, game 4'll be on at 9:30 central. That's 7:30 pacific. I seem to have forgotten that it would be Cubs Dodgers if the Brewers won the WC  . The point stands - 930pm local time to start a game? Wouldn't that be 7:30 local time?
  15. I don't care what Lou does if they win it all. I don't care what anyone does. I probably won't for at least a few years. It'll take me at least 2, 2.5 years to sober up. I seriously cannot imagine truly being too frustrated with anything Cubs for about 2-3 years after they win. The same holds true for any of my teams really, but the Cubs especially for obvious reasons. I wouldn't be frustrated with anything for a few years about ANY of my teams if the Cubs win it all...
  16. That is a relative relief. With the way he changes speeds, velocity is obviously important - though it seems like he can get by sitting in the low 90s.
  17. Lol nice, thanks for the link. Funny guy, he is.
  18. Like Yellow Ledbetter?
  19. Geovany Soto is good at baseball.
  20. Happens pretty regularly, doesn't it?
  21. And that's ultimately where we're at. Hard to imagine anyone that's eligible to replace him actually replacing him. If he keeps sucking, he'll just be held back from remotely important situations. Which is terrifying, because then there's the ever-looming spectre of Bobby Howry...
  22. I know it's a tough question to answer, but I wonder why he slipped to where he did in the draft. He wasn't an over-slot type that wasn't expected to sign, right?
  23. Perhaps because it gives better hitters more PA and in doing so, increases our chances at scoring more runs, which increases our chances of winning. That's the goal, right? The increase in all of that, especially with like 15 games left, is so miniscule, that it's not even worth talking about and even less worth the possibility that it freaks the players out, because a move like that, after 145ish games and in the midst of a bad stretch, reeks of panic. I'd do it for the playoffs as well, not just the last 16 games. The point of doing it *IS* for the playoffs, not the regular season. But you've got to do it in the regular season so guys can adjust BEFORE the playoffs.
  24. QFT. I hate when I'm talking baseball with people, usually non Cubs fans, and when I make a good point about the Cubs, they say "Yeah...but they're cursed..." I think all curses are BS, plain and simple. Tell that to them zombie pirates.
  25. That's what I was thinking. I get that they have to put these things together in advance of the actual playoffs... but at least take a stab at what teams will really make it.
